  • Ingrown toenails are a very common condition usually affecting the big toes. A partial nail avulsion procedure with phenol is a simple procedure that can be carried out to permanently resolve the problem. This video includes an illustrated explanation of the procedure. The wound usually heals in around 3 weeks or sooner if phenol is not used.

    G'day kind sir! nice video...
A 4th toe next to the "pinky" is on its way to getting more than less ingrown. Soaking 2x day with Epsom salts and tried to place a tiny piece of dental floss underneath most of the nail. But the nail has a very small crack so the floss at this stage won't fit underneath the entire front of the nail only about 80% or so. I am hoping this will be enough to soften the skin and help keep the area cleaner. That's my story and we all have one. Any thoughts? All the best to you...Cheers!

Thanks Raphael. It's hard to give security advice without seeing it. But, in principle, file any jagged edges, bathe the toe in warm salty water a couple times a day, and wear wide fitting shoes to prevent pressure from other toes against it. If it's not improving or looks infected, see your Podiatrist ASAP. All the best with it!

@@thelondonpodiatrist Thank you for taking the time to respond! don't believe there's any infection. Doing much of what your suggesting. There is a stinging sensation that can be brought on by bumping the toe lets say or it may just sting out of the blue..assuming it may be in the healing process. Cordially, Raphael

Thank you for the info. What is your opinion regarding the fact that Phenol that comes in contact with skin can cause cancer? Do you think that the amount of Phenol used in these procedures is negligible?

Hi, your question makes it sound like you are in the podiatry world? Most things are toxic in excess, including local anaesthetic. The amount used in a partial nail avulsion is around 0.3 ml at 89% strength. This is a cubic size of 3mm. It seems very safe at that dose, contacting such a small area. Also, weighing up the risks, benefits, and alternative treatments, it's seems the best we have at this time. Are there any studies you have read that concern you? Thanks for your question!

The lidocaine shots in the toe hurt me sooooo much I shouted ow each time lol. The injection sites hurt for a month afterward but is fine now! It’s the only part I struggled with !
