19 for 19, and was 31 for 31 each of the last two years. Amazing series, Jason. Thank you! On the sterile cockpit rule, I was flying with my 3-year old son in the back seat a few years ago doing an ILS approach and he was crying loudly in the back seat because I had muted the back seats. Fun times!

19/19. IFR to min (and once below min to a miss) is no joke, only did it with another pilot or an instructor. Single pilot with precious cargo would be a notch more challenging ! Good job . Your safety assistants are too cute :)
I lied. I thought I was 21/21, but I must have missed this one. Very good video, and your kids are wonderful! I haven't had a lot of hard IFR approaches but I have NEVER flown a coupled approach, except on X plane, and MSFS. Not even practice approaches. I have an auto pilot, but not the modern electronics for it. I could use the LOC capture on my IIIB, but never have. In fact, my very first IFR flight right after I got my instrument rating, I flew all the way from Rapids City, SD, to Sioux city by hand. I was so nervous, I forgot I had an auto pilot! Even my recent IPC, I didn't use the auto pilot. Well, now I truly am 21/21....
19/19. Verbal callouts at 100 ft increments great habit-feel the cadence, know the pace, it's choreography and if the numbers are off, you'll know immediately. Driving, I do this for intersections to know if yellow light is safe: 5-4-3-2-1-0 with 0 being in the middle of the intersection.
Recently shot my first approach to mins on my first OE trip as an FO. Heart was pounding even with a second pilot. Can’t imagine doing it single pilot.
I shot an approach to minimums about 4 days after I got my instrument. Never saw the runway. In mountainous terrain. I've never been so scared in my life. I told atc I was going missed and they replied. Continue missed we can't vector you yet. Chills man. Chills.
Great video … I love flying with my kids and use your briefing about “water from the wing” in a fuel leak scenario. Can’t wait until the kids can PIC and I can sit in the back seat. Now that will be something. lol

19 for 19. Catching up after life got in the way of daily watching. I'm learning a lot even though you're now talking about stuff I'm not ready for. The safety aspect here is applicable to both IFR and VFR conditions. Thanks for the videos and the time you're taking to help anyone who wants it.
Absolutely agree with your point about being proficient at both autopilot coupled and hand flown approaches. I was in a Cirrus flying an RNAV approach using the AP and, upon intersecting the FAF, noticed that the flight director wasn't descending on the glide path. I immediately disconnected the AP and hand flew it. This issues come up and it's good to be prepared for them!
I ALWAYS verbalize my approach brief, what I am checking, all bugs - altitudes, headings, MDA/DA, altitude callouts, distance from fixes, GLUMPS, starting timer, callout ground contact, when on isntruments, sterile cockpit, etc.
19 for 19. Some excellent points here. I like the attitude about staying humble and respectful of flying an approach with the serious requirements that it entails. I also like the idea of talking through things as it does help facilitate the thinking process! The sterile cockpit is something to keep working toward!!

19 for 19! I had an approach where the final approach course was not picked up by the autopilot. Not sure why but had to hand fly the balance. It worked fine because I am always hand flying following the autopilot in case of such a glitch.
I am 19 for 19 I thought it went Good even with Your little one talking, Great Multitasking, I think you still had a good sterile cockpit going, and I wonder if it is really all that important. The way you handle it, I think it was perfect.
19/19 and all interesting stuff although I am only VFR. You asked us to pick you up on RT a few days ago..... Jason, it should be "Runway 36 cleared to land callsign" not "36 cleared to land thanks"

It was 4 days after I got my instrument rating. Probobly the most proficient I've ever been. I shot an approach to minimums. Didn't pop out of the clouds in a mountainous area. Now that's not something I'll do again in a hurry.
Jason, do you have any advice for someone with very few instrument hours to build confidence? I got my IFR but was so uncomfortable actually flying IFR that I never did a solo IFR flight. I’m working on recurrent to prep for an IPC now but I’m still worried about a confidence / comfort level issue preventing me from using the privileges. Thanks!
19/19. Vocalizing your briefings also prevents you from rushing through. You speak slower than you think. Speaking out loud you're less likely to forget things and you have more time to remember what you briefed so you do it.
19 for 19. Great video. I'm very familiar with flying with the kids on board. Here's a little tip when making an instrument approach. If the wind is cross during the approach and you pop out of the bottom of the clouds, the runway will not be directly in front of you, because you're flying crosswind. Whether the autopilot was flying the approach, or you're flying the glideslope yourself, you've been compensating for the crosswind the entire time you were in the soup. Now that you've popped out of the soup, a common temptation as soon as you see the runway is to turn the airplane directly towards it. But remember, you've been crabbing through the clouds this whole time. So if you turn towards the runway, you'll quickly be off course. This is especially important when shooting an approach to minimums in a relatively strong crosswind. Assuming you're precisely on the localizer, the moment you pop out of the clouds, don't change your sight picture, even if that means the runway is off to the side. Crab it down to the runway, then make your crosswind landing.
19/19. If he cleared you directly to the IF and you didn’t do a procedure turn, shouldn’t he have said “cleared straight-in approach?” Also, I can confirm that there have been times where the autopilot did not perform as expected and I had to takeover or make my student takeover.
I'm briefing all of my passengers with, "an emergency is if there's fire and blood" from now on. Thank you and Gavin so much.

I find a formal plate brief really helpful. Eg reading in the same order each time. Gets my brain ready for what is happening
