im a big guy, and a food connoisseur, and i think I could add a lot to your channel, you you should come pick me up in chicago and we could go try cheap chicago food that I grew up on.
We're travelling in November to NYC for the first time and these videos feel like the Bible to us, we're studying so much! Thank you for your content!!!!
I love the arguments among New Yorkers about who has the best bagel and who has the best pizza. Somehow it’s like they are all right if you know what I mean. So many amazing options to fit all tastes. And most of them, even at their most average, are better than what we poor non-New Yorkers have to eat…gotta get back again to get my fix…
Big point about Ess-a-Bagel. First, they originally were across the street, but lost their lease. After that, they moved and the partners split. One owns only the 1st avenue location and the other owns the 3rd Avenue and all the other locations around the city. For my money, the 1st Avenue location, which I started eating at during lunch breaks from Stuyvesant High School, is by far the best. One place you don't have on here is Russ and Daughters which makes a heavenly cream cheese, lox and bagel.
Utopia Bagels still is the one bagel place I will try to go first the next time I'm in NYC. The bagels there literally look like heaven and the other bagel place that I also go to in New Jersey is Teaneck Road Hot Bagels.
Yay Greg!! Love when you guys collab! And the BAGELS 🥯 😮 my daughters wedding is this fall but after that all my money is going towards my EPIC NYC FOOD TOUR!!!
I’ve been to all those places, and they are all excellent. However, I was so flabbergasted and how great the bagels were at H&H on the upper east. I thought it was just a tourist rip off, but they were excellent.
Big shout out and love to you bro. Been watching lots of ur videos ahead of a trip to NYC, made my trip awesome ❤ Had a bagel at BTS on W40th street, everything bagel with cream cheese, salmon, tomatoe, capers - amazing 👌🏽
Jon My favorite bagel places is La Bagel Delight. 7ave and President st in Park Slope. I eat there every day. My name is in shrine with the Rangers logo.
@HereBeBarr Another spot is Emmons Bagels. They are on Emmons Ave and Dooley st in Sheepshead Bay. Right across the street from the Boats. Since I live in Sheepshead Bay and go fishing they are convenient.
where I live in the south, there’s only one place that ever had a line. It was a New York style sandwich shop. They sliced everything fresh to order. It was so good and unfortunately they closed. I miss jersey.
3 more weeks until my first NYC bagel. Thanks to you I feel like this trip will be a blast. PS: as we're visiting from Belgium, we'd love to see you try out the Belgian eating places in NYC.
As an Australian who has NEVER had a real bagel, these look mind blowing to me. I hope to make it to the USA one day, and if I do these are on my to-do list.
Russ & Daughters is my favorite. I also went to Brooklyn Bagel & Coffee company which were the big fluffy bagels like Ess a Bagels. Those were great too.
My son grew up on the original Ess A Bagel when we lived there. When he was teething, he teethed on their bagel. I was in a culture shock being introduced to their bagels. I grew up when bagels were smaller. Crisp on the outside. They were soft and fresh in the morning and hard as rocks by sundown.
I grew up in Alphabet City, and I remember bagels back then were like the first two places you went to. Later I was in LA in the 70s - my bagel was like a pillow and I got a half pound of cream cheese - like Ess-a-bagel.
i'm not really a bagel fan but new york has a lot of bagel shops i could try some it's all about varieties so i could find a shop i think i might like.
I grew up on bagels in NY and even been to some of the Bagel shops mentioned here. What I did not hear is how you tell a really good bagel from just a bagel. First - you will never get a great bagel if they do not make them on the premises. You are just wasting your money. Second - If the shop makes all the bagel early morning before they open then you are missing out the Navona experience. A really good bagel fresh out of the oven and still warm or hot does not need anything on it. Just the texture, warmth and flavor of the bagel should be enough to send your experience to heaven. Third - What to look for in a bagel? The crust should be thin and crips. If not it is not freshly made.. The inside should be warm, moist and dense. but not chewy like dowy. Forth Toppings - Whatever your preference is; poppy, sesame, salt, garlic, everything, etc... there should be enough on the top of the bagel to cover it. Where I grew up there were about a half dozen bagel shops to choose from and every morning they made their bagels fresh as they sold them. Often which bagels we bought more of depended on which one just came out of the ovens., We would first get hand carved lox from the Deli next door and then the bagels. On the way home we all would eat at least 1 bagel while they were still hot. At home we would then make out bagel sandwiches with lox, slice of onion, etc... We never toasted them. You only toast a bagel that is not fresh out of the oven. Sadly few places that sell bagels don't operate the way they have in the past. and that is sad. It is harder to find a good bagel place if you don't live right by one. There are 3 around where I live and they just are not that good. All their bagels are made in advance and none I would say are traditional. They are bigger , lighter and not a real bagel.
I’m an Orthodox Jew who keeps kosher, and I’m originally from Brooklyn. When I moved to New Jersey, and found out that to some people in my synagogue, the definition of a good bagel here is one from the grocery store, I almost had a fit. Luckily, there are 2 incredible kosher bagel stores within an hour’s drive from where I live now, both owned by non Jews and both have been open for more than 50 years. And yes, it’s worth the hour drive.
@@HereBeBarr absolutely. In my experience in brooklyn all kosher bagel stores were run by Jewish people, so the concept of non Jews opening up bagel stores that specifically wanted to be kosher was a revelation. Not that non Jews make bagels. That doesn’t surprise me of course. In New York there are hundreds of those.
@@arimermelstein9167Ari, one question! If bagel place which is run by non Jews is trying to be kosher, what about mashgeach supposed to be on premises all the time?
@@homerb3368 no, because all they make there is bagels and muffins. The mashgiach comes every so often to make sure that the ingredients they use haven’t changed (and I assume if they add a new product, they talk to him/her first). And bagel and pizza stores never shut their ovens, so assuming a Jewish person turning on the fire is enough, that happened (and happens if it needs to be refired). If they did any real cooking, then it would be a problem. But baking without a mashgiach is allowed.
ny may have good bagels, but the hot bagel bakery here in oakhurst, nj are superb! it was the one thing i missed the most when i went to college. they don't do any fancy sandwiches with eggs or anything. just spreads and lox. i love a good one with nothing on it or a hot one with butter that's melted in. once in a while, i'll even go for one with cream cheese.
I ate at Tompkin's Square Bagels on a Friday morning during my holiday in NYC two weeks ago. The bagels were good. However, I was not impressed by their selection of vegan cream cheese. IMHO, the best bagels in NYC are made by the Bagel Hole in Park Slope Brooklyn.
Have you compare NJ bagels to NY bagels? Lots of good bagel shops in NJ towns mostly in Bergen County. I have a go to bagel shop right next to work in Paramus. Freshly made from the oven.
@adambuesser6264You are close to one of the best bagels in NJ , the place in Fair Lawn on Saddle River Road called Hot Bagels (at the end of Morlot Ave).
I've always wanted to consume bagels. They're just not a thing here in my country. Apart from New York, I guess Canada has some pretty decent bagels to showcase.
Absolutely. For most of my life Montreal bagels were my standard. I much prefer NY bagels now but can enjoy both for sure. Just need to approach them differently. Don’t compare them, just eat them and love them on their own terms.
Hi John and Greg, I want to try Absolute bagel, thompkins square, and Ess a bagel (Stuyvesant town) location. The bagels 🥯 shipped to Florida lol 😆 😂. All of these locations look good. 🥯🥯🥯🥯🥯🥯🧀🧀🧀🧀🍪🎂🧋 Thai ice tea looks good. 🇹🇭🍵
When I went to NY this February I had a list of bagel places :) tried them, they were very good. Yet I felt that I was a bit "disappointed". I didn't know why...then I came back home, to Poland and I realized I have amazing bagels at home heheheh. I guess I expected too much from a "poor" bagel ;) And I made myself one at home. Still I really enjoyed trying many of them and got some inspiration how to prepare mine here :)

Being a celiac, I can only enjoy bagels vicariously through your video! But, your enjoyment makes it a fun experience!
My wife has Celiac and I will be visiting Modern Bread and Bagel and bringing her back what I hope to be a fantastic treat for her.
I have tried all gluten free bread and bagels…..trader Joe makes the best GF sliced bread. I have not found a great gf bagel

My first trip to NY is week ahead and since my hotel is half block away I'll probably end up in Ess-a-Bagel
Went in june to Absolute because of your previous video... What a fantastic place! The nova is GOOOOOD!

You guys should try Highway Bagels by Kings Highway in Brooklyn.
You had me at Everything Bagel. Miss those.
Went too Absolute Bagels from the Netherlands and the Bagels tasted realy good. Good luke you all.
If I was visiting on a tight schedule and a local took me to the hipster bagel place- I would start to cry!

Greg's excitement at 1:44 made me chuckle.
Nice!! Utopia was actually on my original itinerary. Bagels are a Tri-State classic, but NYC nails it!
Hell yeah

Utopia bagels especially looks delicious!
Love your content. I live near Galveston TX, went to a nearby bar and they were playing your videos on their huge tv. It was awesome.
Wow cool!
Just went today. Had an avocado, chipotle cc multi-grain bagel with sun-dried tomatoes. Divine.
Those are pretty awesome looking bagels. Cheers, Jon! 👍🏻👍🏻✌️
My wife and I and a couple of our friends are heading to NYC next month. I’m craving a good bacon, egg and cheese bagel.
I love the first one you had at Utopia with all the crunch 👌…and I love stores that use cash only like Absolute Bagels….woohoo ❤

Excellent list! Thanks HBB👍🏽
U have to try Jk bakery on union street in flushing Ny. Only grab their bagels at 7-8am when they first open and you’ll see why!
toasted plain bagel with butter is perfect. No place like NY to get a bagel. The rest of the country is missing out
As an Australian who has NEVER had a real bagel, these look mind blowing to me. I hope to make it to the USA one day, and if I do these are on my to-do list.
Bagels are from Poland not usa
Cool. Good to know. I've never had one from Poland either 😉. To be fair, I never said they originated in the USA.
@@spun_01 my problem is that Americans make it sounds like they invented it, truth is that the pioniers brought al the food they eat today.

Bagels and pizza in NYC are insane , ofcourse cuz of the water filter system they have but man its crazy (south jersey guy)
