Guns N' Roses were the biggest band in the world in the early 90's, but following their epic 2.5 year long Use Your Illusion Tour from 1991 to 1993, the band fell apart. The band would try to get together to write new material between 1994 to 1997, but they couldn't even write one complete song, which led to the departure of Slash in 1996, and bassist Duff McKagan and drummer Matt Sorum in 1997. It was really a combination of musical differences, business disagreements and a revolving lineup which led to a dissolution of the classic lineup. And by 1998 Axl Rose was the last member of the classic lineup still standing and he was now left to his own vices as he reassembled a completely new band from scratch and started to work on the band's highly anticipated 'Chinese Democracy. record. Now producers and band members, would come and ago with former Nine Inch Nails producer Sean Beaven and Queen producer Roy Thomas Baker being linked to the record. it was also during this time that Axl Rose became a recluse rarely making public appearances, but at the turn of hte milennium Axl started to finally show off his new lineup of Guns N' Roses.with the band playing several shows in vegas in 2000 and 2001 in addition to an appearance at Rock in Rio. As As 2002 rolled around the band launched a summer tour across Europe and played some shows in Asia. As the fall approached the MTV's VMAwere coming up and the band was set to make an appearance closing out the show. Now the band made several appearances at the VMA's in the past most notably appearing in 1988, 1989 and 1992 with Elton John. Now most people weren't hardcore Guns N' Roses fans in 2002 either had no clue who was still in the band or whether they were still making music. Now Axl's new lineup consisted of guitarist Buckethead, former Nine Inch Nails member Robin Finck, and current guitarist Richard Fortus. Also part of the lineup was punk bassist Tommy Stinson, drummer Brain and keyboardist Chris Rock N' Roll Pittman and as well as longtime member Dizzy Reed. Now Guns N' Roses would close out the 2002 VMA's playing a medley of some of their biggest hits including Welcome To the Jungle and Paradise City while also throwing in a song off their long awaited record Chinese Democracy with Madagscar. Now Guns N' Roses performing at the VMA's hadn't been announced by the network ahead of time so it came as a lot of surprise to a lot of people. In the run up to GunsN' Roses performance on the VMA's that night host Jimmyfallon who himself is a big GNR fan teased the band's appearance wearing the band's shirt under his jacket as well as making a joke about the song Patience. Then came the time, host Jimmy Fallon introduced the band and while the band's name was familiar, the faces were not including Rose. Gone was Rose's slim snake like figure of the early days, instead he wore a baggy jersey to possibly hide some weight he's gained, he also had corn rows and his face looked different as if he possibly had plastic surgery. In addition to that it appeared that Rose had lost a lot of rasp in his voice singing with a much cleaner tone and some would compare his new voice to Micky Mouse. Now following that performance the reaction was mostly poor. Axl's new appearance would dominate a lot of the discussion following the VMA's and he would even be mocked on saturday night live with Matt Damon impersonating the singer. Now Axl had his own reasons for why the performance was so lackluster that night. a nervous nervous wreck all that day. Huh? Well no i wasn't that, but everything tends to go wrong in my world. Like even going to soundcheck the police wouldn't let me down the street to go to the building. Is that right? Then the day of the show they didn't let us go down the street and I had to get out of the car and run past the police. They are telling me i have to stop and Im like gotta to sing and the best part is as i am running down the street I had to run past all the people lined up to get into the building and they're going hey there goes kid rock. I thought that was pretty funny. Now why would the police let you out, I'm kinda lost on that, you know it's their loss. Just confusion, loss, not knowing what was going on, people not having people's names on the list, not knowing what passes to check all the kinda crap.

Axl looked amazing in 1994 but by started changing for the worst in 1995...he still looked like Axl but his hair was shorter and his weight gain started. By '96 he was putting on the pounds. Axl was the main songwriter of the band not Izzy, look up credits before you spew bullcrap. All the hits were when Izzy was in the band ? factually wrong. November Rain, their biggest hit, was written by Axl. It's Izzy who has n't written one good song since he left the band. Chineses Democracy shits on everything others have released on their own. It's not even funny. Go start listening to quality music. Last but definitely not least, Velvet Revolver sucked balls. Literally, one good riff and the rest forgettable, abysmal power chord trash. They sucked so badly, they were dropped by their own label. Now, feel free to rage somewhere else......

@sha broussard Using wikipedia as a proof. Jesus, you're too stupid for your own good. Don't expect me to take you seriously. You sound like you have a chip on your shoulders and an axe to grind against Axl. He wrote more than one song. Add One In A Million, Dead Horse, Shotgun Blues, Breakdown and Estranged to the list. The very "proof" you have posted indicates the same as well. I guess you did n't notice ? it slipped you ? I'm sorry pal but I have to rain on your parade again they never were equals (if they were as you claim, then how and why did Axl take 25% of Appetite and 40% of each UYI album publishing royalties ?). All bands are dominated by certain members and in most cases those members are frontmen especially if they're founders as well. Which is the case with Axl. GUNS N' ROSES WAS FOUNDED BY AXL AND TRACII GUNS. THEY MERGED THEIR BANDS LA GUNS AND HOLLYWOOD ROSE IN ONE BAND AND AXL NAMED A NEW BAND GUNS N'ROSES (i have to write in caps because apparently you are n't the brightest tool in the shed. Pun intended). Axl is n't paying Slash and Duff anything. He took the biggest piece of pie from NITLT tour. You pull too much bullshit out of thin air. Chinese Democracy sold more than 3 million units worldwide since sales figures mean so much to you. You should upgrade your info. Velvet Revolver were dropped by their label because Liberturd tanked. Project ran its course. I mean, you can yell at the sky with fists in the air all you want but it'll change absolutely nothing. They will never write good music again. says some know-it-all on youtube. Give me a break... By all means, do rage some more.........

I like GNR when I was a kid - literally 12 years old, blown away listening to some tracks from Appetite for the first time. I was at Sam Goody the next day buying the album on cassette. And I wore that cassette out! Lies was a decent album, though I was still too young and full of energy to really appreciate it. Illusion was epic. Loved it. Worth the wait. And then crickets. I got the Sympathy For the Devil single, and the Spaghetti. But as a fan, music had moved on and GNR was completely absent.

I saw GnR in 1991. A mere two songs into the show, Axl asked the crowd what they thought. Despite the crowds' roar of approval, Axl saw one dickhead in the front row, looking at his watch as if to say "it's only been 15 minutes." This prompted Axl to boast, "Well, we're gonna be here 4 fuckin' hours!" which made several in the front row giggle. I could tell this pissed him off and the rest of the show was probably in jeopardy.
Unsurprisingly, they were gone within 20 minutes.

Saw them in 2006 I think. I Bought the tickets out of curiosity thinking it would be a train wreck. They sounded pretty good but it was just weird having Axl be the only original member on stage. They started about an hour late because of some technical issues with the equipment. This was after 2 opening acts (Papa Roach and Sebastian Bach) had already performed so I don't know if the equipment problem was real or a cover story for Axl being late. I saw them again in 2016 and the show was great. They played for over 3 hours and sounded much better. They also started right on time.

I'm sure if he got healthier and had some vocal exercises, while he may not sound exactly like he did years ago, he could come pretty close. But yeah, that performance should've never happened lol

    • @EpochUnlocked
      @EpochUnlocked 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

He was all about the looks over substance. His career should have died in the early 90s and stayed dead. His range is super limited. Faith No More and Anthrax were so much better but didn't get the recognition they deserved because they were overshadowed by pretty boy fluff bands like GNR.

My thoughts on the matter is that it was just ill-advised all the way around. Guns N Roses had already made themselves into an iconic American rock band whose songs were the soundtrack for many people's lives. Millions of people recollect important moments from their lives (having children, marriage, graduation, etc.) with GNR being the backdrop to these cherished events.
You don't fuck up something as great as that by squandering what little goodwill was even still left of you by trying to a launch a reboot of the entire band by turning it into an overwrought Nü metal monstrosity populated by a revolving door of no names that Axl cobbled together for no other reason than assembling a band lacking the clout to push back on any of Axl's bad ideas and creative misdirections.

I was at that Philly show. CKY opened, and the attitude of the crowd was kind of patient, like they knew having an opener was normal. Then Mixmaster Mike came out to play as a second opener. People were still ok with that even though having a DJ play solo was a different choice for a rock show.
But Mixmaster Mike played for about an hour and a half. The crowd knew something was wrong,
A guy sitting behind me said he had a friend that worked at the venue. He stepped into the concession area to make a phone call.
He came back and said Rose was still in NYC. He stayed there partying all night. They were trying to get him to the venue before there was a problem.
A lot of time passed with no announcement of any kind. Eventually people started throwing cups of soda from the higher levels. People on the floor area started throwing folding chairs.
A man walked on stage and said the show was cancelled. The rioting intensified. I saw a few of the bottom parts of the arena seats being thrown from the upper levels. You know the type of seats in a lot of movie theaters.
People were throwing more cups and anything else they could find. People at the very top of the arena were ripping pieces of the ceiling and throwing it to the floor.
I held my arms above my head and made it out to the concession area without getting hit by anything. The security guards bailed. All the concession areas had pulled down the metal closures. A guy was beating on one of those closures yelling E-A-G-L-E-S over and over. I saw a woman on the floor waiting for EMT aid. A guy said she got hit in the chest from one of those bottom pieces of the chairs that people were throwing from the upper levels. Those chairs aren’t just cushions. The cushions have metal on the bottom side of them.
I made it outside and walked right buy about 40 cops in full riot gear on their way inside the building.
The next day Axl would not apologize despite people getting hurt.

The problem with Chinese Democracy is basically stated in the beginning of this video. That Axl chose a producer for the album that produced Queen and also one that had produced NIN albums. Axl kind of wants to be in a classic rock band but also wants to be Nine Inch Nails.
The album was all over the place and had no flow to it. The songs weren't very memorable and were overproduced. I did enjoy the song "Better" I will say. I think he just worked on the album way too long and tried to make this epic record that would be all things to rock fans. But it was more than a day late and a dollar short. Also, his new lineup was like something out of "This is Spinal Tap". Lol
