Alex has always looked a bit like a rebel but Andy seemed like such a nice clean-cut young man. Now he looks like someone who needs to keep 500 feet away from schools. So sad...
Don't listen to these fools in the comments questioning your judgement on reacting to this song. Granted, it's not for everyone but this song was a huge hit in the UK back in 82' and it was the bands second #1 single and it was the biggest selling song of 82 in the UK. It deserved a listen.
Yeah, #1 in Canada too. This song was big & it was EVERYWHERE, especially considering it was by group that was very much not in the mainstream. Similar to the infamous CHUMBAWUMBA.
Yes, this was a big hit in the US too, I remember it fondly. One of my best memories from college is going out drinking with my friends at school, and dancing to this song. Those were fun years.
@@josephbrowning4220 It indeed hit #1 in the US in April 83. Upon some research I was surprised to see this song prevented Michael Jackson from having back to back #1 singles with Billie Jean and Beat It as it landed right in between those to take that spot.
The band who did our wedding played this song at our reception many years ago and I'll never forget how beautiful my new wife Eileen looked as she twirled around on the dance floor holding her wedding gown up off the floor with one hand. Eileen's no longer with me, but she was an Irish beauty.
There are music snobs that will hate this song purely because it's pop, those people are not musicians because this is an amazing arrangement with many movements and dynamics but has a great popular hook and an irresistible singalong vibe. Not many are able to pull this off.
@@Uatu-the-Watcher Good point. Btw all the figures indicate that Rock and Country are on the way back in after 20 years of Hip-Hop ruling the industry. It's finally getting it's turn as dad's music.

"Too Ra Loo" comes from "Too Ra Loo Ra Loo Ra (Irish Lullaby)", a song that goes back to 1913 and yes, it was popular in bars and pubs! Bing Crosby and other singers made it big hits!
Stunned (happily) that you guys enjoyed this. This song really owns me, like psychically & almost physically transports me back to the first time I danced in public with my first crush to this song. ❤
Glad you enjoyed this. This song is usually played at the end of a wedding party disco when all the family are drunk on the dancefloor and just want one last song to sing along to with their shirts hanging out and wishing were young and carefree again lol
Soooooooo many self righteous people rag on this song looking for something deeper like in a driven bass line or a drum solo. It’s a neat little ditty that has a hook and fits quite nicely into the early 80s.
Johnny Ray was a popular American singer, songwriter, and pianist in the 1950's... hence the lyrics "Poor old Johnny Ray... Sounded sad upon the radio, moved a million hearts in mono. Our mothers cried..."
Main man Kevin Rowland was born in Wolverhampton, England but has Irish roots - "being born in a stable doesn't make you a horse". Be ready for every Brit to point out that they weren't one hit wonders over here as they had two number ones and seven singles in the top 20. Their three studio albums in the 80s are all excellent.
I like it more also. I do not hate the hair bands in totality. Of course, as all trends go by the end there were so many bands that were a fraction as good as some of the pioneers. Motley Crue, Bon Jovi, Van Halen (I will get hate for this one), are all so very talented. Not like some of the later ones.
Born in Birmingham, England (Ozzy's hometown) but Kevin Rowland (vocalist) was from Irish parents. So that gives you the "Celtic " influence. In UK and many parts of Europe, they were not a 1 hit wonder. They had several great songs...but obviously they could never top this. One song you should check out is "Jackie Wilson Said" a tribute to the great soul singer. Also "Geno" a tribute to Geno Washington, another soul legend.. My final, and probably my favourite, recommendation is Kevin Rowland solo song "Because of you" a beautiful ballad with Kevin's amazing vocal range

Even though I was a metal head/hair band fanatic in the 80's, this song is a perfect example of what made the 80's such a great decade for music. I mean, when else would a banjo, fiddle, and tin whistle come together on smash global #1 hit? Even us metal heads loved it.
I met these guys at a Denny's in Syracuse New York just before this song became a hit. I was a bus boy and they came in late one evening, tour bus parked outside. They were traveling south from Montreal. I went to school the next day, and no one recognized the name. Two weeks later, Come On Eileen launched up to the top of the MTV and billboard charts. I told other kids and they said, "They wouldn't eat at Denny's." I laughed at them saying, "Even stars on tour love pancakes."

So many happy childhood memories. Close my eyes and I can picture long passed aunts, uncles and grandparents going crazy to this in smoke filled bars and dusty village halls. ❤️
This was huge in the 80’s. An English band that had a ton of instrumentalists. Violin, Banjo, and so much more. I met them when they toured the states for the first time, just nice guys that were so excited to see the US.
S-Tier. Holds up well for the 80s. Got played a lot on the radio for a spell, probably because radio DJs liked making innuendo over the title. Especially in the Clinton-Lewinsky era.
Kevin Rowland is a LEGEND.. Dexy's have been around for decades in one form or another but always with Kevin and Jim Paterson. Several studio albums and they are still recording today. The album "The Feminine Divine" was released only last year (2023) and the song 'My Submission' from it is amazing. I saw them in concert about 10 years ago and Kevin Rowland is still as mad as a bag of badgers! My sister introduced me to them in the early eighties. On the album 'Too-Rye-Ay' take a few minutes and listen to 'Plan B' going into 'I'll Show You', with the words and you'll see what a great songwriter Kevin Rowland is. The video made this song even more fun. These were the days of MTV all day on the television. I think this was the time before cable vision. We had a big huge satellite dish. The kind that people ended up using for goldfish ponds.

The number of transitions and bridges in this song is insane. There's like three transitions just in the first 20 seconds. And the song barely settles on having just a single bass line and single arrangement at any part.
I agree with both of the suggestions for you to react to Big Country's In A Big Country and The Proclaimers' I'm Gonna Be (500 Miles), with two caveats: 1. Neither band was a one-hit-wonder in the UK or Canada. 2. Dexy's Midnight Runners were an Irish band, whereas Big Country and The Proclaimers were proud Scotts instead. PS - I would like to suggest another "one hit wonder" - at least in so far as the Billboard top 20 is concerned. It's an obscure Canadian band called Rush.
Top hit wonder suggestion: One Night in Bangkok by Murray Head. Others: What I Am - Edie Brickell & the New Bohemians, 99 Luftballons by Nena, or even Tarzan Boy by Baltimora
Dexy is a reference to dexedrine - something the band probably had experience with to give them energy to party late into the night. Also, Kevin Rowland is of Irish decent and "Dex" or "Dexy" is a nickname for Declan (an common Irish first name and also Elvis Costello's real name). "Too Ra Loo Ra" is a nod to an Irish song otherwise known as the "Irish Lullaby" and famously recorded by Bing Crosby. The band had an Irish feel but they were from Birmingham, UK. I wouldn't call them a one hit wonder since they had two #1 hits in the UK and a handful of other songs that made the top 20 there but in the US/Canada all we know is this song.

Reached #1 in 1983, between Michael Jackson's Billie Jean and Beat It. During The Golden Age Of MTV and VH1, Unforgettable! :)

Always preferred "Geno" by Dexys. A timeless classic, just stunning.
