  • Brief video about the Merkur XR4TI and why you and I would both have been driving one in the 80’s. Enjoy
I'm actively seeking interesting cars to make videos about.

Got one of these at an auction when I was a teen in 1994. Weird as shit and nobody knew what in the hell it was including me. But everyone loved it and it turned into a legend.

No ABS brakes on the XR4Ti for any model year. The Scorpio (the four door model, 88-89 model years) did have it. This particular car you're showing is a pretty interesting example, with it's "MERKUR" script on the right side of the hatch, but no trim fairing around the rear-most side window (between the C- and D-pillars). So I guess this one was made right in the transition to the 87 to 87.5 time. Aaand, it's got no sunroof, making a so-called 'competition shell.'

I realized I goofed with the abs thing shortly after posting this. Thank you for the analysis on the exact car in the video, very interesting!

My Mom got me an 87 when I was 19 back in 1997. It was red, really fun, all my friend's thought it was so cool.

Had an 87 back in the day. Quirky design, but surprisingly good function.
Hot rodded mine with help from Rapido Group.
Engine, suspension, and brake upgrades. Sierra grille and badges. Fun as shit to drive.
Literally stole it from the dealership. They could not sell them. One of my favorite cars.😊

This was not an economy car, nor was it inexpensive. And turbo engines in the 80s were not particularly "crazy", it's just news to you, now. And don't call it a hot hatch ... this isn't some civic. Same engine that came in the Mustang SVO, T-Bird Turbo Coupe and a variation of the Mercury Cougar. Engine first appeared in the Pinto (minus the turbo and fuel injection).

They are pretty stout lima 2.3 little head work cam intercooler t3/t4 upgrade and you have your self around 300hp buttt this is big butt.
The trans is awful and without a diff it's all over the place so t5 swap lsd and serria front bumber swap with the open grill its a great little car.
The lima 2.3 is beefy all cast iron block and can handle a good amount of power just need them to flow more on both ends.

💯 they should of made a DOHC head instead of the single! the cosworth motor is the motor to go for 💯💯💯

I Bought mine New, in 1989 for $12,995 they were really Marked Down, because they were being Discontinued. White with Gray Leather Interior !! Everything was Power, Except for the Moon roof, which I thought was Odd at the time. Also, no Intercooler, which it definitely could've Benefitted from !!!

Nice video and car. I remember the Sierra from growing up in Europe. I explore care on my channel as well.

They were called the XR4i in the UK and had a 2.8 Fuel Injected 2.8 V6 (Same as the Capri 2.8 but will slightly different gearing) and they were not good cars.
Think about it. They were discontinued after a very short run, not good!
We had one, sold it when it was seven months old. It was a nightmare to drive on the motorways with strong sidewinds. It was all over the place.

the i4 turbo we have in the US is much better, so you can just import that engine from the US and swap it in an XR4i

Most of the Ford Sierras in Europe were boring sedans or wagons, the XR versions of European Fords were the hot ones. While a Merkur Scorpio makes sense, I'm surprised this ended up selling in United States!

The car I lusted over when I was a prepubescent teenager. And years later, I still want one and these are not easy to find.
Btw, I remember the TV commercials pronounced the brand as “mare coor“ or “mayor-koor” which means Mercury, the planet not 5he element, in Deutch/German.

Spoiler is for downforce and does not reduce drag -- in fact it likely increases drag a bit. In reality 95% of spoilers exist for looks only

Pimps & Legends. Rome reference. The dashboard display lit up like a Christmas tree just after you drove it off of the lot.
