Around this time one year ago, I met a sweet little old lady on a Norwegian cruise in the Caribbean. She had over heard me and my friend talking about new music, and she asked if either of us liked folk rock or indie music. I told her that I did and she said that I should check out her granddaughter's band, Big Theif. I answered that I would give the band a listen, and I'm glad that I did. This band has a really awesome sound, and Adrianne Lenker has a really cool grandmother.
One of the most beautiful songs I've ever heard. The way I interpret it (or at least the chorus) is similar to theories about the meaning of life/ greater beings in the universe. This UFO is taking her to another place to "deepen our love," teaching her that what we know in this world is only a fraction of the love that exists in the universe. Does anyone else feel this lol.
Yes indeed, and he pays attention to getting a good sound from his drums. He plays a vintage Slingerland kit, which has a warmer sound than modern drums that are designed to cut through a loud rock band
I think the percussion really makes this song. The way it carries you through and out of the little gaps in the guitar soundtrack contributes so much to the feel of the song
@@Euthymia So glad to learn that. No doubt he is an awesome and attentive drummer, but there is something else to it... I guess that's what I have been trying to put my finger on.
The best kiss I ever had was the flickering of the water so clear and bright... I've never seen a more beautiful and accurate statement to reflect my love for nature than this. ❤️
They are all Berklee trained musicians. So I think at least part of the answer to your question is that they have all worked incredibly hard and have a deep understanding of music composition.
Ughh I love them so much... I LOVE every single song they make not even because I’m biased with my favourite artists but because Big Thief just makes such addicting songs. I don’t know how to explain it but their music feels like fresh water cleaning my ears.
Mitchel Bryan I know, they are the only artist where I could play every song over and over and not get sick of it. They’ve legit become all I listen to and I’m fine with that.
God damn this is gorgeous!!! Melody, lyrics, drum part, guitars... all add up to perfection!!! I am absolutely stunned. The world just became so much more worthwhile with this song in my head. Thanks for the inspiration y’all!!
I wasn't really a Big Thief fan although I enjoyed their last albums. Then they released this which is hands down a masterpiece, one that only comes along once in awhile. It's the kind of album that takes a band onto a whole new playing field. Consider me blown away. Also, its worth having it digitally and physically on vinyl. They are completely different listening experiences. Digitally, you are able to hear all the background noise and intricacies while on vinyl, it brings out a warmth that is fantastic.

Mmmmmmusic! How warm and comfortable I feel listening to this. Huge fan and am so happy I stumbled upon your music on Tiny Desk. you're grrrrrreeeaattt!
Everything about this song flows in such a beautiful and magical way. The whole album, really. It's lyrically and musically astounding and has such a raw, genuine, and emotional quality to it. It feels stripped down (in the best way possible), while also complex and masterfully crafted. Big Thief and Adrianne Lenker deserve every bit of praise they get.
I don't five a try at first because I was thinking this would be another punk band who takes IT to seriously. I just listen and is jawdroppin, is like those 90s songs who were tender and nice and quite familiar, but sounding Like something fresh, vital and inmediat. This make realize the importance of the place I am.
I just found you all today after serendipity put you on while I was watching clips of Stephen Colbert and I have already heard this song about 7 times. Kinda addicted. And funny this is the song I would like more than Not which is why I went looking for you in the first place. I have been visited also. And just like you I haven’t seen them in a while. Just read the lyrics and I was like oh of course lol My favorite line: “our love it isn’t even a fraction “ Amazing. Btw mine were the Andromedans. Maybe one day they will come rescue us.

Dang. On a compositional level this just makes all other modern folk or rock just seem lazy. The verses and chorus are BOTH fully non repeating phrases. That would mean very little if it all didn't hit the mark on every other level. There are so few songs that I want to listen to 10 times in a row. This record is fabulous.
Dan Adams good I’m not the only one that put it on repeat. There is a melody when she sings the last verse that just feels like heaven. Those notes together feel like a memory of something I cannot put my finger on.
I don't know how much i will be able to go on like this, because i'm pretty sure i might go insane. Seriously. I can't stop listening to it. I truly fell in love.
I'm a pretty jaded listener at this point, but this song pierced through the noise in a really special way. I've played it over and over and even learned the parts. It's so rare to find a song this technically intricate, that hits you right in the heart on first listen.

Just enjoy the crack you smoke talk a lil less baby
One of the most criminally underrated songs of our time!! ❤️
So underrated it hurts
Also appreciate how subtle the drummer of this band is, every hit is so thhoughtful in intensity and how much groove is there or is only being implied
Good comment, subtle hero of the album in my opinion.

I often find myself drumming subtle parts on Adrianne's solo music, it makes sense.

this is the best song I have heard so far in a looooong time! Wow, it's amazing. This is real music and these are real musicians.
How can someone write something this beautiful?
I agree! But this article about Adrianne Lenker gives us some clues: pitchfork.com/thepitch/1482-big-thiefs-adrianne-lenker-has-seen-some-shit/

I think it’s because Adrienne is so awake .. her depth love and energy comes through the sound and it’s what the world desperately needs
4AD...obviously the best record label in the world
DRoy, what leads you to believe Big Thief won't sell enough albums on 4AD? Is there something we should know?
Ask that to Grimes
Merge Records.
Not a competition, but this one, XL and Sub Pop would be constantly beating the shit out of each other
Saids who 4AD best record label in the world? If they are picking up crud like Big Thief then clearly not
Love this band!... Stuck with these albums all through 2022!!...
one of those songs that sound fun, positive and mysterious / surreal at the same time.
