Thank you so much! You are a great teacher and player, and you have an amazing tone! Thanks for taking the time and putting in the hard work to make these videos!
Consuming a good deal of your content lately Wally and this video is great as well. Very nice for someone with decent classical chops who wants to get better with jazz style and improvisation.
Another great video Wally. Thank you so much for putting this together. Loving the tension the dissonance a solitary not can make! Cheers & good to have you back posting content
Work is a grind but pays for lessons. Loving the journey & one of the best things I’ve ever attempted. Your guidance is invaluable & I just wonder how some of the greats used the melody to work out their chord changes & improv. This is a conversation I couldn’t have considered 3 yrs ago!
I am really grateful for your work.. it's really amazing. There are many TH-cam channel with unrelated information. This is my favorite TH-cam channel for learning sax.. thank you so much
8:12.. yeah Dr W. I get this stuff now... yes .. that F is most simply heard as b3 to D (out) no great need to hear F as also b9 the Emii (out).. ..its also .. b6 to the AV7 (out) .. Im not trying to teach.. just to show evidence that I can finally hear whats important to pay attention to ( and hence not be crunching harmony when one has enough information already) this is the best and clearest lesson Ive every (seen and HEARD ) or maybe Im finally just ready for it ? .. but wow.. what fantastic stuff !!! ... loud and clear !! ... 1 million thanks.. and then some !
June Blues !!!... man Im a nut....these 251 4 bars tripped me up as I never slowed them down enough (but Ive listened to them 100 times looping.. so yeah.. back to it (go practice)
Once again a nailed on guide in our saxophone journey. LOVE the B flat in D7 gives a real focus to the phrase with different options to resolve. Guess I had better ‘Go Practice’, grateful thanks as always
Hello from France, I’m not yet able to play all those great phrases, but I liked a lot that you selected great artists, aunt quoted the pieces and albums. Now, I’ve got a nudge playlist for my summer ^^ :-) Marie-Hélène
Wonderful, I hope you have a fantastic summer of practice! I spent a few days at the Vienne jazz festival, absolutely fell in love with France! Your notebook videos are really wonderful, by the way. I don't speak French, but I still enjoyed watching!
4:20.. finally hearing it... 1a2a3a4a 1a2a3a4a... sounding so tight at that pace ! ( I just recently saw this one.. and thinking... Im really going to start working on these now !) that sound is sooo inspiring ! ... thanx again ! (Dr Wally.. .. hey...could you get that happening on a tenor ?.. or.. is the back pressure ... well.. not dense enough ( is.. not as punchy ?...by design etc)
I think it’s important to note that the ii-V is used in jazz blues, but not always, and in popular music it’s much more common to use V-IV (and it’s not unusual for jazz players to substitute that).
Love the 56 but looking for something a little easier to play with smaller tip opening. I’m going to try this. How is it different from a Meyer? Would you say brighter or darker?
Tone is so beautiful, but I notice you have 2 mouthpieces in the video. When talking you have a different one then when playing. Could you share these mouthpieces your using?
Sure, I'm using the Windy City Woodwinds 56 and our new Prototype (being released in a few weeks). The prototype is being played on the Yanigisawa (underslung octave neck).
My friend your contents are just getting better and better! I get so much free lessons for my student through you. And you sound as silky as susual! but did you notice that the audio/video synchronization is somewhat off today?
Can you please tell me about 56 mouthpiece , I’m 65 and still blowing local gigs play jazz west coast to extreme some times need for edge At the moment I’m trying d’dadrio marble 5 not respond on low ends as Meyer I can blow ok on 5 medium What shall I select on 56 which is my favorite number of the whole world I have to get one How it stands up to Marble Jazz select?
This way of practicing is just what I need. Tempo down to 50 percent and listen. I can feel it. Thankyou! For the last couple of days I have been trying in this way to copy the sax in Billie Holidays "It had to be you". Waou - this is inspiring. Whenever she takes a breath, the sax comes in and makes it divine. There is a lot to be learned, I think. th-cam.com/video/jlYfaJYn5fU/w-d-xo.html
@@drwallysax It's your Yamaha bias! :P Also, I've heard that one must match a horn with its own mouthpiece... so another money pit for you to go down. hehe...
Thanks Dr W, this is like studying scriptures. Truth and beauty in each phrase. The gospel of jazz.

Hey Michael, that's my background as well. Happy practicing my friend!
Gracias Dr. Wally. Voy a practicar!
“Talking about music is like dancing about architecture” needs to be on a shirt.
Right?! I did not coin the phrase, but I love it.
Dr Wally, I've missed you. Good to see (and hear) you back.
WONDERFUL to be back :)

Art Pepper was incredible. Had a colourful life!
Really loving this series. So comprehensive and motivating. You have a fantastic, engaging teaching method. Love love love!
Well you just made my morning, thanks my friend!
II V patterns is very good 🎷thank you very much Wally 💕
Finally someone recognises Rouse for the master player he is. Super Cool Doctor! Respect!
Rouse is aaaaamazing! Such a unique voice on the saxophone.
Beautiful Doc. Charlie and Art forever.
Art Pepper, man. Soooo Beautiful and Charlie just swings like crazy!
Really enjoyed the video. Your teaching ways on theory is practical and refreshing. I will practice these exercises. Thanks again
Another really informative video lesson. Many thanks

Thanks Wally! Great examples from the masters! Nice lick exercises too!
Thanks Rob, happy Friday my friend!
Such a great series, you really answered where the problems I had in progressing by just working with the scales and alpegios. Great teaching
thanks Brian, very kind of you :)
You have the most incredible sound. Brilliant video!
Both!
Another Great Lesson from Dr Wally. Fabulous examples. Art Pepper & Charlie Rouse two of my favourite players too.
good taste, Alan! Pepper has been such a huge influence on my love of Jazz :)

How many saxophones Do You own Wally? :D That Yanagisawa sounded very nice :)
More than I should? The Yani is very nicely built, just a bit.....bland?
What backing track are you using for the exercises at the end of the video

In rock and the "blues" genre, absolutely. I teach classical and jazz where the ii/V is fairly ubiquitous when a "blues" is called.
Thanks Wally for another great video! Hey - I think there is a typo at 9:00 with F# and C# in the key signature but my ears hear C natural.
Huh, I'm not sure if I'm playing it wrong or notated wrong 😂
Kids are home for summer, I'm workin' fast and furious!
Hello Dr. Wally! I want to know if you have records and where I can find them
Love the 56 but looking for something a little easier to play with smaller tip opening. I’m going to try this. How is it different from a Meyer? Would you say brighter or darker?
64 is definitely brighter, not drastically, but noticeably.
NICE JOB. K

Hmmmmmmmmm - can I make that a podcast episode?

Sorry Dr Wally but what notes are you playing descending? Are you starting from the root or the 7th?
I want you to figure that out! The lack of notation is intentional. You can slow down the video in the video player settings.
I have feelings about your tone I shouldn’t be feeling 😊 sorry Doc Wally!
