At nineteen I used to drive an older man to a game every Saturday and the drive him home after. The game started at noon. The host cooked steaks for lunch and I got to eat one. The cook used to give me a hard time calling me a sweater not a player. One day there was a seat open when the game started. The way the game was run is that chips were sold. There was no rake. 10% fee on the first buy in and 5% on other buying. Everyone bought $100 for their first buying and just basically threw them in the pot on the first hand and then bought a $1,000 or more on the second. Not wanting to be considered a sweater any longer I wrote a check for $100 and got $90 of chips.
One and a half hours later, after winning a few small pots and building a decent stack. I cashed out $3,750 . This was in the late 70's in Victoria Texas. The big hand was I flopped 4 Queens and bet 100. Called by 2. Turn I bet 300 called by 2. River I bet $1,000 called by 1. Man who folded was the man I drove out to the game and he said if a heart hits the river he gets me too.
These were oil men and car dealers and such during an oil boom in Texas. The man who called the $1,000 on the river lost $50,00 that night and had a good time. He owned 3 drilling rigs making about $150k a day back then.
torn between river decision check (give up) v all-in. I think we have some showdown with our 4, but it's not likely to win. The ace is a really good card for us as the pfr since we have all the AK AQ or even AJ AT clubs. It would make sense to jam with any of those hands and it balances our whiffs (J9cc, JJ, TT, diamonds, other random clubs, middle pps)
Interesting analysis. Actually I like the 740 size. On river to call a big bet (740 or allin) , you gonna need an A or better, and your range is basically Kx, Ax FD, Qx, and JT and some other FD combos that missed. You are calling Ax+ VRs 740 or allin here, and folding worse for 740 too. Allin is unnecessary risk. This board favors him but you have the nut advantage here simply because you call bets with a narrower range than he can barrel with, so by continuing to bet he’s got to have fewer bluffs.
First of all, you look as handsome as Mark Walburg here! Great forearms, Jonathan! Very elegant physical composure at the table. Like a lovely marble copy of The Thinker. Second, amazing to watch you do everything live, that you espouse on your channel. And third? What a killer take down! Great job! Nerves of steel, I am impressed! You are the real thing. Keep the discussion of Poker never mind about sex or hotness or whatever or maybe go on some porn site.
So if I make comments about some female cause she’s so hot I don’t wanna hear any sexist comments because that’s what this sounds like. Keep them professional or pick another channel. If not, I’ll call you every time and I may even go farther than that and you can comment whatever you think it means, and I am capable of going farther.
This was a great FT to watch! I want to know if you can still find the call if he does jam! Also, I want to talk about the turn bet. I think I would’ve liked to see something like 550k-600k. That’s just me. Double flush draw with multiple straight draws but no made draw is usually the time to go big. Ofc on FT you’re probably not overbetting much? Actually I would love some content about ICM postflop! Eh??
J 10. At 9m:20s you say what I was thinking. Zaki story he could portray if he went All In would be J 10 definitely! I made my Straight on the River. Exactly. His 740k bet doesn't continue the, "I made a Straight" story. It was not the correct size bet to get you off your hand. You made the right decision. 💯 Kudos to you for figuring it all out under pressure. Crucial hand. Zaki was rattled after this.
I guess I am wrong, but 440k river bet seems more natural to me, as his value bets and bluffs want to be the same sizes. Flushes didn't get there. So what is he trying to get value from? Can those hands call an all-in? So I guess even not worth bluffing at all.
Curious if you think Zaki should have check raised in any spot. Either lose minimal or apply max pressure. I understand he's probably just playing a base solid strategy that got him there
While this flop call is for sure +chipEV, I wonder if its actually $EV profitable when 2nd in chips vs chipleader 4 handed, have you run the spot to check?
I thought the 70% river bet was too small also. I was almsot certain he would put you all in. for 740k you arent folding a K or A with the missed clubs. Sometimes I dont think you are even folding a Q. If he had a JT or a set. He would be going for max value when the A hits. The 70% bet just feels weird.
Would it be a massive punt to just shove the turn as Zaki? There is massive payout implications for you if you were to bust and there are tons of draws that he would make you fold.
I’m sorry, I have to call BS on this. And I’m a premium member of the poker coaching website. I know it’s a lot to ask, and it may not be practical, but I would like to see this kind of video of what the player or players are thinking after each betting round. The after the fact analysis takes in account the outcome of the hand. That will absolutely change the strategy thinking of the player after the fact because they would subconsciously be trying to justify their play. I’m not saying Jonathan would be lying here. I’m just saying that he could be lying and we wouldn’t know. That clouds the veracity of the situation that he is describing. I say that because almost every account of poker hands that are told, “after the fact” are told with the best possible light being shed on the teller. It’s different than sports where it’s a split second for a decision to be made. You can usually take those accounts as facts because there was no time to think. But with poker, you get a lot of time to think and choose your play. I just wish there was some way to get the thinking of the player in real time instead of days or weeks or even months after the fact.
Unfortunately, my most memorable poker moment was over betting the river with A8 on A898Q and calling an over bet shove even though I was almost positive I was beat. I just couldn’t get away from the hand. Calling stations gotta call.
I was expecting 1M or 900K, because he actually is better off not busting you. Keeping you around makes it easier to steal from the new middle stacks while they wait for you to bust or double up.
Nice video. Congratulations on the win. I thought he was going all in. I think Jonathan still finds a call. But Jonathan might fold K with a weak kicker or a Q etc. Me personally I probably don't bluff on the river, I have a hard time turning pairs into bluffs. My knee jerk reaction is I'm hoping for showdown value. If I show up with 5 high there I'm going all in if I bet flop and turn. Let's say I was on a draw. And I probably wouldn't give much thought to wether I was telling a believable story. I'm a simple man🥺🥺🥺

This hand is ICM heavy. You barely give a nod to ICM other than noting that the big stack should be extra aggressive against middle stacks. How does this impact your decisions? I like the conservative but sticky line you took, and I think ICM would support it. With more emphasis on ICM I think this hand would make an even better training example.

Seems like i fine give up showdown spot. U have a pair and the river didnt change anyhting Maybe I would go 440k but I know you could never turn down such good pot odds. Against a worse player i would though even though the shove is probaly way better in solver land.
I think Zaki and I would go all in on this spot. No flush draw was made on the river. A Broadway draw was made on the river which is the only hand I would be concerned about. Since Mr. Little did not raise me on any street, the bottom pair was the best hand based on the betting action.

Hey coach, I gave you a like as usual, but honestly, you can cut the BS and just say you decided to gamble with this hand lol. You paid a flop bet with air and you did it again on the turn with ONLY a flush draw going to the river. Zaki could have had JT as you say, but also any KQ, suited K4 or K7, a better ace. Leaving it all to luck with just one more card to come is usually a terrible advice.

I suspect Zaki thinks that the 740k accomplishes about 90% of what all-in accomplishes, with lower risk. He may think you won't fold an Ace, so it's not worth going so large.
This was not a good call on the flop irrelevant to the outcome. This is a fold when considering that even if you turn a diamond and he bets pot you cannot call. In hindsight with what happened it worked out well but this is not a profitable call with 40BB
