How would you recommend someone prep for studying law this year? I got into law at Melbourne uni but didn't study legal studies during the HSC and don't want to start on the back foot so between now and late Feb what would you recommend?
Hey!!! so sorry for the late reply! Firstly - congrats on the offer, super exciting!!! Secondly, I didn't study legal studies at High School either & I was fine. If you want to prep, you could try and get access to the Unit guides for the subjects you're enrolling into & find out what text books you need - that way you can start the readings ahead of semester. IF you can't get access to the unit guides, jump on the Melbourne Uni Law students fb page & ask what text books are needed for first year. Ppl may even be able to sell tehm to you 2nd hand at a discounted rate. If this doesn't work either - I suggest jumping on to TH-cam / google and look up the first year subject names e.g. "foundations of law" study guides & hopefully you can find explanation videos / guides to get you started :) You could also go to the Melbourne Uni library and ask about the first year law text books :) But don't stress too much if you can't get a head start, they ease you into the first year subjects in the first week :) You can always email the tutor in the first week and ask for their advice on how to stay ahead during the semester too. Goodluck!! let me know how you go!
To be honest with you, I didn't either for the longest time!! It's all trial and error!!! Some subjects will help you get an idea of what kind of law you like - but the best way to start to know is by getting work experience in different fields of law!! That's why I strongly recommend getting a paralegal role from day 1 :) And making sure you have at least a few in different fields throughout your studies - good luck!!!
