- Manchester United struggled up against a much fitter Rosenborg side to begin their pre-season and it would have been much worse than 1-0 if not for an impressive performance by Radek Vitek.
Here's my thoughts on the game overall and any important talking points worth discussing.

Well...at least they got minutes in their legs? Am I right? Suffice to say that was a tough start to pre-season I think.
It's the first pre-season friendly-why's everyone flipping out? Winning or losing doesn't matter right now. These games are all about getting the players off the couch and back in shape after their vacation mode. ETH uses these matches as his mad scientist lab, trying out weird formations, tactics, and mixing up player combos like he's making a football smoothie.
It's the perfect time to throw new signings into the mix and see if they play nice with the rest of the squad, and help everyone remember which way they're supposed to kick the ball. If you're here, you should know this! The result is as relevant as last year's Christmas decorations.
But every single season, we see the same old knee-jerk reactions from "fans." Comments about another roller coaster season are already popping up. If you think one summer transfer window is going to magically fix the mess Manchester United's been in for over a decade, you might need a reality check. It'll probably take another three summer windows, at least, to turn this ship around. So, chill out and enjoy the process!

Collyer looked a worthy captain in that second half. I paid extra attention to him and he was constantly in the right position defensively, constantly coaching his teammates and did the simple stuff right.
The problem is that Rosenborg played with many academy players, so they did not top the team before or during the match. No excuses please.

@@nickyn4076 Let's wait and see some more performances before we start comparing players. They also play different positions, so comparing them to each other doesn't make much sense to me.
@@lucasvanwijngaarden670 Zinedine Zidane played a different position to Carlton Palmer but i can compare the two players rather easily - Zidane was better than Palmer.

Fair enough, but the PL is way, way tougher than the Norwegian League. And so does any player in the PL treat United-players during regular games... Yeah, the tackle on Casemiro was a red, no doubt, but could he move his legs a tad slower? Too much Brazilian Beef Picadillo and beer. Time to cash out.

@@justinwillness3162 training and playing matches aren't same, I hope you know that?. One team is currently in their mid season and the other is preseason. If you watched the match you would've noticed the clear difference.

this is about seeing players that wouldn't usually get to work with Erik, maybe he learned something from this game about some of these players, if yes, it's fulfilled it's purpose

I think we still look as clueless as we did last season. Several times when Vitex passed the ball to Amass, no options for him to play forward, he always had to pass back. We have still not figured out how to play the ball from the back to the oppositions final 3rd. We are still very open, teams can easily play from their box to our. Cut back was a staple against United last season. Still seeing traces of it. I love and support Eric Ten hag. But, we should be improving our play and avoiding mistakes from the past. It’s only the beginning I remain hopeful for the Season. But please let’s not have a repeat of last seasons football, it was traumatic.
What we witnessed was that Casemiro and Wan Bissaka have already left in their heads, and Rashford is hungry and up for it.

Worried for Rashford he was awful again in the first half - I had high hopes for him after he missed out on the Euros - thought he would be on it and up for it.
Harry amas,vitek,and Mason mount were sharper than their teammates.

No club ever rotates their goalkeepers. We could offer him to play in the early stages of the FA cup, but then what do we do with Bayindir?

In my opnion McTominay is great for squad rotation or tp force something, great character to have in the squad aswell
Casemiro + Hannibal especially have to go, nowhere near good enough. As for Maguire and Lindelöf, we should deffo be looking to offload Victor and only sell Maguire if we’ve got enough cover, otherwise keep him. As for McTominay, imo he’s a must keep, great squad player and option off the bench.

Hopefully, we improve as tactically it looked the same as last year and pretty much a mess, whichever players were out there. I thought there were still holes everywhere and too may aimless long balls into isolated front players.
Your comment that included McTominay leaving. This guy is head and shoulders, as a player above Rashford, McGuire, Cassemiro, Sancho, Mount, Anthony. Amazing that someone who sprouts his views on TH-cam doesn’t have a better understanding.

Collyer is the only youth player where ten Hag joined the signing session other the Garnacho and Mainoo. He knows what he has got to give
It's just a preseason game. First game with a squad that isn't going to start the season. Who cares what the score is. I'm more interested in the younger players getting game time.

It's the fact that it's identical to every game last season in that whichever team united plays against seems to batter them . Not just beat them . Batter them regardless of line up .

The youth players did not have enough energy for me, that's very worrying for me. I didn't expect much from the senior players because I do not expect none of the seniors to be starters. Toby needs to get his physicality and energy up. He has some quality but he needs to get in shape.
Vitek was excellent, Collyer-Oyedele double pivot and Ethan Ennis were OK too. The rest looked rusty. Mount was best of the senior players. 4-4-2 out of possession seems the way.
Banner,Ennis ,Amass ,collier and Vitek were good in my view

Guys chill out! Remember ten hags first preseason, where we defeated Liverpool 4 nil and I think we also won some trophy in Thailand! Then all of a sudden we lose the first 2 PL matches! So I would say, don't take this so seriously! Its probably all experiments!

The loss is not what bothers me i know first game and fitness an all but i still see the same issues on build up and pattern of play we just picked up were we left off last season sloppy. Casemiro and Hannibal are done men that was shocking performance from senior players

Was always gonna be a tough game. The lack of fitness was clear for all to see. A couple of youngsters stood out Vitek, Collyer, Amass, Ennis did well. Tbf tho Rosenberg are midway through their season & pretty much resorted to dirty tactics. I mean some of the fouls were so cynical u wouldn't think they were playing a friendly.
I mean the ref seemed to be blind but other than that nice to see the boy play

Zirkzee and Hojlund don't play the same position. Zirkzee is more likely to compete with Bruno and Mount for the most advanced midfield position, almost like a 10 or a false 9.

I like what i see from vtek. He ateast is a worthy number 2 already imo. As for toby he did an okay job. As for the system, i cant really coment about it since its the first game.
But if i can, i want to see something like 4-2-5 (gk as cb) shape on the ball n i think thats what eth is aiming. My only concern is the rb becoming rcb bc tbh our rb is not kyle walker or ben white. I prefer the rb n lb to invert becoming a double pivot, cdm go down to cb, the 2 cb become fullback

Youngsters need more work. I dont fancy the left to right back passing all the time. No use of the midfield at all. Still cant break down the low block. We need players that are comfortable on the ball amd not afraid to attack opponents defence. The system needs to be where our wingers can go forward and overlap alot more. Lets see how it goes though.

It's literally their first game, they've had a week of training with the new coaches, most of the team were youngsters and no one is match fit yet. Plus Rosenborg are halfway through their season and at full fitness.
