    I currently train in Shotokan but did Wing Chun for 5yrs before, I see Wing Chun principles here. Great stuff. I am not one of these people who claim that one art is better than another, it's down to the man

      100%! I actually did a bit of Wing Chun as well (not as much as you). And I find it highly effective against "hard styles" in certain situations.

    It's nice to see other karate styles using small, practical blocks in the manner you're demonstrating. Our style (a combo of Uechi and Goju) has a unique set of small, open-handed blocks/parries that were derived right from kumite. Reverse-engineered, if you will. Good stuff and I like the approach of building up your skill incrementally.

    What you said about not reaching says a lot about the need to question and challenge traditional training, e.g., the Karate high-block.

    • @roykilling2496
      @roykilling2496 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I don't see the karate high block as reaching. The arm has to reach a height that's past the top of the head or the block falls short. And, at least in most styles I've seen, it's not thrown more than a couple inches in front of the head. The tricky part of that block is the large arm movement required to execute it and the issue of it being able to get there in time.

    Some ignorant people claim that karate do not block well/cover their head during kumite because they do not block like boxers. Blocking like a boxer in a real fight without gloves on will actually get you wounded. I’m not saying one is better.. I’m just they both have their theories. One blocking style favours sport fighting and the other favours self defence. In karate hands and feet are considered weapons

    THANKS A LOT for these great drills. They remind me too of WingChun. Indeed there seem to be a whole lot of WC principles in Karate. BUT in contrast to WC these seem to be taught to higher degrees only. (In my experience at least.) Deplorable loss of time in my eyes and in respect to self defense maybe even dangerous. Another point why I like this video is that it stresses the importance of a partner. In Karate I see about 90% solo drills during lessons with lower grades. Here too, I think there's room for improvement in the rather traditional way of teaching. Luckily nowadays there are videos for the interested.
    I am really interested if you have experienced other ways of teaching and what you think of the two points I commented on. Kind regards Oss.

      GREAT COMMENT!
      I totally agree that many techniques are often held back too long in teaching. When I teach, I show these techniques to all ranks and everyone works with a partner in just about every class. With that said I explain that, due to how much Karate covers, it is important to be comfortable with the basics before doing the other techniques. For instance, the WingChun block I show leaves you more susceptible to a counter punch than some other blocks but it is sometimes necessary.
      I like to explain that when learning Basic Karate a student should "follow the rules" before going more advanced the same way someone learning to drive should not learn from how a NASCAR driver performs. We can consider beginner karate like Drivers Ed to a certain extent, in that learning the advanced material could leave them in more danger than sticking to the basics. They should also know that in an emergency, it might be necessary to "break the rules". You wouldn't expect a NASCAR driver to use a turn signal when they turn left but for a normal driver, this could be very dangerous. You might see an advanced belt leaving an opening so that they can bait the opponent, while this could be disastrous for a white belt. Again, the underbelt should know that the concept exists but also why they might not want to rely on it quite yet.
      I hope this makes sense. Let me know if you have any other questions!

    • @ur939
      @ur939 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@KaratePlaybook Thank you very much for your detailed answer. I thoroughly agree with what you say about learning how to "drive". And now that I read how you do your lessons, maybe I should consider looking for another Dojo for a change.
      Have a nice weekend. Oss U

    I just learned you have boxing experience. With that being said, I absolutely love karate, but I've been concerned about how to block a hook applied in boxing with a technique other than just covering. Is this something talked about in the world is karate at all?

    • @KaratePlaybook
      @KaratePlaybook  4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Another great question Stan!
      Other than covering I often used something that resembled the fist motion of Heian Nidan. As the hook comes in (lets say to my left side), my left arm would lift up and push against it as my right fired to an opening, I was partial to a hook to the ribs. I also used a lot of body and head movement (trained a ton in karate) to simply avoid the attack, whether it was moving straight back, bob/weaving under or angling off. We actually have hook punch quite a bit in traditional karate, unfortunately it is often neglected in the teaching. Kata Examples: Empi, Jion, Heian Godan (although that one is performed slowly so it might not look like it at first), Tekki Katas and more.

    Rising block is really not a block. It is an attack in karate blocks turn into strikes.
