  • In this episode we examine the Lo Pass Gate - an odd, hybrid kind of module that combines a VCA with an LPF for some unique effects.

    The Buchla Easel is one of the more unique synthesisers you'll come across. It has a sound all of its own... and an interface to match!
    In this video series I'll break the Easel down into its component parts, and describe the role each of these parts play in creating the wonderful palette of sounds at this instrument's disposal.
    About me:
    My name is Anthony Chisnall. I'm a musician & songwriter.
    My channel is these things:
    1. A place to share my songs - via various 'Back on Track' video series - in which you'll see each song idea evolve step-by-step, with me (hopefully!) improving my song-writing skills as we go.
    2. An outlet for me to discuss all things musical - including technical break-downs of software and tools that I use, as well as more wide-ranging discussions of topics that interest me.
    I play the guitar (electric, acoustic, and bass), and record all of my own synth-based sounds myself too, but I can't sing very well (huge understatement!), and so my wife, Pauline, who has a lovely singing voice, has come to my rescue. You'll hear her on all of my songs.
    All of my music is written in Steinberg's Cubase.
    I try very hard to make my videos PRACTICAL and no-nonsense - if I don't use a feature, I'm not going to waste your time trying to sound like an expert on it! This is the stuff I use day-to-day, so I think that's also what you'd like to hear me talking about.

    A lot to learn about these old synthesizers, but your videos make it a lot easier to figure it all out. I am impressed with the depth and detail you bring with your explanations. Surely, you must have been an engineer or have some other technical background? Enlighten us a little, please. And thank you for your videos.

      Thanks for your kind words! No technical background at all - just a lifetime of nerdy obsession :) I wrote my first piece of music in - I think - 1988, using Pro-24 on the Atari 520. I've always dabbled, but this channel has been the catalyst for me to take it more "seriously" (I don't think of something I love this much as "serious"!)

    Very informative ! I'm puzzled too with the ways the LPG modes are working and why it is so. Thank you.

    Thanks a lot for the thorough explanations, I have a question (maybe the answer will appear in your future tutorials) - what is the point to have the same output of the complex osc with the inverted phase via the gate 2 , besides the combination with the gate 1 signal which creates kind of HPF effect I don't see any practical usage of it

    • @OneManAndHisSongs
      @OneManAndHisSongs  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks!
      Basically, that's it - a different tonal colour. Because both gates have individual modulation capacities and output levels, you can mix the two signals in a lot of interesting ways. Phase cancellation is quite a common audio effect all on its own. For example, Brian May gets his distinctive sound (in part) from his out-of-phase guitar pickups :)

      @@OneManAndHisSongs Thanks a lot, all clear now :) Actually I have one more question, maybe I missed it in your previous videos, but when it comes to the sliders - level 1 and 2 which provide pure signals , what is their exact purpose?

    • @OneManAndHisSongs
      @OneManAndHisSongs  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It just gives you ability to have a constant, base signal. Imagine, for instance, you wanted a constant pulse to your piece that never dipped below a certain level - you'd set the floor using that slider.

      @@OneManAndHisSongs Is there any difference if I would use modulated output for the constant signal just without any modulation applied?

    • @OneManAndHisSongs
      @OneManAndHisSongs  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I'm sure you could emulate the effect that way. I think the important takeaway is that modular and semi-modular synths are all about options. It's better to be able to do something that in certain circumstances is redundant because another module can replicate the effect than not be able to do it at all. In the UK the phrase would be "horses for courses" - you use the best tool for the job at hand. It just so happens that the Easel's toolbox is very large :)
