    MY LINKS:linktr.ee/Seth...
Barrett’s Privateers was released in 1976 on Stan's album Fogarty’s Cove. The song, a modern sea-shanty, was apparently inspired after a session with Friends of Fiddler’s Green at the Northern Lights Festival Boréal.
The song has been covered by many artists, notably by The Real McKenzies and Alestorm, and is also the unofficial anthem of many Canadian (especially Nova Scotian) institutions, and even the Royal Canadian Navy. I hope my rendition does this beautiful song even an inkling of justice, though none will ever compare to the original. Also, apologies for my expression. I don't know why I look so apathetic.
    Lyrics:
    Oh, the year was 1778
How I wish I was in Sherbrooke now
A letter of marque came from the king
To the scummiest vessel I've ever seen
God damn them all! I was told
We'd cruise the seas for American gold
We'd fire no guns, shed no tears
But I'm a broken man on a Halifax pier
    The last of Barrett's Privateers
    [Verse 2]
Oh, Elcid Barrett cried the town
How I wish I was in Sherbrooke now
For twenty brave men all fishermen who
Would make for him the Antelope's crew
God damn them all! I was told
We'd cruise the seas for American gold
We'd fire no guns, shed no tears
But I'm a broken man on a Halifax pier
    The last of Barrett's Privateers
    [Verse 3]
The Antelope sloop was a sickening sight
How I wish I was in Sherbrooke now
She'd a list to the port and her sails in rags
And the cook in the scuppers with the staggers and jags
God damn them all! I was told
We'd cruise the seas for American gold
We'd fire no guns, shed no tears
But I'm a broken man on a Halifax pier
    The last of Barrett's Privateers
    [Verse 4]
On the King's birthday we put to sea
How I wish I was in Sherbrooke now
We were 91 days to Montego Bay
Pumping like madmen all the way
God damn them all! I was told
We'd cruise the seas for American gold
We'd fire no guns, shed no tears
But I'm a broken man on a Halifax pier
    The last of Barrett's Privateers
    [Verse 5]
On the 96th day we sailed again
How I wish I was in Sherbrooke now
When a bloody great Yankee hove in sight
With our cracked four pounders we made to fight
God damn them all! I was told
We'd cruise the seas for American gold
We'd fire no guns, shed no tears
But I'm a broken man on a Halifax pier
    The last of Barrett's Privateers
    [Verse 6]
Now the Yankee lay low down with gold
How I wish I was in Sherbrooke now
She was broad and fat and loose in the stays
But to catch her took the Antelope two whole days
God damn them all! I was told
We'd cruise the seas for American gold
We'd fire no guns, shed no tears
But I'm a broken man on a Halifax pier
    The last of Barrett's Privateers
    [Verse 7]
Then at length we stood two cables away
How I wish I was in Sherbrooke now
Our cracked four pounders made an awful din
But with one fat ball, the Yank stove us in
God damn them all! I was told
We'd cruise the seas for American gold
We'd fire no guns, shed no tears
But I'm a broken man on a Halifax pier
    The last of Barrett's Privateers
    [Verse 8]
The Antelope shook and pitched on her side
How I wish I was in Sherbrooke now
Barrett was smashed like a bowl of eggs
And the Main truck carried off both me legs
God damn them all! I was told
We'd cruise the seas for American gold
We'd fire no guns, shed no tears
But I'm a broken man on a Halifax pier
    The last of Barrett's Privateers
    [Verse 9]
So here I lay in my 23rd year
How I wish I was in Sherbrooke now
It's been 6 years since we sailed away
And I just made Halifax yesterday
God damn them all! I was told
We'd cruise the seas for American gold
We'd fire no guns, shed no tears
But I'm a broken man on a Halifax pier
    The last of Barrett's Privateers

I have never heard this in entirety before… it’s beautiful. Don’t worry, bud-you really do this justice… I love your remasters and new content so much(:
But I just wanted to add that I loved your older work, too, before it was remastered. I don’t ever want you to feel like you’ve done a bad job before, or had a low quality career start. As a (Irish hisfic) writer, I-and I know you can relate to this-pour so much of me into my work… and I can’t help but sometimes feel like the way people react to my work is how they react to me. If someone doesn’t like my work, old or new, I just feel like they’re rejecting me, too, and all the heart, self, and soul I pour into it that they never see. I know it’s silly but maybe you feel that way sometimes, too, whether you say it or not… so just know that at every step, your work-and every part of you therein-is loved… and brilliant!

I admire how much you pour into your work and how very brave you are to share these with me💚💚💚 I know the fear and vulnerability that requires… as does trying new angles as you are. I think it’s wonderful(: I really feel like I’m on the sea (minus the nausea). You have done an incredible job and I’m very proud of you… and I can’t express how I have needed this this week.

    • @menyou1443
      @menyou1443 2 ปีที่แล้ว

I can see where you might get that, though I don’t quite hear it that way. His expressiveness (emotional, visual, verbal) is definitely something that adds a lot to the music for me too.
But regarding your last line, I can tell from the shine in his eyes that his heart is in everything… and so much. He’s got a lot on his mind (and before has cited feeling overwhelmed by life balance). It may not always come across perfectly, but his heart is there… it’s absolutely there. It takes far too much to produce a single video for his heart not to be in it…

    • @everrettbreezewood3665

@@menyou1443 Oh, please don't get me wrong. He loves making music and loves the song (and I think the song goes well with his style). It just seems like this time it was stiff and forced. Like he wasn't in the mood when recording, but did it to release a song "on time" anyway. It just doesn't seem like what I've come to expect from SSW.
I am a tremendous fan of both SSW and Rogers. Stan's Barrett's Privateers was a lot harder to compete with than his The Idiot, so that may also have something to do with it.

@@everrettbreezewood3665 fair enough; actually, I can definitely hear that now that you mention it. Probably just a rough day (by the way, Seth, if you read this, and it was, I’m sorry and here’s a hug from me to help💚💚💚). But yea, I kinda get you. When he remasters this one, he can take that into account. I don’t like it any less, but you have a decent point. He still did a good job, but I did definitely get a little less emotional cue in this one, and I had to read into it through his subtlest cues.

I am trying to keep an ambitious schedule, but I don't expect all of my covers to be better than the original, especially when covering a master of the art like Stan Rogers. Some just serve to add my voice to a song I love.
