Rory is awesome. He may not be my favorite companion but damn, he surely must have the best development. From his first appearance to now(and beyond, but I'll refrain from spoilers, obviously), he's almost a whole different person. I love him.

The hotel shows Rory exits because he doesn't believe in anything. The creature feeds on your faith, the hotel scares you to make you cling to your faith .

@@klemminguk I think it’s more than that. I think that in all his travels with the Doctor, Rory has kinda taken on the Doctor’s belief that there’s always a way out (kinda like the Doctor’s speech in ‘The Time of Angels’ episode). All their adventures since then would also sort of solidify that belief of there always being a way out and, therefore, that’s exactly what the hotel/maze/construct showed him.

The "Amy Williams" thing is more than just for Amy's benefit. The Doctor tells her a little earlier "Amy Williams, it's time we saw each other as we really are." The Doctor needs to accept that she isn't that little girl who adored him anymore that she needs to be given the chance to live her life and can't live in The Doctor's magic time bubble anymore. He's calling her Amy Williams because that's who she is not who he sees her as.😊

It's not about fear. the hotel manufactures fear as a means to an end.
The hotel has no room for Rory because he doesn't cling to any beliefs - it's the faith it needs. The fear is just how it gets you there.

    • @Leedark3
      @Leedark3 วันที่ผ่านมา

He doesn't lack fear; he lacks faith. Everything he's seen, 2000 years of human history left him with no faith in humanity or its gods. Traveling with the Doctor was different for him than Amy; he saw how dangerous the Doctor is and he died twice, so he can't have faith in the Doctor like Amy does. The hotel wanted him out because he is the most dangerous thing in the world to a wannabe god... a man without faith. It's also why Rory is so valuable as a companion. While most of the Doctor's companions believe in him to the point of worship, even someone like Mickey, Rory has seen too much. Rory can keep him honest.

David Walliams was asked to guest-star in the episode in an email and he said yes because he’s a fan of the show.
Matt Smith called David Walliams "hilarious" and found it hard to take him seriously, as when he was in his prosthetics for the part he resembled a giant mole.
David Walliams' prosthetics took about two hours to apply. He felt the make-up was not limiting to his acting, finding it "quite expressive".
It was Steven Moffat's idea to set an episode in labrythian hotel, having often found himself disconcerted by the experience of staying in hotels in the past.

I loved this one, tapping into the most primal fears, something Doctor Who does best. And a brilliant dive into the relationship between the Doctor and his companions, and more insight into the Doctor himself. Amara Karan as Rita, just amazing. I would have loved for her to be a companion. Love your insights into the episode, and it definitely the Doctor himself in his room. For me though, it would have to be the Cybermen, they've terrified me since I was a kid.

  • @avolto4822

What I love about Gibbis is how awful he is. A race of cowards. A people so utterly lacking in bravery, courage or any kind of spine. It's treated like a joke at first but we see how insidious cowardice can be. He'll abandon any one to save himself and feel no guilt or remorse for what he's done. He is entirely selfish and self serving. Not only that but Gibbis not having anything to believe in means that he would feasibly be in the labyrinth forever and would sell out any new prisoners to save himself. Imagine he incorrectly guesses he can save himself by continuously feeding people to the Minotaur and just keeps doin that for the rest of his life which might go on forever due to the labyrinth keeping the Minotaur alive for so many eons.

Imo, this is a perfect episode. It's creepy and haunting and emotional and beautiful. I've always loved plays on the minotaur mythology and I think this is one of the best. It's so elegantly written to bring us to a place where he decides to leave them. The scene where he convinces Amy to lose faith in him, and we see her as a child- so devastating. And the score in this episode is probably my favorite in the show, too. The piano at the end when he's all alone in the TARDIS. God, I love this one.
Rita is also fantastic, I wish we would have gotten more time with her, but her death scene is gut wrenching (complimentary).

It's interesting that the Doctors disdain for the Tivoli can also be attributed to himself. He ran away from the Time War and lets people die for his own sake and the sake of his friends. The Doctor hates them for the same reason he hates himself, he considers himself a coward who ran from the important things in his life, he's an expert at running.

    Hello, Jules. 💜
You look excited and ready to go this day - again, very nice colors you are wearing .
I too was enjoying your dance, but, unfortunately, the story demands to be seen and heard.
I had totally forgotten the room with the clown, but your honest reaction was a highlight point in this episode reaction. As soon as the door opened, I said Oh, she won’t like this, not a bit. 🤭😅
Gibbis is possibly the most unpleasant character in these new Doctor Who series episodes. His home world would certainly be a terrible spot to visit.
This was a great episode, which builds nicely on the returning theme, I think, of the Doctor getting a bit full of himself, just as 10 was, as he neared the end. It was disguised a little, with 11’s antics, and fun loving personality, but lay there, in the background, all along. He's dangerous.
And, as you spoke of in your previous Outro - there would come a point for you, as a companion, where you would simply have to say, “no more.” 🥲
Also, as you say in this Outro, the Doctor needs a companion, to keep him in check, so to speak, to temper his effect, on himself and, definitely, others.
He finally sees his impact, as he always does, and calls a halt to the current state of things, as he is made, to once again, see the very real effect he is capable of producing on others - the peril he puts folks in, without thinking how vulnerable they are to the situations he finds interesting, and even commonplace.
We know that Amy and Rory will be back, at least for one more - when he faces an astronaut on the shore.
A great season, so far, solid story telling, and this was no different. It had everything - dancing, laughter, horror, tension, and sadness. All the ingredients of a great Doctor Who story!
I hope you’re having a bit cooler day, Jules,💜🤗💜 continue to stay chilled and hydrated. I look forward to what remains in the current series here, and seeing your reactions, as Always. 🥰😊

"How did the doctor buy a house?! When did he do it?" He's got a time machine.... :-) As for 13's room? Well the noise you hear is the cloister bell - the 'red alert' noise the Tardis makes when it's in deep trouble, so my guess it's the Tardis dying.

The Doctor owns several houses, particularly there's 221B Baker Street (Sherlock Holmes house) which he spends a fair amount of time at during the audio story Dark Eyes. I think they go back there in Doom Coalition and Ravenous too. Haven't listened to Stranded, but apparently a lot of that takes place there. I'm sure there are other properties he owns. This was a really enjoyable episode, definitely one of the better ones of this season. That being said, clowns terrify me to! 😨Although dolls and puppets, I quite like. Even the creepy ones!
To clear up the bit about the P.E. teacher saying they'd have to do P.E. in their vest and pants, that used to be a common punishment in the UK if a student forgot their P.E. kit. Thankfully, teachers can't do that these days. Although it certainly elicits some old memories.
Love the look of the hotel. Reminds me of that game I motioned ages ago At Dead of Night. It has the feel of an old style British hotel that looks drab and outdated since the 70s.
That poor nurse tho. It's a shame she didn't make it as she was so lovely!
Although it's interesting they went with a minotaur for this episode, as the hotel felt so maze like. A nice little nod to Greek mythology there. That said, while we didn't see what was in the Doctors room, I often thought it was the deaths of Amy & Rory, hence why he was insistent on dropping them off.
Glad you like this one. I favour the smaller scale adventures like this myself. Until next episode 💚

I have a bit of a funny story about the Nimon in this episode. Years ago, I brought up Doctor Who to an online friend of mine as a show she should watch. Her response was "I can never watch that show." When I asked how come, she replied that a distant cousin of hers was a guest actor in the original Doctor Who show, specifically "The Horns of Nimon" serial, and that he later died of a drug overdose. I then asked "How do these two independent things relate to one another?" Her cousin died 7 years after his appearance on the show. Unless Tom Baker got him into morphine seven years ago, I'm betting it didn't have anything to do with his death. But she still has never seen an episode of the show.

Love that you were thinking about the practical side of the house and car and you are right - who gets the council tax bill and who pays for the insurance on the car and all that other 'life' stuff? Such a creepy episode and yes clowns would freak me out, or possibly Woody Woodpecker - I had a Woody Woodpecker book when I was little that had a really scary illustration on one page that I always had to skip over! :)

I'm not sure I can imagine what would be in my room, I honestly don't know. Probably something existential, my earliest nightmares as a very young child were about ageing and death, the idea that I will one day waste away into nothing, and the futility of it. Maybe it would be me as a withered old man with dementia?

I'm very mixed on how I feel about this episode. I think overall I like it, but I also don't like it at the same time. I'm glad you enjoyed it, I really enjoyed the reaction video of course as always! I think my feelings on this episode probably come from how it splits up Amy and Rory from The Doctor. However, we do sort of get a sense that they may want to stop traveling from past episodes as well.
The idea of the monster of this episode was interesting though. I find the rooms themselves to be far more interesting from the beast itself however. The idea of a space that can show you your greatest fear is quite interesting. It makes me question what I think my greatest fear would be? Is it something that could even be personified? For many of these, it's like a clown or a gorilla. What about a fear that doesn't really have a form? Like not living up to your potentials? I guess it could be represented through a family member or someone you know like it did for that girl.
Thanks as always for the reaction, Jules. I hope you have a fantastic day, and I can't wait for the next one!

Good episode, good reaction and thoughts, good use of the minotaurs maze and fears and what not. Testing of character dynamics. Dropped off but we will see them again like Martha. When who knows without spoiling.
Someone else to ask questions, the Doctor is logical so someone else to bring them down a bit or answer their logical side with emotion or just genuine questions about how it sounds the concept they have presented.
Not 'human' (typical and overrated but not accurate) just someone able to respond then all that thinking out loud or internal.
Just because we are human doesn't mean it is the case. We just only understand our concepts. Our language.
Any logical human may have someone to bounce ideas off with. Others think about the possibilities but still ground themselves. Others don't.
None of this emotional nonsense or oh need a human just because it's easier for audiences to relate (relating id overrated nonsense just because they can't see past their own feet) or believe compared to past aliens (humanoid or not as easy for makeup or costuming and things) because as if a label of a species or animal can't but humans are stupid with how television has to be believable. How normal people think.
People that think properly can handle it, balance it. Sure we need confirmation to approve something among a group for a reason, even what words we speak or characters (language wise) we write. It's how it got so broad and normalised. What maths or concepts or whatever we approve as this is called a tv show or whatever. Isn't of a visual sound things or whatever instead.
I know it's possible. It's just people don't think, too many other things for them to think about or it's a tv show or other factors they have other things going on to deal with, but when people get big ideas sure it happens. They may or may not need to ground it. Ask a second opinion or go with it regardless.
Yeah yeah empty, yeah the war, yeah the last one, yeah the other stuff.
Just because too much time, too long to read or otherwise doesn't mean it's a factor just because it's hard to break down or not necessary for their lives.

It comes up every now and then, but the Doctor does work for UNIT, or at least did, and for a time in his 3rd incarnation he lived in exile on Earth in the mid to late 20th century, so he probably has a bank account, all he'd need to do is back to the future 2 it; either through gambling or the stock market, to make that account swell, and then he could just buy the house.
