Malaysian here. Hearing Simon try to pronounce Malay words is absolutely hilarious. Fandey is pronounced just like Fendi as in Fendi the brand. This case was pretty big here actually and there was even a movie made titled “Dukun”. Black magic is still an active thing in the Malay community and people are still making it a business going as far as selling their services online during these trying times 😂.
American here- thanks for sharing about this case/pronunciation! Malay words are some of my favorites to try and figure out how they’re supposed to sound! Malaysia is beautiful and I hope to visit!

Malaysian here with a few comments and thoughts on this case/episode: - Yes, 'ringgit', or more specifically, 'Ringgit Malaysia (RM)' is the currency here. - Witchcraft is actually popular here in the country, most popularly used to break relationships apart (couples, families, etc.). - Correct me if I'm wrong, but the 'taken into the woods part' might refer to the Bunian people. They are basically like faeries, and the folklore is somewhat similar to the Western ones. - Yes, the title of 'Datuk/Dato' is similar to knighthoods in the UK. Similarly, even though the title can elevate your status in society, at the same time people seem to have a negative view of those who 'earned' this title due to the fact that, for some time until a few years ago, this title can actually be bought instead of earned. Pahang is arguably the easiest state to 'earn' this title. - 'Bomoh' is also known as traditional doctors here. So the story about seeing a 'better doctor' that Simon shared is actually a very common story here; some people preferred to be treated by these bomohs instead of doctors at hospitals, only because the diagnosis is different to what they believed in. - Showering flower petals on the patients is a common ritual practiced by the bomohs. This is called 'mandi bunga' (flower bath), supposedly meant to cleanse the person's soul. - Pontianak is a popular ghost/folklore in Malaysia and Indonesia. The common backstory seems to be that they are souls of women who died in childbirth and often not in peace. Anyone interested in a version of this pontianak story and look up the Malaysian movie 'Pontianak Harum Sundal Malam'. - 'Dukun' is a movie first shot and was slated to be released back in 2007, but due to protest from Mona Fandey's family, the film was not released, until a few years ago. I believe the film is available online with English subtitles for anyone who's interested. - That male bomoh doing a ritual to find MH370 is our country's most cringe-worthy moment of the decade. Yes, we're still cringing at that publicity stunt till this day... Love this episode, by the way. All those snide comments by Simon are the exact thoughts of almost all Malaysians who knows this story.
@@justkittensbeingkittens5892 Just a few months ago, there's a case where this young man practicing witchcraft got paid by many people to break couples apart. He would be given pictures of the couples as well as their full name and age, if I'm not mistaken. This caught the nation's attention cause they see some of their friends or relatives among those pictures. My friend from high school saw one of the visible pictures of his cousin and her fiance. He was caught when he lit up a small fire in his living room to practice dark magic. When the fire dept went to investigate, all was revealed.
Thanks for the insights. Witchcraft is odd tho, my mum is from brasil and is actually scared of voodoo and the likes, even when i explained and showed her the studies showing how "black magic" works etc. Is there a push to remove Witchcraft in Malaysia? Or is this just so deeply ingrained? Oh, and one last question, is "white/good magic equally used or is this nore a black magic idea in Malaysia? Have a good one and thanks again fir the insights.
Simon talking about witchcraft in Africa in the beginning made me chuckle because as a kid in Africa, I remember believing that witchcraft is huge in Europe. Especially France for some reason 😂😂
As a French, i can say...no...not really... actually not at all. Maybe its a frequent stereotype for far away can countries because legend translate very well from one culture to another. More than most things i would say.
19th century France was different. The traditions commonly associated with Voodoo like the dolls are French in origin and other connections among Benin(and such countries), Haiti and France are just pure coincidences - because one Black magician wanted to curse me for my claims.
Witchcraft is actually a notion that is weirdly pervasive, almost all human societies have developed a similar concept of witchcraft, seemingly independently, despite it obviously having no basis in reality. I think Simon might’ve been talking about those recent cases in Malawi where some people were lynched for witchcraft, Americans generally hear that and just assume all of Africa is like that because they don’t care to distinguish between different African countries.
@@localman7017 I meant the technical aspects shared among cultures under French influence up to 20th century - like Jacques Chirac or vevé of Voodoo/french sigils, also the trend of French people learning exotic occultism abroad for example in Benin and superstitious tradition of exchange of magicians among politician as a form of politics. As a psychiatrist with a lot of experiences with "occult accidents" I wouldn't call it without any link to reality - at least subjective reality is obviously affected beyond exoectations in various ways. Of course there is nothing like real magic as it is believe of magical thinking cultures. But I can describe many events, when effects oh the subjective reality were beyond exoectations. If you want there is nothing to hide.
Now I want a series called "The Occasional Occultist" Just a bunch of ribbing on the subject matter while covering creepy/paranormal stories. Would be great.

Me as a Malaysian: Aiyah it's okay lah Simon. We ourselves also cannot pronounce our own people's names also Yes we speak like that, it's Manglish and we also speak in legit English
Iv heard Manglish in movies and documentaries, never seen it written. I thought it would be tough to understand like when hearing it, but it written out makes sense in my brain
Thanks so much for covering this case, Simon and team! I remember the case being covered heavily by the media when I was a kid but I never bothered to read further about the case after she was hanged. Yeah, a portion of Malaysians do strongly believe in the supernatural and each race has their own beliefs especially in the more rural parts of the country. In fact, I previously worked as a healthcare worker in a rural part of Malaysia and the number of times our patients requested to be discharged because they believe in the healing powers of the local bomoh more than us is disheartening. Many times, they came back to us because the disease worsened but by the time they do (and some never even did come back to the hospital, so we suspected the worse), there's not much we can do but provide palliative care. We do try to explain to them the consequences to the best of our abilities, but in the end, we have to respect their autonomy and the local culture and belief. Also, the Malay language (and to an extent, Filipino - as I've heard) is not difficult to pronounce at all! They are pronounced the way they are spelt. So Juraimi is literally pronounced as Ju-Rai-Mi, and your pronunciation of "Aku tak akan mati" was kind of correct, good job!
If I ever become a serious criminal I've learned not to write down my crimes. Not to keep any kind of record whatsoever. Try not to have partners. Not to brag about them to anybody. Thank you so much Simon.
Hey Callum Have you considered doing a video on German serial killer Bruno Lüdke? Or how about Arno Funke (Dagobert) - not a serial killer but still interesting.
The best part of these videos is that as a listener and watcher, you can really tell you all 3 really enjoy what you do and it makes it that much more enjoyable as a listener/watcher.
Jen needs a huge round of applause for the stellar clips she adds to the videos. Callum has the amazing writing, Simon for his hilarious commentary, and Jen for the edits, to make the best content on TH-cam. But I laugh so hard when she adds the funny clips about herself or when Simon makes a joke. Absolutely kills me and I look forward to it every time. Also ringets or however its spelled is not in Harry Potter lol
My family lived in Malaysia in the 70s, in a suburb of KL. Our neighbor was a well-known movie actress and her very weird husband invited us to witness a bomoh cast out a curse from her. He claimed his "enemies" put curses on him, but he was so strong, they bounced off him and landed on her. He himself was the curse put on her, in our estimation. I was once visiting a friend's family and her very small brother whispered to his mother in Malay, "Is she a vampire (pontianak) ?". I chuckled and the mother asked if I knew what that was. I asked why he thought I was a vampire and she said that a vampire was supposed to be a tall white woman. I assured the little guy that I was not one.
The US has something similar. Guilt by association and inaction. Like, the driver of a getaway vehicle is guilty of any murders, planned or accidental, during the course of the crime. Same as if you knew person A was going to murder person B and didn't call the police, warn person B to call the police, or any other "reasonable" actions, you're also guilty of the murder.
Damnit, after the statement of Simon wanting to be a wizard and the bald comment, I'm now gonna see Simon as Bob the skull helping Dresden from now on.
I can't explain just how obsessed I've become with Mona Fandey for some reason (and I hate true crime videos and murderer documentaries)... this whole case is so bizarre and interesting. I've listened to her music more times than I care to admit and I've read everything I could find about her. I've also become enthralled by videos of groups visiting the ruins of her house. Either I need professional help or the Casual Criminalist did such a splendid job of fascinating us with this superb video that I've never been able to stop thinking about it.
I wouldn't say everyone sees themselves as the main character, I have often felt like an NPC in the world and everyone else are the main characters, it's somehow just my job to help them along the journey... But I am an odd one...
There is something. Called depersonalization derealization disorder... It's a condition where you feel like you aren't real or you are viewing yourself from outside your body...
Then you’re not an NPC, you’re a Support main NPC doesn’t give a sh*t about the hero’s journey they just want them to collect their chickens while the world’s burning
Dang, Simon. I didn’t expect you to cover this. I happened to know that this person happened to be a back house neighbour of my dad’s old friend, and she happened to be living in a neighbouring neighbourhood near where I reside. And that is scarily enough to even note about the whole thing which was also a black mark in Malaysian history, that even inspired a horror movie or two.
As a malaysian, I gotta admit I fangirled when you released this video!! Lol. There are lots of ghost stories and urban legends surrounding her. They made a movie about this that got banned from being aired but it finally got released a few of years ago! The movie is called “Dukun” (2018)
The more money you give the shaman (US evangelical preacher), the more money the universe (Jesus) will give to you. Yeah, same grift, different country.
@@merebrillante ironically Jesus advocated for paying taxes "give unto Ceasar what belongs to him" but yeah it's true same grift different country and when Simon was describing Malay witchcraft, I thought Malaysia might as well be Zimbabwe bc everyone seems to have a relative-friend-aunt's sister who dissappeared by magic haha
I love to just listen mostly but then I miss out on Jenn's amazing work like when I look up from whatever I'm doing it's always the best possible addition so thank you so much Jenn we love you
In the US we have "Felony Murder". If you committed a felony and someone, anyone, dies in the course of that felony (even if it was the police officer who shot the innocent civilian in the pursuit) you can be found guilty of that murder. You caused the events that created the death by committing a felony. Misdemeanors get a pass a guess.

Vudu is a west African religion and cultural tradition. To compare with other lay definitions: 1) Vudu-Ecstatic physical experiences (these are common in folk religion), Pappadocs (the Vudu "priests") are Sorcerers and Psychics who curse and cure by a combination of herb based remedies and battling of demons and monsters (read: evil spirits) on the psychic plane. To do this requires a serious buzz. 2) Wizardry is the use of summoned demons or spirits, or sympathetic spellcasting, in order to obtain effect in the real world. To do this, a serious buzz helps. 3) Alchemy and sorcery are pretty much the same thing for different reasons. The use of chemistry/herbal blends to obtain effect in the real world. When one does this, one discovers all kinds of ways to catch a serious buzz. Check out the compositional history of "Soma". 4) Hedge Wizardry is common everywhere. Weird old women (and occasionally men) are accused by locals of every kind of magical indignity, including cows giving thin milk and chickens refusing to lay eggs. In this case, the magic lies in the minds of culturally biased "sane" folks.
Honestly the closest thing to (the western idea) of magic I've ever seen is actually quantum mechanics. The outcomes of experiments are affected by observing them, things exist and don't exist at the same time (quantum superposition), particles move through solid objects (quantum tunneling) and particles spring in and out of existence for barely and not fully understand reasons. Heck there is even a serious chance that reality as we know it dosent actually exist and is just a projection form actual reality...in short you don't have to be insane to study quantum mechanics, but it helps.
I love your content Simon, particularly your asides. Thanks for adding a hint relatable of humor and humanity to true crime. Your channels are my favorite on YT and I watch all your content, keep it up!
Simon is correct, he’s talking about the ‘Joint enterprise’ law. All that is required to be convicted under that law is know that person is armed. If you know your friend has a knife, and they kill someone you will be found guilty of the murder also. It’s quite a controversial law as it’s often more heavily applied to ethnic minorities
@@Kaltagstar96 pretty much. It’s supposed to discourage gangs but it won’t. It’s almost impossible to defend yourself in that situation, you can’t prove you didn’t know they had a knife or intentions to harm someone. All they have to prove is you were there and you have a relationship with the perpetrator
@@flowerfan70 Like, it seems like there's some questions to be asked about that law, like if you and your friends were having a night out and your friend got drunk and kicked someone's head in, while that is horrible, you would have no idea that he was going to do that unless you're a mind reader.
@@Kaltagstar96 totally agree! Like I said, they have a habit of using it with young, working class boys of colour. It’s unfairly used, and super inconsistently as well
Hey Simon, I’m a Malaysian viewer/listener. I was so surprised to see this and glad you did it. Just as a background, in the beginnings of our nation, access to hospitals and doctors are limited. We didn’t have highways and roads as you saw when you visited. Therefore people in a village will consult an eldest in the village usually they used herbs and spices to cure people from their sickness. Of course not all people were physically sick, for those that actually needed a psychiatrist - they called possessed with demons and these elders were expected to cast them out. Hence the business grew to curses, spells and blessings for a fee of course - I mean if you see a business opportunity might as well bank it right?! Capitalism 🤷🏽♀️ Now Drs and hospitals are widely available, but people still do believe them especially when western medicine fail them or if it is their up bringing. Rich people go to them to be richer and more powerful - Datuk is a title usually given to an accomplished person and at this time and even now it has been given to rich people for fee (losing its credibility) and most of these people are corrupt politicians hence the meme used of her as a protest against the government. You did butcher the names though but you’re given a pass, definitely not easy for a westerner. Would definitely love to see more south Asian cases. There is one controversial case - Altantuya murder - would love to hear Callum’s take on it. The video was a bit long because you stopped to rant that witches and ghost are not really every time it came up… we got it the first time 😜
September 12th 1933 two men were hung in Amherst Nova Scotia, both convicted of a murder only one committed. The judge said although only one committed the crime the other covered up the fact and both benefited financially from it so both were hung.
I don't believe in ghosts, BUT I DID at one point live in kinda a haunted house where a lot of stuff happened... My grandfather who wanted to see the house (and liked playing pranks on people) died the day my parents got the deed to it... Here's a list of stuff that happened: My parents heard footsteps at nighttime (although tbf that may have been me as a kid since I liked walking over to this stained glass window at nighttime and just admiring it for some reason)... My dad had one time he tried to open the door but it wouldn't open as if a person was on the other side pushing the other direction until finally the door just opened... There was a time I had my baby monitor make weird wind sounds and it came unplugged on its own, my parents ran upstairs and noticed it unplugged so they plugged it back in and went back downstairs and it happened again, so this time my mom plugged it in and waited outside the door and after awhile she checked and it was unplugged (even though the cord had one of those heavy plastic boxes on it that was in the air which you would've thought would make a loud thud, but apparently there was no thud sound like you would've expected (as if it was put down gently)... There was a time I was sleeping and my mom heard an RC car toy driving on its own downstairs so she called out to my sister since she didn't want it waking me up, but then my mom realized my sister was at her friend's place so she didn't know how the RC car was making sounds... My sister had these toy horses with these red buttons on them where you'd press the button and they'd move and make whiny sounds, those horses though would go off on their own creeping my sister out sometimes though they stopped after we moved out of the house... My sister also had a Furby which my mom put out of her reach in the closet at night... When my sister woke up she freaked out and called for my mom because the Furby was at the end of her bed... There was one time my whole family was downstairs and I kept insisting that "I got to go" because someone upstairs was calling me... No one was upstairs and my mom did not let me go upstairs (though now she says she's curious what would've happened if she let me lol)... I don't remember it though since I was quite young... Might be missing some stories, but that's the ones I remember hearing about that house... Also I think there was one time my sister had an ear infection which she was going to go in to get it treated medically and then they realized that it had miraculously healed itself completely overnight which was a bit odd... ALSO my mom has this one story unrelated to the house where she went to a trip in Scotland, specifically to an old battlefield... Her brother (my uncle) was there too along with my grandmother and my uncle was asking questions while recording a video since they're pretty into believing ghosts... In the video, my uncle asked what happened on X year that he thought the battle took place, then in the video you hear a pretty clear whisper of "I don't know" (this being the 'ghost' which doesn't really sound like my mother, uncle, grandmother or even their tour guide), then you hear my mom correcting my uncle on the date because he asked about the wrong date (which obviously maybe lines up with why this maybe-ghost was confused by his question xD)... But yeah, according to them no one heard the voice whisper that while they were recording the video... So yeah, lots of ghost stories... Don't really believe in ghosts, but like with God I'm a bit agnostic and won't say it's IMPOSSIBLE... Just highly improbable... I'd be willing to believe it, but I'd need some firsthand experience while being of fairly sound mind (now that I'm an adult)... I'd definitely consider the possibility of it being a hallucination though, really just depends how convincing it is as a real thing... Like, if I just see a glimpse of a ghost and do a double-take and it's not there, that could just be in the hallucination category... If I actually see a ghost chilling there for like 30 seconds reacting to what I do and stuff, then it's like either I've suddenly become insane out of nowhere or this is legit...
If Simon is ever being interrogated for anything I think they just need to give him a script of a similar crime and he might just talk himself into jail
First Day of school today in Austria. Being a teacher and a strong addict to your channels, I got up an hour early just to watch your Video. It is 6am now and it was totally worth it 🤗👍
I did not believe in ghosts until I was about 16 and saw a guy walking up my stairs. I was alone and freaking out hiding in my closet under clothes I ripped off the hangers. Any way after what felt like forever and nothing happened I peered out of my room, explored the house and no person. This repeated several times and after about the 6 time I got brave and peered out my bedroom door which was the first room off the landing, to my surprise it “walked or floated” to the top of the landing and vanished. This repeated many more times, as I got braver I looked over the railing and he was see-through with no legs from the knee down. Then I started to try to talk to him, he was in a loop doing the same action every time… I have seen many more ethereal beings over the years, luckily nothing bad… If I am crazy well so be it… but until you experience it, you will say you don’t believe !!!
It's nice to know Simon reads the comments. Sidenote image Simon telling bedtime stories 🤣 oh his daughter won't realise how funny he is till she is older but priceless.
I understand being sceptical of spirits and the unknown. I have only had one time that changed my view on this. one time i had a friend over and offered him a coffee . I asked him what he wanted in the coffee he said "two sugars " and that was fine . i made his coffee and brought it to him and then sat down on the couch beside my friend and as i sat down i noticed the sugar bowl just fell on the coffee table in front of me about 3 feet away from me . my wife picked up the bowl of sugar and ny friend has never came back to my home. it is too bad because i believe the ghost was a good host

Any other comparison, no idea about the brand name Fendi.
I think I know how it may be said but not a sure idea really 🤔

Malaysian here with a few comments and thoughts on this case/episode:
- Yes, 'ringgit', or more specifically, 'Ringgit Malaysia (RM)' is the currency here.
Wait wdym witchcraft is used to break relationships apart? like how common are we talking lol
Good analysis my friend, coming from a Malaysian myself
I love when local people from wherever the crimes happen give us more info, terima kasih!

We think the same thing about Africa.

Sick intro Jenn, that's one hell of an entrance

I honestly want a shirt that says NPC.
I feel the same way, a lot.
Same! I often feel like the ugly friend who is only there so the main character has someone to tell their story
There is something. Called depersonalization derealization disorder... It's a condition where you feel like you aren't real or you are viewing yourself from outside your body...
Then you’re not an NPC, you’re a Support main
NPC doesn’t give a sh*t about the hero’s journey they just want them to collect their chickens while the world’s burning
Dang, Simon.
I didn’t expect you to cover this. Vudu is a west African religion and cultural tradition. To compare with other lay definitions:
1) Vudu-Ecstatic physical experiences (these are common in folk religion), Pappadocs (the Vudu "priests") are Sorcerers and Psychics who curse and cure by a combination of herb based remedies and battling of demons and monsters (read: evil spirits) on the psychic plane.

I mean, doesn't that seem by guilty by association?
@@Kaltagstar96 pretty much. It’s supposed to discourage gangs but it won’t. It’s almost impossible to defend yourself in that situation, you can’t prove you didn’t know they had a knife or intentions to harm someone. @@flowerfan70 Like, it seems like there's some questions to be asked about that law, like if you and your friends were having a night out and your friend got drunk and kicked someone's head in, while that is horrible, you would have no idea that he was going to do that unless you're a mind reader.

Capitalism 🤷🏽♀️
Now Drs and hospitals are widely available, but people still do believe them especially when western medicine fail them or if it is their up bringing.

I don't believe in ghosts, BUT I DID at one point live in kinda a haunted house where a lot of stuff happened... My grandfather who wanted to see the house (and liked playing pranks on people) died the day my parents got the deed to it... Here's a list of stuff that happened:
My parents heard footsteps at nighttime (although tbf that may have been me as a kid since I liked walking over to this stained glass window at nighttime and just admiring it for some reason)...
Witchcraft is a thing in many countries including here in the states.
Well it really depends on where you live. Where I’m from witchcraft is super super frowned upon. But when I lived down south it seemed more common
If Simon is ever being interrogated for anything I think they just need to give him a script of a similar crime and he might just talk himself into jail

He‘s denying the ghosts an awful lot. Sounds like someone‘s scared…
Then I started to try to talk to him, he was in a loop doing the same action every time…
I have seen many more ethereal beings over the years, luckily nothing bad… If I am crazy well so be it… but until you experience it, you will say you don’t believe !!!

It's nice to know Simon reads the comments. Sidenote image Simon telling bedtime stories 🤣 oh his daughter won't realise how funny he is till she is older but priceless.
Your little story about almost accidentally allegedly smuggling a little bit of cannabis, highlights the insanity of its prohibition!
I'm SO glad that we finally got a Malaysian case here! and a long one at that haha
I honestly love how sloppy and silly Simon was in this 😂 it's refreshing to see the less serious side of someone who is always so professional!!! Great work as always everyone 💖
Thought I was seeing ghosts once. One psychiatrist appointment later and it turns out it was just the insomnia giving me some cheeky hallucinations.
I don't think I've ever seen Simon's elbows.
I hope he has some
Then you need to go check out Brain Blaze 😉
It's because he's a floating head
@@skaerup The amount of elbow we see over there is insane, and all the moving of them too.
You haven’t lived.
Every time Simon says 'witch doctor', that song plays in my head 🎵ooh ee ooh ah ah ting tang walla walla bing bang 🎵.
Suggestion for an episode The Kitty Genovese murder. The murderer and the fake results of the bystander effect.
He's done a video about the bystander effect and mentioned the murder on another channel, but learning more about the actual murder would be interesting.
Very good, Simon. "Pictures get hung. People get hanged."
Ringgit sounds a bit like gringots the bank in HP?
They use gold galeons, silver sickles and bronze knuts.
I wish I could use that memory space for something way more interesting/useful 😞
That's alright, iv got the lyrics to over 1000 songs taking up the same space in my brain that HP is taking in yours.
@@aceundead4750 I have a mixture of both.
@@BeeLZBeeb how do you get anything done?
fun fact, 25:34 pontianak is actually a city in indonesia kalimantan, but for some reason it have been misunderstood as the supposed kuntilanak(the real ghost term) outside indonesia. lol~
Heard about her. She was happy to get limelight after the trial.
I now want a TV series about Fact Boy being haunted, but the spirits can't do anything cause his power of disbelief is so strong.
"A particular anti-witch procedure"
Callum's savage comments rule!
