When he passed, Gray willed his music and royalties in a trust to benefit a school for the blind and St. Jude hospital. For a timeless song like this, nice to know it's doing as much good on the back end as it does for its listeners.

Considering Mentor Williams (Mentor's brother is Paul Williams) wrote "Drift Away" the royalties from this song didn't belong to Dobie Gray.

@Spinspiel The artist receives royalties too. Not as much as the songwriter though. It was a very kind gesture to donate to charity no matter what the amount was

@Spinspiel It depends. The performance royalties belong to Mr. Gray and the writing royalties belong to the songwriter. They we must ask whether these rights have been permanently assigneed.

This was the closing song on the very first record I ever bought, a K-Tel compilation album I ordered through the mail in 1974. I was in 8th grade, just stepping out into my own taste in music, learning and discovering rock and roll as I transitioned into my teenage years. It makes me tear up now as I look back on all the years I've loved music. It also expresses what I feel about you guys and all you great reacters, who keep it alive for me in my fading years. I miss so many friends that are gone now, and watching all of you makes me feel like I still have friends to hang out and listen to music with. Thanks, guys, from the heart.

"The 'In' Crowd" is a fantastic song, and a great performance by Dobie (albeit of a very different flavor than "Drift Away"). Tons and tons of swagger in that one.
I'll bet that Andy and Alex would love it based just upon the fact that they like song titles with interesting punctuation, and "The 'In" Crowd" has interior quotes around the word in the middle.

You guys come up with some of the smartest comments and analyses. Many people, passive listeners mostly, don't allow themselves the experience of letting the music wash over them, letting emotion take over, then talk about those emotions, and what created them. Words, melody, engineering, instrumentation, vocal quality. You constantly surprise me, and that ain't just blowing smoke up your trouser leg, guys. It's the reason I stay with you. Much thanks.

I totally agree. What I love about A&A is they just close their eyes and *experience* the music.
There are other reactors that I watch, but these guys are S-tier. My biggest issue is when a reactor watches a video of the song, and spend the whole time talking about the weird clothes or funny haircuts people had “back then”, and just end with “that was a good song, I liked it!”

Story time. The year was probably 1999, I was 13 years old at the time. With my father, uncle, and two brothers, went out to a remote lake around Taos NM. Saw a man playing fetch with his Australian Shepard and started up conversation with him. Well, turned out to be Mentor Williams, brother of the more famous singer/songwriter Paul Williams. Mentor chatted with us about writing this song and about living in a home nearby overlooking the lake. Also noted that Michael Bolton helped him build his home. Not sure of their connection, but Bolton did cover the song years later. Will never forget that beautiful afternoon on the remote crystal clear lake chatting with him. Very nice guy. Also, great tune! Cheers

One of the all-time memory tracks for those like me who have loved it from the beginning. The sad part about growing up back then is not getting to hear these songs with headphones, but radio was good enough for us.

Thanks guys. This is one of those songs that it is a love song to music and those are the best songs. Rush spirit of the radio comes to mind, but there are so many songs about making music, listening to music, loving music. I find the ones about radio particularly interesting. We kind of have a love-hate relationship with radio I wish that kids now knew what radio was like when I was a kid when you called into stations so you could hear your favorite song songs that weren’t available yet because the album wasn’t out. Or sometimes just a song that didn’t get a lot of AirPlay.
Anyway, thanks for playing this and the artist as well. The musicians were incredible and his vocals are just so amazing. I’ve known this song since I was a very small child. I’ve always loved it and I always will rock on.

One of my favorite songs that never gets old. Gray has that Southern Soul voice that’s so emotional that you can feel what he’s singing. He reminds me of another artist, Clarence Carter, who has that same voice. “Patches” is the song you definitely need to hear next.

1,000% THIS!!!!! If you don't shed a tear listening to Clarence Carter's "Patches", well you aren't human!!! Then to stop the tear, you have to hear Carter's "Strokin'"

I was a senior in college, going to songwriter concerts! Loved that it had R&B sounds that reminded me of Steve Cropper guitar (Booker T & The MG's, and pre disco bass). My older brother made me a Ray Charles fanatic and for the 70's to have some laid back soulful vibes like this made me proud of our decade. Still living for records, songs instrumentaists. My Dad(born 1906) loved Jazz, my brother (1941) 50s and 60s, me born 1951, inhaled it all, thanks to my family and I'm still discovering new artists, tho I never became a songwriter as I dreamed at 22, I love afficcionados like you guys who pick out details like my Dad did and I still do. I learn musically and virtually get to hang out listening to music! ❤
