I think it was May 2021 that I went. in May the snowmelt from the mountains forms a river right in front of the dunes. It's freezing cold, but it was amazing to see. I didn't have time to stay long. It was significantly more crowded in the park than when you were there, likely because of the river.

If you think sand is fun...try climbing a sand mountain. You will change your mind pretty quick
