    • @veritasnon
      @veritasnon 4 ปีที่แล้ว +43

      The England character is looking with disdain at the in-universe camera guy because they're glorifying a mentally ill villain and also taping him super close up.
      The fourth wall isn't established until the movie switches out of the documentary style and into third person.
      Basically, it kinda comes across like Freddy is staring at the audience but I wouldn't call it a fourth wall break since he's looking at a camera that exists in the movie.

    I’ve always wanted a horror satire making fun of all those fangirls that idolize and have crushes on horror movie villains and seeing what would actually happen if they were dropped in a real situation like that. But this is close enough to the idea.

    • @nicholaspeters9919
      @nicholaspeters9919 4 ปีที่แล้ว +58

      The real trick would be making the slasher’s reaction to the fangirls in character while also making it funny. You could just have them kill the fans, but that would be much too abrupt and the movie is over.

      Wow, I was waiting for a comment like this to come up. It’s always a trip to see that there are people that love these kind of slashers (romantically and sexually I guess) . Though, I think for some they have an idea of knowing it’s fiction at the end of the day, and the idea of indulging in fantasies is just a typical fan thing for them. But to explore that phenomenon in a horror movie would be great in seeing the psychological aspect of it and how consuming dark content like that, since there is a debate on the whole fiction=/=reality.

    I love what you had to say about tropes and convention at the end of this video.
    I have gotten into arguments with fellow writers who try to say that your work has no value if it isn't completely original.
    Stories have been around as long as spoken language and there's a reason we still see the same tropes used throughout all of history to tell effective stories: it's because they work.
    No work is truly original. All art builds off of all of the art that came before it. And if you choose to ignore that then you are fundamentally crippling yourself and your ability to tell an effective story.
    Great video as always, looking forward to the next one!

    It's a perfect movie. The acting is so good. It has got that rob Zombie and sam raimi quality to it. Where it keeps its seriousness sincere but never downplays the humor and charm of focusing on a psycho killer. The credits scene is so seat gripping even though you know what's gonna happen.

    I wish someone would just make a decent slasher movie again. Not a deconstruction, not a remake, not some cheap knockoff dumped onto Amazon Prime, just a good ol' fashioned slasher movie like you'd see in the 70's, 80's, and 90's.

    Actually never herd of it, but was pleasantly surprised, it's a really good movie overall. I was immediately reminded of a nineties belgian movie Man Bites Dog, also quite good. It doesn't explore any slasher tropes, but it's about a film crew following a charismatic serial killer and explores the life of a "real" serial killer and violence in our lives.

    The "twist" in this movie is so glaringly obvious very early on in the movie to the point that it would have been a better film without it. For me this movie failed as a mockumentary. At no point while watching this did I feel like I was watching a real documentary, it all felt incredibly staged. The final half hour or so is a very weak slasher film. It is too bad because the concept is actually interesting but the execution was so poor that I was not able to find much enjoyment in the film as a whole.

    • @arthurfisher1857
      @arthurfisher1857 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Couldn't disagree more.
      Except the part about the last half hour being a pretty weak slasher film... that section needed a few tweaks.

    Just watched this and I hate it! It talks about all the tropes of horror movies and then expects you to buy into those same tropes when it pulls them with no variation. Completely adequate, but unenjoyable to me.
    *edit:* I also really hate how it calls out horror for its porny voyeurism but later still takes two panty shots and hangs on the main’s butt.

    This movie had me cracking up when I saw it, and surprised that it’s not more talked about. It’s probably due to a general aversion to/ saturation of “found footage/ mockumentary” style flicks, respectively. This is definitely a hidden gem, though.

    Man, 2006 was best year ever, that and 2007 and 2008. Didn’t know it back then but they were the best years of my life for movies, games, girls.

    I gave it a 7/10 because a few of the scenes were just too goofy for me, and some of the acting also felt wooden, like in a B-movie (whether if that's the intended effect or not). Regardless, I respect it enough as a love letter to the slasher genre, hence the 7.

    Fun tidbit, the larger man known as Todd within the film I believe is with a special effects studio named toetag. He starred in the found footage film trilogy , "August Underground", the most famous being the second film "August Underground Mordum". It's a heavy film... plot isn't deep, and is mainly for depravity sake. But it's something.

    Ryan, have you seen the Belgian movie 'Man Bites Dog', from 1992? Very similar concept in that it sees a film crew following a serial killer as he goes about his, erm... calling. It's another black comedy and well worth a watch. This movie also sounds excellent and I'll definitely make an effort to look it out, thanks!
