- What to pack this summer as a camp counselor in America, as well as J1 Visa info and some travel advice for planning your adventures afterward :) I've been quite sick so sorry if I sound a little funky, I just really wanted to make this video! Being a general counselor is great because you get to really bond with your kids.
But speciality is also great because you get to meet all types of kids and different campers
GURLLLLLLLL! THIS. IS. MAGICAL!!! I was one of those people always asking for a what to pack video and you managed to get it up two days before I fly out for my first year at camp! SAHHH CRAZY that the day is almost here. You were definitely a big help at the start of my journey because you were the one who lead me to ccusa and well I wouldn’t be going to my camp if I didn’t have them right! Ahhh this is great! I'm leaving for my first camp in about two weeks and I am so so so scared but I'm also excited and I'm so thankful that I discovered you and your channel and your tumblr because you're so positive and happy and you're such an inspiration
Trust me, I felt the same way initially and had no reason to! Something I like to remind myself is that nervousness and excitement physically feel the same way in our body - we can choose in our minds which one it is

I got a camp this year (they’re being really good about keeping everything safe and sanitary) but it’s a special case cause I went to the camp as a kid so applied directly but it means that I’m handling all the travel details (I’m in the UK but have a US passport and the camp is in the US) but it’s been crazy trying to sort out how to fly or if I can even fly in the first place, and doing quarantines on each side and sorting out my UK accommodation while I’m gone (my contract ends in June but my new one doesn’t start till September).
I’m super excited though and hope everything goes well- I keep trying to overplan everything and just watching councillors from totally different styles of camps describe their experiences. It’s weird that I’m gonna be caring for kids that aren’t much younger than me (oldest ages will only be 3 yrs younger)
I’ve been binge watching your camp videos all day, I had a ccusa member at my college a few days ago and I’m super interested in working with them, I was a bit nervous but your videos have put me completely at ease 🥰
Aw that makes me so happy! I can totally relate, the process can seem pretty daunting before you do it, but it's the greatest thing in the world :)

In my family, we have a navy blue suitcase that we've added a little cream ribbon to the top handle of so we can identify it at baggage claim, and a green suitcase that has a rainbow-coloured strap/belt tied around it.
I'm heading off for my third year as a counsellor at a summer camp in Alberta, Canada in two days!! If you do end up going up north, I highly recommend going to the Canadian National Parks in Alberta and BC, like Waterton Lakes (the most southern) Banff, Jasper, Yoho and Kootney. They are all absolutely breathtaking. Good luck this year and have fun!!

Ally Sheehan It really is! If you've ever been to Johnston Canyon in Banff it is beautiful, and then about a 2 hour drive into Kooteny National Park in BC, there's Marble Canyon which is probably even more stunning. The water is so glacial that it is white to an ice blue/green. Unfortunately there was a forest fire a few years ago, so the trees are still regrowing, however I don't think it takes away from the landscape.

I work at a camp in new york called Camp Casowasco, it's on one of the finger lakes and SO beautiful! Watching camp videos gets me so excited for camp to start!!

I think a American should makes video like this because they know usually a lot more experience going to camp and are familiar with camp in America
Freya MATTHIESSEN totally understand your perspective, but these are videos specifically made for international staff (like myself) on what WE bring :) The Americans pack completely differently, because they drive and can bring as much as they want - we have to think a little bit more.
I would love to see Americans make videos and talk about their experience with camp too. I think because they grow up going to them from age 8 or so, it’s not as exciting and different like it is to us who obtain a J1 visa and do the program.
I agree! Now I that I think about the Americans do have to pack differently and usually bring things most Americans don’t have to bring passports to camp! And most people going to America for the first time usually would like hearing from somebody who was in there shoes at one point 😊

You could visit Florida and do the theme parks, or some of the National Parks in California and Utah, or go hiking in Oregon!

I volunteer at a smaller camp in Pennsylvania. I see all these videos about nights off at other camps, but at my camp the best we get is hanging out in the mess hall after the campers have gone to bed. Of course, the camp is in the middle of no where and is an hour away from the nearest real town, so there's no reason to leave.

I'm not sure if you'll see this. But what did you do with your phone? Buy a plan for it? Or use your phone just on wifi and buy a cheap phone. If so, what did you do with the other phone? Buy a sim card that you top up? Or buy a plan for it? Sorry don't know what to do with my phone when I go next month.
Ally, stumbled across this video in my little research as I'm going to camp next week. And heard you mention that vegan chocolate for the s'mores and was so surprised as I'm vegan too! What's the food options for vegans at a typical camp like? Did you bring your own little bits of vegan food or anything or could they give you enough vegan food etc
Also what's the vagan options like in New York and travelling in general (or buying from Walmart). I'm from Dublin, Ireland (you mentioned you're part Irish too woo) and it's not that vegan friendly with restaurant options but it getting better but I'd cook at home for 90% of my meals. I feel when travelling you mightn't do so much cooking at home?

Im working at a whole new camp this year. The one that I worked at last year(2018), I had a HORRIBLE experience. But I don’t think it made me not wanna work at a summer camp again. Hey fellow Aussie ! (I'm from Tassie)... I'm off to Camp Small Valley in Pennsylvania.... I leave next Sunday so not long now (so excited)... I have my itinerary planned for post camp, already got a little group going; Boston, New York (Niagara Falls whilst we are there), DC, Miami, New Orleans, Chicago, South Dakota (for Mount Rushmore), Wyoming (for Yellowstone), Seattle, Vegas (Grand Canyon tour whilst there), San Francisco (Alcatraz and Yosemite whilst there) and finish up in LA, action packed 29 days but keen as a bean !! Hope you have an amazing (second) summer !! Your videos have been great by the way as I am a first timer :)

Oi Allow It east coast camps. Pa,nj, New York, Connecticut. Etc. look in that area

Most camps don't mind at all! When you have your interview and fill out an application you can mention that, and the camp that hires you won't care :) Plenty of camp counselors have tattoos
