This song really needs to be seen live. Check out the Live From Long Island version. Stunning playing.

Live! You have to see Billy rule the piano live. Try "Live From USSR". He was first rock act invited to play in Soviet USSR before regime fell to become Russia. 😊 Plus, seeing Liberty Devito on drums is a life changing experience! No joke. Tightest band ever. 🤯

👍, but Liberty DeVito's drumming should be seen live.

What magic is created by Liberty DeVitto's drumming! His machine-gun percussion on the live version of "Miami 2017" shouldn't be missed.

My dad always bought the latest Billy Joel vinyl as I was growing up, so I know these songs by heart! The late 70's, early 80's Billy was the best!

Billy has a great hit song titled "Downeaster Alexa" which is named after his daughter.

One of my personal favourite Billy Joel tunes. This just shows his piano talent at his highest level… it’s so effortless.

What a treat! After hearing a thousand reactors do "Piano Man," my silent reaction to them is, "You ain't heard nothin' yet." Some other blow-your-mind Joel compositions are "Root Beer Rag," "Ballad of Billy the Kid," and "Travelin' Prayer." Really enjoyed! :)

Prelude is Billy's warm up for his concerts to bring the energy up as he begins. He's also said the angry young man was a vet that he liked to hire as part of his road crew, but the guy had trouble communicating and kept making issues. Eventually Billy had to stop hiring him, and the guy took it hard.

“I once believed in causes, too
I had my pointless point of view
And life went on no matter who was wrong or right”
In our society today, we really need to get back to living that line.
This song was written in 1976 about his then stage manager. According to Billy, the gentleman was exactly how he described in the song. Very black and white, right or wrong, my way or the highway, you’re entitled to your opinion but it’s wrong. He would always tout his accomplishments (the line about the medals).

Billy's father was a classical pianist who left when Billy was a child. Billy studied classical piano as well and obviously has his father's gift!! He is an incredible pianist,,,,,

That's Billy on the piano. The man with the flying fingers! He's a great songwriter and has so many hits. You can watch him play it live in 1976 here: th-cam.com/video/BgyyFmDZrFA/w-d-xo.htmlsi=Ydoukt363FBS9QxE

This used to be how he opened his concerts, but he admitted he just can’t do it any more. I liked the song, but once I saw it live with the lights, I LOVE the song!
If you can find a new-ish live video, check it out.
    Cheers!

@@richeaton5752 I think that’s the one. From the late 90’s/early 2000’s. Or it may have been the Yankee Stadium show. I know it’s not the Shea Stadium version. That was good, but I think it was early/mid 80’s.

Saw him open the dueling piano's tour with Elton John with this at Ohio Stadium in 1994! To this day still one of my favorite live shows of the several hundred I've seen in my life.

He also doesn’t use a traditional piano anymore and said the key action isn’t the same for playing this song either.

Mr Joel has a way with words and telling stories with the best of them. You really want to add "We Didn't Start The Fire" to his playlist, one of his best.

I've seen him perform this live, so yes, that's really Billy playing piano. I don't think it's about a veteran, I think the medals and awards are imagined and the battles are not military.

Great song, great singer-songwriter, great piano player! Check out Root Beer Rag from his Streetlife Serenade album, 1974! It’s a fun song that shows off his formidable piano skills! ✌️

Worth finding a live version. When I saw him in Chicago he laid down on the bench and played the fast part over his head, upside-down. The man is a keyboard demon. And your analysis was eye-opening. I never thought about the AYM as someone with PTSD that came before he got angry. You've got some great thoughts up there! Keep 'em comin'!

Written about someone Billy knew and tried to help by giving him a job, but his disposition made him impossible to work with so Billy had to let him go. Thanks for the great reaction to my favorite artist. Would love to hear more Billy Joel reactions from you.

While this is not one of my favorites due, I think to overly crowded verbage, Billy Joel has always been such a prolific musician and writer/lyricist. All the rest of the musicianship is brilliant as well of course.
And I've always sensed a lot of Broadway influences in Joel's musical style.
