- Welcome to our first time watching Die Hard (1988).
Classic Action Film, but how does it stand today?
Wow, watching this from beginning to end without any distractions was totally worth it! Yes to Bruce, yes to Alan, yes to the action, and yes yes yes to the Script! Written by Jeb Stuart and Steven E. de Souza, Directed by John McTiernan and starring Bruce Willis and Alan Rickman.
Has it dated? Not at all, the stunts are real and in-camera so they still impress, and the script is better than many modern action films - still! What a great hello for Bruce Willis and Alan Rickman. It's simple awesome.

We hope you enjoy this Reaction Video. Spoiler alert - we loved it! It is still one of the best action films ever made! Great quality filmmaking, amazing protagonist and antagonist, but also has heart - all down to the excellent script! We will leave the debate on whether it's Christmas film or not for the comments! But did anyone else spot the significance of the gold watch ? Apart from famous line, our favourite was "Listen fast. This is a party line, and the neighbour's got itchy trigger fingers."
It seems plausible that Karl could have spun out of the chain, and it appeared he was only like 10 Maybe 15 feet max off the ground. He had a hand inside the chain to help relieve some of the pressure.
GREAT REACTION! So happy when the lad said "SNAPE" and of course when he approved. He got you on SMG for sure. That was funny. This reaction reminded me of the time when my dad played PINK FLOYD for me for the first time. yes! its a Christmas movie.... because in America, from 1989- 2005 at least, every local tv station would run Die Hard and Leathal Weapon on Christmas Day. It got so popular that almost every station started to run it on Christmas so you could always drop back into it on another channel whatever the situation. There isn't an American over 40 that hasn't been to a family Holiday at someones house where if you walked down into their basement, you would find a few cousins and uncles huddled around the tv watching this while trying to avoid the family. I cant wait for the next two:) Looking forward to an eventual LEATHAL WEAPON, that leads into MAD MAX, that leads into BRAVEHEART!
Always love seeing a reaction video with you guy's. Plenty of Die Hard movies I think you's would enjoy reaction on them. Also Speed 2: Cruise Control.
What do you mean the significance of the gold watch? That it was the reason for the snag, and that it almost got her killed?
@@oaktree1628 As well as the objective arc which for John is to stop the terrorists, he has the subjective arc which is his marital problem. This is why he is in LA to begin with. Holly is using her maiden name and came to LA for the work opportunity and placed this as a higher priority than their marriage. Near the beginning, Ellis says to John that Holly should show him her watch, being gold and Rolex as a token of her working for the company. At the end, Hans dangles for his life holding onto her by the wrist. John unshackles the watch and Hans falls. In this one action, he completes his objective in stopping the terrorists and also he solves his original problem of his marriage with symbolism as he unshackles his wife from the company, because she says she is now Holly 'McClane'.
Damn Alan Rickman is so amazing. RIP brother
@@moon-moth1😢 Is so sad
"I must have missed sixty minutes" .... to me that single line rings not just humor but intent. Rickman can play a predator very well.
I absolutely love your sons sweet nature and his calm assessment of the more difficult scenes.
"He's going to have to go to hospital."
@@GenerationMediaReaction I laughed out loud at that (quite sensible) comment too.
A little violence and sweary ..
“That’s Fine!”😂👍
100 % one of the best Christmas movies of all time. Anyone who says its not is beyond help
It is.
Bruce Willis himself had said it on his comedy central roast just two years ago.
100 percent agree.
@Joanna.From.Canada Depends on how narrow minded somebody is when it comes to assessing the merits of a film regarding the genre its made for. It's widely accepted that Die Hard is a christmas movie except for a small number of people who seem to cling to the belief that christmas movies have to have a rigid formula.
@Joanna.From.Canada and that's exactly what I was just saying. If you are only going to accept the rigid formula then you won't accept its a Christmas movie. There are actually far more references to christmas in Die Hard than there are in Its a wonderful life , and that film references suicide !!
My all time favourite Christmas movie
You will also LOVE Galaxy Quest with Alan Rickman. It is a comedy that is based on the Star Trek series. It is like a love letter to S.T.
I'm loving you guys dressing up as the characters so fun!!!
Such a classic action film, Alan Rickman steals the show, if you haven't seen Robin Hood Prince Of Theives I highly recommend it, Kevin Costner and Alan Rickman along with Morgan Freeman, it's really good.
The 3rd Die Hard movie is my favorite it's a close tie with this one
During this reaction, we remember the Robin Hood film actually! It's on the list!
I question how much cost or how big wardrobe is to be able to do for each film
@@mlee6050 Haha, we only do it if we have things around the house
I'm a big fan of Die Hard with a Vengeance too, as a NYer certain parts make me tear up every time I watch it
I do recommend 3rd Die Hard too.
Best Christmas movie ever, that is all...
😎
better than Gremlins?
@@stevenjohnson243 I never did like Gremlins, gave me nightmares as a kid.
Not better than Family Man
Ah it's starting to feel like christmas ! :)
The director of "Speed", Jan de Bont, was the cinematographer on "Die Hard".
And he just done Black Rain and Basic Instinct for Michael Douglas. And he also directed Twister with Late Bill Paxton and Helen Hunt.
Just so you know on Jan De Bont Speed was his first directing action film for 20th century Studios.
Best action Christmas movie ever
Bruce Willis recently officially cleared that up saying it was indeed a Christmas film. 😂
Apparently he’s had some brain impairment lately so you can’t rely on that.
And? He just acted in the movie and he's not sane so to speak.
if Lando starts saying "Yippee Ki Yay MotherFather" you've got nobody to blame but yourself lol. Great reaction as always. I hope you guys at least finish the original trilogy
That terrified look Hans has when he falls is actual real terror..the actor was not told he was going to drop at that moment...
"Welcome to the party, pal!"
It isn't Christmas in my house until Hans Gruber is THROWN off the top of Nakatomi Plaza. 😎
Fun Fact: In 2007, Bruce Willis donated John McClane's undershirt to the Smithsonian Museum.
Making Lemonade Fact: The scene where McClane (Bruce Willis) falls down a shaft was a mistake by the stuntman, who was supposed to grab the first vent, as it originally was planned. He slipped and continued to fall, but the shot was used anyway; it was edited together with one where McClane grabs the next vent down as he falls.
When Worlds Collide Fact: The scene in which Gruber (Alan Rickman) and McClane (Bruce Willis) meet for the first time was inserted into the script after Alan Rickman was found to be proficient at mimicking American accents. The filmmakers had been looking for a way to have the two characters meet prior to the climax and capitalized on Rickman's talent.
Casting Notes Fact: Alan Rickman nearly passed up the role of Hans Gruber, which ended up being his first American film role. He had only arrived in Hollywood two days earlier and was appalled by the idea of his first role being the villain in an action film. To a degree, Rickman was right to be concerned considering his performance as Hans Gruber was so hailed that the actor had to struggle being typecast as a player of villains for much of his career.
Location Location Fact: The fictional Nakatomi Plaza is the headquarters of 20th Century Studios, so the studio could use one of its own buildings and didn't have to hold back on stunts and action sequences. While Jeb Stuart was writing the screenplay, he did a tour of the building, and immediately incorporated some of the locations and objects he found there into his script as set pieces. The company charged itself rent for the use of the then-unfinished building. Some of the middle floors were occupied by legal and administrative departments, so only empty floors were used for filming. Still, the filming of scenes that involved gunfire had to be postponed until after hours because some of the employees from the active floors started to complain about the noise.
The officer is the father in "Family Matters," Reginald VelJohnson, who was was also a sergeant. Also the reaction on Alan Rickman's face was real. He was being held by a rope and told he would be released on the count of 3 but he was released on the count of 1.
Best way to celebrate Christmas in July.
55:39 Fun fact: The face that Alan Rickman is making when he falls is genuine. In the studio they had the blue screen equipment all set up, and Alan was hanging off the scaffold they set up for this shot, but he was really scared of heights and very nervous, and the director told him that they would pretend to drop him, and then get the shot of the fall with a stunt man, but they actually dropped him without telling him, so that's Alan thinking that something went wrong in real life and that he was really in danger. Of course they were over foam mats so he was fine, but he was still not expecting to really be dropped XD Great reaction, as always guys!
Your question at 21:08 - yes, that's Reginald VelJohnson, he was in Crocodile Dundee and also played Tom Hanks' partner in Turner and Hooch (that's a fun film to watch, made in 1990).
Yes He’s The Driver In “Crocodile Dundee”!! Good job !
Carl Winslow yes he was the driver in that film, but played the cop in this Susan. Reggie VelJohnson
If you play close attention when Karl gets choked by the chain he manages to slip his hands between the chain and his neck which keeps him from snapping his neck/hung when he hits the wall
Just because it's not snowing doesn't mean it's not a Christmas movie. The music and decorations were Christmas themed. He even wrote "now i have a machinegun ho-ho-ho."
It's snowing at the end, the bearer bind falling from the window represents the snow.
OK, this time I burst out laughing at your (spot-on) costuming. Great stuff, gents.
Thank you for dressing for us. Happy Christmas! 😅 I’m smiling soooo big. Looking forward ❤❤😂😂to
0:30 Supers costumes dédiés du film, excellent ! Ha ha ha !
Note that Die Hard's director of photography was Jan de Bont, who directed Speed. That's where the Pacific Courier connection comes in.
Cool man that you get to introduce your son to these movies . Otherwise he may never see these. I was living in Tokyo Japan when I first saw this film. I was in the military . They loved it over there because of the Nakatomi towers and the President of the company who’s Japanese. Great reaction guys. 👏👏😊🥰
did our young MAN not question the dirty wife beater before filming?? How did you get away with it? Tell him LOGAN makes it cool AF.......
BTW....you're a great dad. my dad was just like you. please keep making this content.....please. please. please
Thank you! We look around to see what clothes we have around the house. He doesn't question it when i tell him what to wear - adds to the fun! (cant do it for every film though)
In this movie there is no wasted scenes. The man in the airplane gives a reason for Willis to be barefoot. The children are introduced to give Hans a reason to suspect the connection. There is no filler. It is masterful
What about the boobies - in the beginning, and the Playboy centerfold?
Sharp kid you got there. I'm impressed.
The end of that intro though! 🤣🤣 The yippee ki-yay... pause... caught me totally off guard 😵🤣🤣
The first and third Die Hard films are the best.
Good reaction guys!!!
I'm really enjoying this channel. It feels like we're all watching your son's mind expand in real time. Not many kids his age will have the knowledge and appreciation he does for classic cinema. He's already ahead of the game.
I'd like to see you two react to The Sixth Sense. It's spooky but not too scary and it's a brilliant story worth reacting to.
thank you, we have Sixth Sense in mind, but might wait until halloween
We have Sixth Sense on the list, maybe we will do it for Halloween
Awesome reaction! Can't wait to see you guys reaction to Part 2
I love this channel. It reminds me of when I was introducing my two sons to the best of 70s, 80s, and 90s cinema. I only wish my sons and I had such charming English accents! :)
I just “got” that you are both dressed up. Brilliant!! 😂😮🎉
Great reaction! I still don't know what negotiable bearer bonds are, but love the way he says it.
love your outfits!!!!!! awesome.
Glad you like them!
I really enjoyed your reaction! Love that you dressed in theme. I havent seen this film in about 30 years but wow I forgot how great it was! Bruce Willis is amazing.
It's so good!
Stellar reaction , to a Stellar movie! ..PS, loved the clothing tribute! 😂❤✌️💯
Glad you enjoyed it
They said the look on Alan Rickmans ( misspelled)face wasn’t acting when he fell from the side of the building, they didn’t tell him how far down they were going to drop him, so the look of shock on his face was real !
No, I read that he had that real look of surprise because they said that he would be released at the count of 3, but they released him at 2.
Robin Hood Prince of Thieves.
Yes, yes please.
Great cast with Costner, Freeman, Rickman and Wincott, with an excellent movie soundtrack.
Just remembering the soundtrack reminded me of another one you both might enjoy, The Three Musketeers (1993) with Curry, Sheen, Sutherland, Wincott, Platt and O’Donnell.
The soundtrack includes one of my favorite songs All For Love by Sting, Adams and Stewart.
Aww this is nice. My Dad and I saw Die Hard together when it was first released when I was 9. Our generation has come full circle clearly.
Ah, it's my favourite Halloween movie!
lol JK
jokes aside, this was a fantastic reaction from you both, loved the cosplay, and enjoyed this watch-along, thank you both very much! Brilliant!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Hi guys Ian from Glasgow .enjoying your reactions.a brilliant movie one of the first I watched with Bruce Willis. You should watch red with Bruce Willis Helen mirren .
Thank you Ian
Props to the makeup department 😂 Great stuff lads 😂
Another great reaction!! I'm so glad kiddo loved it. It's an annual Christmas movie in my house.
It's not Christmas until Hans takes the drop in my house.
I agree with your moral flexibility on this film for a young man, sir.😂
Best line!!!! Come to the coast, we’ll get together, have a few laughs 😂😂😂😂😂
Yes, he was the driver in crocodile Dundee. The only time he has NOT played a cop, like Lorenzo in the sequel.
Just a suggestion. The movie Searching for Bobby Fisher. It's a fantastic film that unfortunately came out the same year as Jurassic Park, The Fugitive, The Firm, Sleepless in Seattle and Mrs Doubtfire. All big blockbuster movies so it was overshadowed and not noticed or given the attention it truly deserves. It's based on a true story and is a great example of redemption and true parental love. It's stars Ben Kingsley, and Laurence Fishbern. Along with other great actors especially the young boy who plays the real life character Josh Waitzkin , ( Max Pomeranc) who truly knocks it out of the park with his fantastic acting abilities . It's a very engaging and emotionally uplifting film.
Jeb Stuart is the writer of this and The Fugitive as well.
I STILL love how you guys "dress for the part". At first I though your son was "Onslow" (Geoffrey Hughes from "Keeping Up Appearances").....the "wife-beater shirt" (American term for that style of undershirt) was a hint. But then I remember Bruce Willis' shirt. It's so unfortunate that Bruce's health is very bad, severe frontotemporal dementia.
I saw this when it first came out and I was 10yrs old, that’s when I decided my favorite genre of movies was action!
Hello! Thank you for showing your son this action classic in two outstanding roles! And I must say right away - maybe you don't have plans except for the first two Christmas parts, but I would really like to see my son's reaction to part 4. It's not that bad, actually, it's a pretty solid movie, thank you in advance)
It's nice that you watch these films with your son. Back in the eighties, I had to sneak to the theater to see this movie and lie to my dad about what my friend and I saw. I had to tell him it was a rated PG movie. Conservative parents. Watch RAIN MAN.
He was the guy in Croc dundee, and he was the dad on Family matters (Steve Urkle) sitcom for years. He is in Die Hard 2 as well.
great actor!
the cosplay is great lol.
The scene with John and Hans pretending to be a hostage was added after the director heard how well Rickman could do an American accent.
Two of the "terrorists" survived. John knocked one out, and so did Argyle.
When Karl came back, they played an unused musical cue from the score of _Aliens._
My kids know Christmas season does not start until Hans Gruber falls. They're 29, 26 and 20.
The Guy with the long blonde hair, dressed in black that went up to the roof to get John ( Bruce Willis) he’s a very famous retired Russian Ballet dancer can’t remember his name I think first name is Alexander.
Love Die Hard but Lethal Weapon will always be my favorite.
Good reaction
Really enjoy the third in the series as well!!
Thanks!
Great reaction thx 🙇♂️
My fav Bruce Willis movie is " 16 Blocks" underated.
Hope someday we get to see some Denzel Washington movies on this ch like "Crimson Tide"
Looking forward to the next upload 🇬🇧🌟👍🏼😎
QUIGLEY DOWN UNDER is another brilliant Rickman villain
Can't enough of you two reacting. Air Force One with Harrison Ford would be good for you both. You and your son are very likeable. Predator was a great 80's action movie as well
The boy has not seen an Arnie film yet :-0
Great reaction you guys. I hope you guys continue with the series.
I've been thinking about films which captured my imagination at that age. You've already watched stand by me, there was also mosquito coast and green fried tomatoes at the whistle stop cafe. It would be interesting to see what the next generation feels about those films. I used to watch them on my 14" portable after hours and had the feeling that i was the only person ever to have seen the film. I also adored misery and Dolores Claiborne, but I'm not sure i should have been watching those.
Let the tradition begin!
I wish money wasn't so tight right now, because I would love to send you guys a couple of gamer chairs. Those awful things you're currently sitting on look like pure torture. 🤣🤣🤣
lol! maybe we will upgrade in the future. they only look uncomfortable because i have to slump down to my son's height for the camera!
Great Classic Action film! When your lad didn’t recognize Alan Rickman’s name my initial thought was “didn’t he watch Harry Potter?” 😂 He’s right can’t mistake that voice. I used to work at Nagatomi Building a.k.a Fox Plaza part of 21st Century Fox Studios. Whenever I see this movie I have flashbacks of my time there. lol Rupert Murdoch used to come in on a helicopter and land on the roof of the building when he came into town. Glad your son enjoyed it.
oh wow !
The SMG in question is a H&K MP5
when he has to sacrifice the gun he should’ve taken the magazine with the ammunition with him as well. the MP5 and the Beretta that he kept with him use the same ammunition
Not only was he the driver from the Harlem Warlords but also the dad on _Family Matters._
No, John didn't shoot at him! Once the body hit the car, the ruse was over so the bad guys started shooting. They couldn't pretend nothing was wrong anymore. (Look it up.) In dozens of reactions, yours is the first one I've ever seen who thought John was shooting at the cop car. 🥺
It's interesting as i was genuinely confused by this shooting. Had a look back, and when the body lands, and he reverses the car, there is gunfire immediately and the camera doesn't show who is firing. You're right, it must be the terrorists (later a shot shows it coming from a lower level), but in the moment, and since John was leading the action, it created a question in us.
25:06 It wasn't John who was shooting at the car but one of the terrorists using a different gun.
I must say this thumbnail is so brilliant that had to click
Die hard is also questionable if it's a Christmas movie or not
Bruce willis in this to Looper makes me go wow he been acting for so long
great costumes!
day man fighter of the night man, champion of the sun master of karate and friendship for everyone!
SMG is the correct term. Your lad has a it down pat.
Then if you loved this one the two of you will love the rest of them!! There’s at least two more!! Both as action packed as this one!!!
when i was 9 or 10 my dad bought me EVERY SINGLE COMIC AVAILABLE ....... read these and pick 5....i'll buy your top 5 forever but tell me why you like them? smart move.....i'm currently looking after my alzheimer's dad and proud to do it....... he is my hero, he is MY ALFRED.
22:20 It wasn't John shooting at him, I at one point in my life thought so too. But no, the thieves were shooting at him because now he knew something was up and they tried shooting him to prevent him from saying anything about it to anyone. And even though I thought the same thing once, John shooting at him would of been really risky, could of actually hit him, those bullets were close. You can see a thief with a gun was on a lower floor than most and was shooting at him, way lower than John was.
A Bruce Willis and Samuel L Jackson movie you'd really like is Unbreakable. Not much action, and slow-pace but it'll have you asking questions the whole time. It's part of a trilogy. Unbreakable, Split, and Glass
Love Unbreakable, not see the other two
@@GenerationMediaReaction Split is it's own movie, then Glass brings all the stories together. Glass only got average reviews but I liked it.
I don't know if you have ever watched the TV series Walker Texas Ranger, but if you do, the computer guy is in it
Did your son just get in from rebuilding his motorcycle engine? He's wearing the classic Marlon Brando T-shirt
You should watch The Six Sense
You guys should watch Die Hard 3 next. It's from the same director and it's just about as good as the original.
More than an action movie. It's a Christmas movie. 😊
Another Bruce Willis one is Armageddon!
Face Off reaction next. Another great action film.
Lucy McLane ended up in Fallout shelter number 33.
Loved this reaction. Another great 80s movie your son might like: Gremlins.
now THAT is a Christmas movie
I wish we hadn't seen Gremlins before starting this channel, it would have been a perfect choice
As a german its even funnier xD they really didnt learn german very well and it sounds so odd :D but its a great movie and it doesnt put you off even as a german you are still an the side of john mclane :D
Schieße den Fenster!!
The template for most video games
Another good Christmas movie is Gremlins.
It’s not Christmas until Hans falls from the 30th floor of Nakatomi.
Great reaction 🤩 Please react to the next four Die Hard Movies 👍
Die Hard is the best
Great reaction guys, i have a movie suggestion for you guys.
Elysium
