    Another top, informative discussion, Robert. Professor McBride was the first film historian I gravitated towards when my enthusiasm for classical Hollywood began. I was hooked from his book on Ford which he co- wrote with his late colleague, Michael Wilmington. His critical studies of those golden age titans are a vital resource for younger film buffs. He has great anecdotes of working with many of those great people thanks to his & George Stevens Jr.'s stellar work with the A.F.I. Billy Wilder's unsentimental classics repay endless revisits...the gleeful smartness of the screenplays that he, Brackett, Diamond, Chandler etc. helped fashion into being are a masterclass for budding writer directors. The clarity of Billy's visuals', are startling to behold. One example? In 'The Lost Weekend', writer Birnam drinks himself unconscious. The screen goes black. When Don comes to...one closed eye fills the screen. Slowly, the eye twitches awake & looks confusedly around. Anyone who has woken up & not known where they are knows that anxiety. The sheer imagination of Wilder to zoom in on one eye is something most directors wouldn't even think of. Things like that are an improvement of Charles R. Jackson's source novel. Look forward to chats betwixt yourself the the good professor...

    A cynic is someone who hates people but pretends to like them. Wilder loved people but was not afraid to show their darker side.
