As the one man loses the portrait of his wife, the other man's religious cross disappears. In the end both become empty shells of what they used to be. Hell bent upon destroying one another. This is the true nature of how war dehumanizes us.
I appreciate the lengths to which the developers went to demonstrate how evenly matched the two pilots were. Really brought it in with the landing gear and the subsequent dodge, even if it isn't realistic. Their stalemate serves to symbolize the draining effect of inescapable conflict, pushing men to commit the unthinkable because, at the end, they have "nothing left to lose." Another motif is then presented- war deprives people of a value which serves them purpose or guidance, in the case of the British pilot his love, and in that of the German pilot, his faith. But the ending was the best part, as the bodiless tracks in the snow move toward one another, it demonstrates the dead pilots' wills to kill one another, and thus the eternal will of humans to conflict due to the inability to control the demons which slumber deep inside of us.
I keep coming back for the ending sequence. This animation is proof that films can be and are some of the most powerful mediums of conveying a message.
There was a story of a German pilot named Franz Stigler who saw a crippled U.S. B-17 riddled with holes and fires. When he was about to shoot it down, he saw the crew in a dire situation and through one of the larger holes of the plane saw wounded crewmen. Instead of shooting down the bomber, he begged the pilots to land in Germany and be accepted as POWs, but as they refused to land in enemy territory, he ultimately decided to escort them safely to England before returning where he got the greatest dressing-down of his life. During World War I, the author of Storm of Steel Ernst Jünger (who was one of the greatest advocates for promoting armed conflict) recalled when storming through and enemy trench and was about to kill a British private, the terrified soldier pulled out a photo of his family and held it in front of Ernst’s face, to which he spared the soldier’s life and left him to be. Adolf Hitler survived World War I because a British soldier refused to shoot an unarmed German combatant. There are many instances in which humanity will not cave to primal temptation, these are only a few out of many.

As a history teacher, I've toyed with the idea of challenging my students to infer the approximate date this "battle" took place... within three months.
this reminds me heavily of a warthunder 1v1 duel i had back in 2017, I was in the bf-109 and the match had no time limit. We both had the maximum fuel load which is like 1 hour and something, both were similar in fuel copacity back then. We both had white smoke trails on, it was a *huge* moth ball. The dog fight went on for a minute, a minute turned into 5, then into 10 and so on. We both conserved our ammo because our approaches didnt guarantee a hit or just becasue one of us were out menouvering the other and then vice versa. The battle somehow lasted for 30 minutes, and the only parts that were really damaged were the wing tips, one gone and the other barely intact, the engine which was well holding up kinda, the vertical stabilisers which were damaged and then there were the flaps, one destroyed and the other damaged. The wings were holding out okay but they could be better and finally the pilot, the pilot was red and for all of you that dont know what it means well.. he boutta die if he takes another hit. So there we are, 45 minutes in to the fight with basically equal damage done to one another and nothing changed except with the occasional sound of being peppered for a half second with mg's from each other. skip 18 minutes and we only have about 2-3 minutes of fuel left and our ammunition is basicaly 1 burst away from being fully depleted, we both pull up to around 5000 meters only keeping 345 km/h in speed, we circle back round and there we were, a final head on. Our fuel was bascially seconds from running out, 5..,4..,3..,2..,1.. *NO FUEL* The sound of our mg's quickly filled the atmosphere with its violent bangs, aswell as the sound of bullets hiting our engines and wings. The engines set on fire and... *BANG* we crash into eachother, swiftly ending the match as a draw
I don't think many realized the true message of the short, human hatred has no bounds when we have to look back and think if it was really nessacary. Human nature is harsh and it's a tough realization. Those two men embody that 100%
@Daniel Paul Huh, you're right you didn't say anything about that. I guess since you were responding to someone claiming human nature is harsh and brutal I just assumed you were claiming the other extreme.
+johann sebastian bach thanks respect to you and your people my granddad was polish he fought in the war for us brits and was captured by the Russians and sent to die in Siberia
Of course, jumping out of your plane just before crashing it head on into your enemys' and then engaging in a pistol fight with them in mid air is totally realistic... ;)
The engines rev up quite a lot, meaning their sound goes up in pitch, but there's no wailing sound. The Stuka had actual sirens mounted in their landing gear, so that's a completely different sound, not just the dive rev-up made louder. There are a few planes (Mustang and Corsair are the two I know of) that have a faint whistle going on because of their aerodynamic properties, but it is an entirely different concept.
Even though some of the chi was overwhelming and at times too much I still see the metaphor in their zombification. Once he loses his picture and the other his cross it leaves them both to their basic instincts: kill each other. And at the end when they disintegrate even in death their souls carry on as rivals untill they defeat one another.
Nice I like that. I took it to mean something very similar, I felt that the timing of their death isn't relevant. Having their flesh slowly unravel was meant to take the focus off of when or if they died. This peels back every layer of both pilot's psyche down to their raw wills for the audience to see, but without the details of their ideals. The general perspective of the audience or "vantage point" is constantly shifting and there is no or little emphasis on who is the bad or good guy in the film. The most spectacular vantage points are occasional and from nature, only to be noticed briefly(bravo) before being interrupted by man-made effects. I don't know how better to say that last sentence but it's important because it does lead to instincts. I think when you say: instinct to kill; you're being a little bit too specific. Killing is simply a single mean of manifesting rage. War typically involves driving forces from areas you'd die for along with other in an organized manner. Just because a fresh battle or war hasn't tolled it's first casualty, doesn't mean it's not a part of a conflict. I could be wrong to say this, but I believe the instinct you are misidentifying is rage. Rage easily forces it's way upon the sufferer, past the strongest of tenets of love and/or religion past , past fear, past pain past reason until it finally manifests physically in ways that are both destructive and self-destructive, intentionally or not. And when the manifestations are exhausted, so is the sufferer. This is seen in the ammunition more than once, the fuel etc. This leads to the true beauty of the piece: The peace that follows the exhaustion is artificial. It never lasts. Your brain may not process all the rage and you may even drop and pass out but the rage stays with you in the short and long term, it can ruin your life and others and it is extremely contagious to put it simply. The pilots continue to fight not because they are physically trained to do so, but because they are both completely full with morale. The pilots are unable to accept peace because of their ideals. In the real world, you rarely get the luxury of *not* placing your ethics upon the ideals of warring neighbors. Thanks for your comment on this amazing video
There's a split between the pilots both leaving, and the hate of war continuing to fight. I feel like the red symbolizes their will to fight continuing on until nothing but a shadow of their fighting will remaining. Both pilots leave behind the ever raging, ever hungry, ever hateful machine of war.
***** This is not a griffon spitfire, as shown by the engine cowling. Judging from the air intakes underneath the plane, this could be anything between a mk5 and a mk9, all of which could use the C wing (with four 20 mm canons), and which could see combat against early Me109 fighters.
I love the part where they pop their canopies, unlatch themselves, quickdraw the Webley & Walther then fall to earth like like an indistinguishable piece of debris from their collided aircraft. Two parachutes open. I was compelled to pinpoint which falling specs were the pilots before they deploy the chutes. It took me a few times. It's so freakin good.
Without doubt one of the greatest pieces of amination EVERY to hit the screen. Unmatched message and incredible end music. I hope they won awards for this work.

The scene he looks at the map is when he realises he's too far away from base and not enough fuel to go back. Hence, he decides to go for the kill anyway since he's gonna die. I mean both of them
there is a similar story where a german BF109 pilot and a spitfire pilot were going at each other and the spitfire was in critical condition. Rather than finishing the Spitfire, the BF109 escorted the spitfire to allied airspace (enemy territory) and saluted him off for being a worthy opponent. After WWII, The spitfire pilot spent years looking for the BF109 pilot and finally found him. They met up and became really good friends for the remainder of their lives. There’s a story and picture of them both, but I’m not sure about the names. It’s also possible that what I said isn’t entirely accurate, but point of the story still remains similar to your comment.
I'm reminded of a very different story about a German pilot who saw an Allied bomber fly overhead and took off in his fighter looking for vengeance for a lost squadron mate. But when he caught up to the bomber he saw it was in a very sorry state, full of bullet holes, some of her crew dead. Instead of shooting them down he escorted them to the border and let them go. Years later after the war, the two pilots found each other and became good friends. Their families frequently getting together on holidays. (in other words, the exact opposite of THIS story :P where all they had left was their hate) P.S. Possibly some embellishment in the version I heard, but that's the way I heard it.
+StarwasterPrime it's not about the planes. It could have been two tanks or two soldier on the front line. The pilots died when they ran out of ammo. The wife's picture falling away and the beads breaking suggest that their humanity was gone. Only pure hatred remained, they weren't fighting for a cause anymore, just out of hate.
just another typical arcade battle in warthunder, i kinda picture them as this spitfire friendly firing his teammate which is the 109 so it end up in this childish noobie chase that went on forever, funny cus this happened to me except he left the lobby and i wasnt able to kill him
@@cikablyat6943 Most animations and dramatizations of WW2 dogfights aren't in this style. It's beautiful yet gritty at the same time, making it a rather unique film.
this should show us that this is what happens when someone loses their heart of kindness and sadness to the point where they themselves from fighting the demons of others they themselves become their own demons and lose their humanity and care for nothing but destruction , hate , fury , blind rage and so on.....we must never forget our hearts of kindness and live on as humans that want to understand one another in hopes of achieving peace.
both those birds are running on pure 200 octane hate, I don't see one fuel tank on either bird that's not perforated .I don't remember who told me this, inside every man there's a good guy and a warrior. God help you when you run off the good guy and there's nothing left but the warrior.
You mean when there is nothing left but Hate. Good guy, sure. But the other side, the "Fuck it all, bring it on, burn it down, won't stop till I've taken your last breath." That's Hate. And the warrior is present on both sides.
+No Info That´s a young way to see it A game is a game, a tool for sharp our mind and being... no matter how lose or win , there´s equal possibilities to earn and lose both ways (win or lose). An epic depiction of hate and determination. the purest emotion to its core. I felt all kinds of emotions watching this, 10 minutes felt like a lifetime of pure adrenaline.
Best fkn short film I've had the pleasure to see!! Goes to show you the ignorance men will do for their countries, but not the ONE human Race we are all apart of!!
I think it was trying to show what we become when we fill ourselves with hate. These pilots had a much more personal tone than just my nation vs yours, it was two men fueled by hate wanting to kill each other for gratification and satisfaction.
But w/o fighting for a country would they have been in that situation in the first place...? Men of this world are supposed to help one another, but countries put them to kill each other for politics, land & falsified religious beliefs. Think about it...
The dog fight scene during the first few minutes was honestly the best. I could have done without all the trippy existential stuff at the end, but I respect the theme they were going for.
The obvious high level of talent displayed by the artists renders inexcusable the detail inaccuracy: the twin blade on the 109 and the twin cannon on the Spitfire.
So a half second clip of the wrong 109 prop is an "inexcusable" detail inaccuracy bad enough to make you comment about it but all the other unrealistic things in the video are ok with you? Get a crip of yourself....
Flying level and pulling off controlled rolls with a missing aileron, rounds just clipping away little bits of the planes, the ammo counters, among a lot of other shit, wouldn't be too hard to do a little more research on a subject you're going to animate
I'm so late to this short film. But it blew my mind. They knew they were dead men and were dead set on ending the stalemate between each other once and for all, even if the ultimate victory would be the last thing to achieve in their lives. Even though they were fighting to the bitter end, I believe some would take their loss and accept humanity instead. Because what is an enemy? It's someone who hasn't become a friend yet. Not the point of this video, I know. I'm just sharing my mindset on this.
Just an idea, cut the video short at 6:50 with both soldiers dying by flying into one another all the while saluting one another out of pure admiration as both soldiers acknowledge and accept the fact that neither can let the other go home
That would defeat the entire point of the video. The point is that they become demons through hate and blind rage and will let themselves die just to get the chance to kill the other for no logical reason.
It's almost like it's supposed to be a surrealistic metaphor representing the way hate can push normal men past the point of sane or rational actions. Almost like the realism of the dogfight was completely secondary and just a means by which to explain the darker nature of humanity.
Mr.NoobTubes I was going to say that there were no mountainous terrain in the battle of Britain and also that the bf109 should have made the escape dive NOT the spitfire (direct injection vs carburetor), but then I saw the zombie part and said.. ok :))
This must be a 6 month old murican comment. (Clearly doesn't understand the tragedy of war and the psychological impact it has on the mind of a human fighting for what they think is 'worth' it. PS: Its ART not a HISTORY channel.)
I like the way they "fall apart" almost as if it's saying that hate tears away at you until it leaves behind something completely unrecognisable and insanely different to what you were before.
Death comes for the wicked and the saint, the reason of taking another life is about perspective as to distance of time. The closer to the moment the more gravity of the cause, revenge or honor, money or food, the death becomes meaningless after a while. It only hurts the living not the dead.
TheBlackHood They also stopped caring about the people and things they cared most for. One destroyed his religious necklace, didn't seem to care, the other let his picture of his wife fly off in the wind.
which leads to the dark rage that we all hold and the philosophy behind this is hate is a poison that will pass on no one will be safe from it but in the end who wins no one

+Hal Roy still looked Epic
Realisticly, it wouldn't have worked, the drag from the wheels would have caused the plane to nosedive into the water, but it was very innovative!
nah it would have worked
this reminds me heavily of a warthunder 1v1 duel i had back in 2017, I was in the bf-109 and the match had no time limit.
*NO FUEL*
The sound of our mg's quickly filled the atmosphere with its violent bangs, aswell as the sound of bullets hiting our engines and wings. The engines set on fire and... *BANG* we crash into eachother, swiftly ending the match as a draw
cap
And then everyone clapped.

I don't think many realized the true message of the short, human hatred has no bounds when we have to look back and think if it was really nessacary. Human nature is harsh and it's a tough realization. Those two men embody that 100%
Only you realized that! You are the chosen!
Likewise, I don't think you realize how unrelatable and silly that message is.

Bruh I find this 7 years later and this is absolutely astounding...
It was so realistic, but then they just had to add the Stuka Siren at 2:40. This was a spitfire and Bf-109 going into a dive, not Stukas, lol
nerd... but you are right
Of course, jumping out of your plane just before crashing it head on into your enemys' and then engaging in a pistol fight with them in mid air is totally realistic... ;)
Actually prop planes DO do that, they just added stuff to the stukas to make it louder
It's really easy to forget just what it is you're fighting for
The King of the Penguins true dat. we are all so vain.
I think that might have been the message, you know?
The King of the Penguins I thought the point was that at the end of the day, all War was was hate?
The point is: It doesn't matter.

Unrealistic ending. After ramming each other, they should have called the enemy a noob and complained to Gaijin about OP enemy planes

***** This is not a griffon spitfire, as shown by the engine cowling. Judging from the air intakes underneath the plane, this could be anything between a mk5 and a mk9, all of which could use the C wing (with four 20 mm canons), and which could see combat against early Me109 fighters.
+Vincent Godenir It was a stalemate because neither plane was Soviet.
I love the part where they pop their canopies, unlatch themselves, quickdraw the Webley & Walther then fall to earth like like an indistinguishable piece of debris from their collided aircraft.

there is a similar story where a german BF109 pilot and a spitfire pilot were going at each other and the spitfire was in critical condition.

This is the worst video to comment this
well well
I'm reminded of a very different story about a German pilot who saw an Allied bomber fly overhead and took off in his fighter looking for vengeance for a lost squadron mate. But when he caught up to the bomber he saw it was in a very sorry state, full of bullet holes, some of her crew dead. Instead of shooting them down he escorted them to the border and let them go. Years later after the war, the two pilots found each other and became good friends. Their families frequently getting together on holidays. (in other words, the exact opposite of THIS story :P where all they had left was their hate)
P.S. Possibly some embellishment in the version I heard, but that's the way I heard it.
Charles and Stigler?
+StarwasterPrime it's not about the planes. It could have been two tanks or two soldier on the front line. The pilots died when they ran out of ammo. The wife's picture falling away and the beads breaking suggest that their humanity was gone. Only pure hatred remained, they weren't fighting for a cause anymore, just out of hate.
+StarwasterPrime Franz Stigler?

Best fkn short film I've had the pleasure to see!! Goes to show you the ignorance men will do for their countries, but not the ONE human Race we are all apart of!!
I think it was trying to show what we become when we fill ourselves with hate. These pilots had a much more personal tone than just my nation vs yours, it was two men fueled by hate wanting to kill each other for gratification and satisfaction.
But w/o fighting for a country would they have been in that situation in the first place...? Men of this world are supposed to help one another, but countries put them to kill each other for politics, land & falsified religious beliefs. Think about it...
there always war no matter what. when you you are fueled by the hate and blinded by lies you will go to any length to kill your enemy.
2021 / [Current year] and I still come back to look at this gem.
Get over it
and at 2:33 there he wrote "Maksimum" instead of "Maximum"
So a half second clip of the wrong 109 prop is an "inexcusable" detail inaccuracy bad enough to make you comment about it but all the other unrealistic things in the video are ok with you? Get a crip of yourself....
pretty sure thats just german bro
Flying level and pulling off controlled rolls with a missing aileron, rounds just clipping away little bits of the planes, the ammo counters, among a lot of other shit, wouldn't be too hard to do a little more research on a subject you're going to animate
It makes me think of a quote from (appropriately enough) Ace Combat: "You can't end bloodshed by shedding more blood"
unless your fighting mongols. it's either surrender or kill.
If you are hurt by someone, or you will be the one to hurt someone, the very same red blood will be shed - Echiro Oda, One Piece
Amen to that, man
First of all, There is no need for profanity. Second, I was merely saying that in the context of the video, the quote was appropriate.
Why is everybody so against this? It's true
Holy mother of cow this amazing. i love this so much because it shows that hatred will get you no where. this is truly amazing.
The thing I like most about this short is the shaders that were used. It has a Comic Book Aesthetic.
Just an idea, cut the video short at 6:50 with both soldiers dying by flying into one another all the while saluting one another out of pure admiration as both soldiers acknowledge and accept the fact that neither can let the other go home
Still freaking kick ass, double thumbs up
That would defeat the entire point of the video. The point is that they become demons through hate and blind rage and will let themselves die just to get the chance to kill the other for no logical reason.
ChuffedMuffin yah I get that , like I said , just an idea

It's almost like it's supposed to be a surrealistic metaphor representing the way hate can push normal men past the point of sane or rational actions. Almost like the realism of the dogfight was completely secondary and just a means by which to explain the darker nature of humanity.
Mr.NoobTubes I was going to say that there were no mountainous terrain in the battle of Britain and also that the bf109 should have made the escape dive NOT the spitfire (direct injection vs carburetor), but then I saw the zombie part and said.. ok :))
That would explain why their engines didn't overheat and they didn't run through their ammo sooner.
while i do like realism, thats a fantastic reply.
