the first of 3 episodes post final shape is over. how did i feel about it? pretty much the same as i've felt about most seasons over the past 3 years: it hit all the marks. i don't think anything was egregiously bad, but i dunno how much over the top praise i could really give it either. it was another batch of content. i checked all the boxes. and then i kinda checked out.

As usual we succeeded in resetting everything to the status quo from the onset of the season
I could care less about those gays as well. Gayest story in Destiny history so far.
The problem was that the story went nowhere for 6 weeks of content and then ended by also going nowhere.
What changed with the characters from the start to the end of the season? Nothing. It all makes it feel pointless and meandering.

The only character development we got was Saint getting our saints memories similar to crow and uldren, Osiris seeing himself in mayas madness, and failsafe being a part of the helm (not sure if she will stay a part of the helm in future stories
Even worse is the butchering of failsafe. Instead of the two distinct voices and 2 personalities its just 1 personality that speaks different sometimes. Awful change that Im assuming is the consequence from layoffs of the writers
@@mutantraze3681 That was always going to be a problem because Failsafe's original story was vaulted so long ago, and New Light is frankly terrible at explaining what anything is. It was so unnecessary to ditch her missions too, because they still had Nessus; it wasn't like Titan or Io where they got rid of entire locations.

Who the hell goes out their way to do seasonal challenges? The most boring and pointless grind. Those are things you should unlock naturally by playing the game. If you sit down and treat it like a checklist, you’re doing it way wrong.

That's because it's an episode, like of a TV show, where the story will continue in another episode. Episodes format isn't like Seasons, unlike every TH-camr has got wrong and just thinks it's the same story telling format.

I also stopped after act 1. I did the exotic mission with my friends even though I knew I wouldn't get the gun myself since I hadn't reached that point in the story and I am fine with that.
All through Lightfall, we knew that Maya was the anomaly in the Vex Network. So why did they spend WEEKS trying to pretend nobody could figure out who "The Conductor" was? They straight up TOLD you. So either the Vanguard are idiots, or the Guardian just doesn't share any of the information you found.
Same. And my only regret is that failsafe was actually probably my favorite character in the game in several years so I didn’t actually really get to interact with them and whatnot. However the rest of the game was so uninteresting that it wasn’t enough
One of things thats getting annoying for me is Osiris and Saint’s relationship. Its been prevalent for the past couple years and i’m tired of it. Maybe focus on the Drifter, Eris, Mara, Crow, or Ikora. idc if their character developement is romantic in nature next episode but please just focus on other characters. Also make Failsafe the HELMs permanent AI
Honestly I'd kill to get some more peripheral attention on Drifter and Eris, especially because their relationship has never taken away from their personal narratives. They continue to grow and develop individually and their relationship changes and grows accordingly. It's way more organic and I wish Bungie would stop leaning so hard into Osiris and Saint. Also because Drifter and Eris have a history of giving us many big things to kill and not having annoyingly over-extended dialogue.

I liked it in this story specifically because they are very clearly drawing a parallel between how Maya went off the deep end and Osiris did not, given very similar circumstances. They spent the last little while getting us invested in their relationship and exploring it, then they used it as a counterpoint to the conflict with Maya and Chioma.

I really liked Season of the Haunted because it was a refreshing change of pace and a break from the status quo. Then it became the status quo. Seraph, Deep, and Witch were also technically relationship-oriented/trauma oriented seasons but because the relationships we focused on were new (Clovis+Rasputin+Ana+Elsie, Savathun+Xivu+Eris, and Sloane+Ahsa+Xivu) , it was still interesting. I never tuned out when these characters interacted. I looked forward to hearing them talk to each other. I found myself tuning out when Saint and Osiris interacted while standing over Saint's grave and i couldn't put my finger on why. I realize now thats its because I know their relationship already. They love each other. Weve known that for years. I get they were a parallel/foil to Maya and Chioma but Maya's repeated killing of her partner couldve been more impactful if we saw more of their past relationship/other simulated versions (emphasis on "saw" and not "read about.")
Im super locked in on any Eliksni content so im stoked for Revenant. There are a lot of character pairings that have had very little, if any, on-screen interactions (Variks+Spider, Spider+Eramis, Fikrul+Mithrax, Fikrul+Variks, Eido+Variks, etc.) so theres a chance for a lot of fresh and unseen interactions. So many it'd be hard to mess it up.
I feel like the seasonal stories for the last 2 years have been trauma dumping and relationship therapy. I hope Saint and Osiris get their exodus into space because I am so tired of listening to them.

@@Bransburkfr. I’m the biggest lore junkie ever and I turned dialogue off for the first time in my Decade+ of playing. The gay robot soap opera became grating very fast, and doesn’t fit in this game very well.

This is the first season that i gave up on. I couldn't even pull myself to finish Act 3. I'm at the point where I think im just done with Destiny. I'll just watch ppl play the new raids and stuff.

This is the first season I genuinely couldn't be bothered to finish the pass on. Just absolutely a bore.
The best thing about the season's story are the reddit posts making fun of it: i.e. Maya fishing for a godroll Chioma. Act 3 Should have had Clovis showing up, killing Maya: "SURPRISE, MOTHERFUCKERS" and disappearing with the Echo. I would have at least been entertained. The only saving grace is Failsafe. I got her pets bc she seemed to be happy with them. The exotic mission is some lazy shit. Why the fuck are there champs in Expert mode? Eager edge and grappled past all that tedious horseshit. Got to the end of the story and Bungie said run the mission one last time for dialog? Nah, I'm good.
People complaining about saint and osiris but that isnt the problem. The problem is the writing is awful. Nobody talks like a real person would. Nobody reacts like a real person would. It all sounds like turnbased dialogue that is just so disjointed and weird. Destiny has always had weird writing, but when they say the same stuff for multiple weeks on end it gets really annoying. There was so much repeated exposition this episode and that is why its annoying. It isnt the characters, its the way the story is being told. It sucks.
Enigma protocol is trash and definitely not under used but forced too much bullshit used.

I thought it was a 5.5/10. They write Maya in to suddenly think of herself as something greater than The Witness, but she took beatings that even Randal could tank. The redeeming factor at least came in the exotic mission, but I just found myself spacing out for the first story in a while because it's not even Maya proving that she is a valid threat. It's just her getting angry that no one understands her actions, not even her actual Chioma who doesn't care anymore.
Bungie really outdid themselves here, they somehow made a story more boring and pointless than Shadowkeep, Season of the Hunt, and many other failures

I will say killing the witness isn't because we are Uber super duper strong mf we had to like always exploit weaknesses and use stipulations to beat the witness.

I feel like the reason this season was lame had factors to do with coming out of the final shape, layoffs, maybe marathon being taken away dev time, and expanding on future content. I'm very hopeful for act 2 and 3 'especally' act 2 because the content sounds awesome. Act 1 when they pitched it sounded the least interesting and i was correct on how it turned out but im positive for the future

Don't be surprised when Fikrul rezs Amanda as a magic sparkly vampire queen next season. There has to be a kinetic glaive so i can stake vampires!!! I need Blade, Underworld and Army of Darkness feels in Revenant then Lovecraftian creatures in Heresy.
It was a season.
I liked the general story/narrative, but the execution was mixed at best. The duality of the lovers story with Saint/Osiris and Maya/Chioma was good and important but should have been equal at most with the story of the Vex themselves changing due to the Echo and Maya. At least part of Nessus should have changed permanently, and we should have seen new Vex units. Maya had terrifying aspects as a villain character wise which is good, but the lack if any real power display hurt the idea of her as threat. The ending was easily the worst ending we have had since either Defiance or Plunder.
And while I dug the exotic mission, I also thought they needed to change it up a lot more than they did to have us running it so many times. Even just switching the bosses out in the final version would have been a massive improvement.
I have one word for how this season (yes, season, not episode) made me feel about Destiny: apathy. I uninstalled the game and hid it in Steam and I have no intention on returning. This was Bungie’s chance to show players like me that were adamant that Final Shape would be their last piece of Destiny content that our outlook and opinion was shortsighted and they failed. It’s time for another game to bookmark 10 years of my life.

I really liked the story in terms of learning about the characters and stuff, but the actual stakes felt boring and tacked on. I like the idea of fewer, but more robust seasons, but Echoes did nothing to actually surprise me. Imagine fighting a subjugated Saint-14, or actually defeating and securing Maya's Echo. Instead we fight more Hydras.
The main problems that seasons had were that they removed story content at the end of the year and that they re-charged us for reskinned copy-paste content.
Bungie was starting to solve the second problem with the last couple seasons having interesting takes on the seasonal activities, but the first problem was still an issue.
It looks like Bungie is trying to address the first problem by making the seasons/episodes self containing, but that DOESNT SOLVE THE PROBLEM. It may help prevent the big dlc stories from relying on events that aren’t in the game anymore, but that was a problem with the big dlc, not one of the problems with the seasons/episodes.
Image if they kept the interesting landscape changes to Nessus and had a condensed single mission that had you quickly play through the story from this episode which would be here to stay.

The next couple episodes seem much more captivating. Fikrul literally has an army behind him in all the promo of both fallen and pyramid ships (plus, uh, freaking ice breaker returning) and Revenant seems to have more new gameplay mechanics like potion crafting. Heresy seems to be bringing a lot of core game refreshes along with new trials/IB loot and the Dreadnought which I think is what most people are looking forward to this year, along with the second dungeon. Hopefully there's 1 or 2 new strikes still coming this year, because I really dislike the idea of these particular battlegrounds entering the vanguard playlist.
Also, when is Ikora gonna get literally ANY type of character development? Hopefully next season involves the vanguard again for once. Zavala, Ikora, Crow. Fighting impossible odds with an innovative way that we win. Give me that. F*ck the love stories they have outlived their novelty for a LONG time.
I really can't understand the mentality of people excited about Ice Breaker returning. That gun was a busted piece of garbage in D1 that can only go 1 of 2 ways in D2, either be the same gun from D1 and be complete trash since it's perks aren't special in D2 or it gets a complete revamp and isn't actually Ice Breaker anymore in anything but appearance. Not to mention, how are people not sick of D1 exotics returning? It's fucking lazy. It was really cool at first to see some old fan favorites when it was just things like Hawkmoon or Gjallarhorn but now it's ridiculous and feels like it's done more for lack of creativity since it essentially allows one of their "new" exotic additions to just be an old gun, but also boring. I quit after TFS and honestly, the overabundance of reusing exotics was one of the reasons I started losing interest in the game anymore. Also, how can anyone honestly care about the story anymore. Unlike most MMOs which build their world in multiple ways to allow for transitions into other storylines once the big bad was taken care of, Destiny's ENTIRE world was built around fighting the Darkness and the Witness. Any of these new threats just feel small in comparison and just feel like asspulls cuz the game needs new baddies.
I'm sick of Saint & Osiris being in every single fucking season.
Act 1: We have to figure out who's the villain (pretty easy to figure out if you read Veil Containment)
Act 2: We have to stop Maya from achieving her goal (which is both the Vex's and the Witness' only just tailored to her vision.)
Act 3: We 'stop' Maya, but she fades into the radiolaria saying she'll be back.
My biggest gripe was that nothing really happened. Nessus didn't change, the Vex could be forever changed, but it looks like they might just revert to original tactics. Relationships didn't change or evolve except maybe Saint and himself.
I didnt finish the main story questline. I have never done that, even at the lowest points of the game's lifecycle. I just have complete apathy to any non mission-critical story beats post Final Shape.
Also, talking to a hologram EVERY step really blows. Let me interact with the universe's characters, not a voice box lol

I had so much Apathy during act 1, it felt like nothing worthwhile was happenning, then I thought act 2 was brilliant and I was hopeful, then act 3 started strong but let itself down because tthe exotic mission barely changed, plus the fact they're STILL using Hydras as bosses ten years later without changing them at all maddens me. They have one attack and a stomp, they weren't good bosses in the Nexus strike, and they aren't good bosses now.
I’ve played this game too long. Maybe I burnt myself out on getting the expansion title Transcendant, but this is the first season-esque setup that I just didn’t finish. The first week or two of Encore not being in LFG hurt motivation - I haven’t even soloed the expert difficulty, and solo is my goal for everything possible.
Worried for next episode, hoping it is a ‘back to basics’ kinda thing: Here’s Fallen, they’re super evil, go kill.

iirc, Echoes was an experiment and a transitioning period from being a seasonal system to an episodic system (which I hope Revenant becomes that). Thus, at the beginning I did expect this “episode” to be mid and because of the expectation I wasn’t as upset. Then Encore came out and…whew boy. By the end of its third week, wits were at an end and that cutscene…it could’ve been done better. Like idk, maybe have Maya pull out a Panoptes-esque unit, morph into it, and start a little boss fight where Saint’s, Osiris’s, and Ikora’s lives are at stake? Then at the end, when we’re done weakening the boss, Ikora vaporizes the unit with a Nova, Saint charges in to pummel Maya to pieces, we come in and use our newfound powers to break the part of the Witness (Echo of Command) free. Bam: episode done, echo is gone, Maya is finished, etc.; everyone is happy and we pursue the next threat. I know for development time and all, things get complicated. But holy moly, this narrative and how the story is written is subpar at worst and mediocre at best. For we just defeated the Witness. Sword logic or not, we’re powerful af and we wield such power like Aragorn from LotR: with care and well thought-out actions. By that logic, that Command Echo is a smidgen compared to us and thus we shouldn’t had been so easily influenced by it. Sorry for this rambling but where was the story going man?? All I hope is they learned about this, with constructive criticism in mind, and develop the future content better. Though at this point, I ain’t holding my breath.
They're called EPISODES because, like TV show episodes, the story continues later on in future Episodes. Anyone expecting Episodes to be enclosed stories like Seasons were, has not understood the point of the change. And because so many of you didn't, Bungie are pivoting yet again to a different model, which is why nothing has a chance to stick and improve.

Usually seasons that occur after an expansions first season in the past are much meatier, have the chance to tell original stories as they’re not tied to Expansions and do not need to rely on an expansion backing up content that may not be present.
Season of the Chosen,Haunted and Deep, all of which have been the second season since seasons were overhauled, have proven to have been some of the best we’ve had all around. Not to mention the themes of each have been unique, and Revenant is shaping up be the same.
Also we have a dungeon releasing, which kinda doesn’t count as it’s sort of separate, but it’s still dropping with the season and given the recently shown art for it I do believe it’s going to be quite interesting. Regardless if it’s sold separately it is still content that is going to be relevant in this upcoming episode
This seasonal story was unironically the first one to make me angry. *Very* angry. Nothing but constant wishy washy romance love stories, literally no actual vex/failsafe action, and it ends with the Conductor just vanishing into a pool of milk to be heard again... Eventually.
Genuinely holy shit I wish we had an actual villain and MAYBE I'm repeating Datto's points but I have not many other places to rant at this about, it felt like constant meandering and stupid love drama that if I wanted to watch I'd go queue up some Korean drama reality show because they have A LOT OF THOSE. My friends don't get it since they like love stories a whole lot more than I possibly can (and I can understand why), but when it's nothing but that without any actual buildup to anything cool then nobody should be surprised when I and a lot of other people get pissed.
The story's genuinely infuriating compared to the sheer contrast of the quality of the season in terms of weapons and activities but there were so few of them it burned me out so hard. Maybe I was in denial all of Lightfall cause it still seemed promising for setup in Final Shape, FInal Shape offered exactly what I was looking for even if it was for a fleeting moment and then Echoes flung me STRAIGHT into anger on the latter half. I hope this is the only bad episode and they'll uise Echoes as a springboard to make Revenant and Heresy the best they can be I raelly hope but I am so goddamned out of hope for Bungie that I havent touched the game since the seasonal story completed besides helping friends in GM runs or if I had a new drip idea so I can sit in orbit for a few hours.
How we can possibly get Bungie to make things better than Echoes is beyond me, but I pray that happens.
If I had to take a guess Bungie has had some vague concept-idea of what they wanted to do with Maya for awhile with just "person goes rogue with enemy army" trope but never had a good place to drop it or it required too much context to tackle in a dump season in the old model and larger story segments going on.
Even when you go back through old Ishtar-FWC-Lakshmi-mad science stuff, there was some inklings that something was up, Maya having a bunch of clones and doing shenanigans was a bit of a concern but in a more abstract way. Hell in general FWC comparatively are a little overpowered with how they are constantly cooking up all sorts of big experimental things. For example FWC has their own future predicting machine via The Device, sort of a big reality for people we knew so little about and it's a bit crazy how we don't know a ton what ever happened to it after Splicer.
The biggest problem was Bungie had all of this stuff in arguably extremely obscure lore that most wouldn't even know where to look if they tried(I think Beyond Light CE lore even had stuff). Also the Containment stuff, even Lakshmi Splicer stuff barely scratches the surface.
That being said I think Bungie went with this at bare minimum to give an origin story for the Conductor and get it out of the way should the character/their influence continue on. It's a very sloppy presentation, you have to be an arguable lore nerd to really "get" what they were doing and even then, it's not necessarily the most interesting.
**TL DR** Story was meh, and had 0 mass appeal or even some what engaged player appeal. It is what it is.
What’s anticlimactic is that final cutscene. Saint-14 be slacking cause a Hive Knight Gaurdian would’ve definitely gotten the kill 😂
I'm disappointed with this season, yes I'm calling it season because that's what it is. The beginning was really interesting and then it devolved into "hey look, we made another gay relationship" instead of, y'know, letting us fight against Maya?
I don't care what anyone says, but Bungie has to really cut it with all these gay and rainbow relantionships; they're badly written, cringe, don't push the narrative at all, annoying and honestly, disgusting
Should they instead be straight relantionships? Nah, because Bungie is trash at writing romance in general, I don't want cheap romance on my space opera sci fi fantasy game

Bungie keeps promising huge changes to the core game but then accomplishes very little. Just last year they promoted episodes as a larger content drop with story beats that’s less predictable than seasons. Almost none of these promises were held, releasing a very lackluster story with the same repetitive seasonal content.
The content itself was the same but more polished. They left us expecting a change in pace but seemingly just used the extra development time to make the stuff we were sick of better.
Now Bungie is stating that the dual expansion model is going to heavily shake up the core experience, with other promises of better and diverse storytelling and UI changes. Which just sounds sooo mundane when you know they’re going to do the bare minimum for the game.
Have blocked the last war ad like 70 times now yet its still the only ad everytime i watch anything remotely gaming related! Wt actual f !!?!??!!?
My main issue with the plot is that Saint and Osiris are supposed to be the greatest Titan and greatest Warlock who ever lived. They should be THE power couple. But here, they're reduced to mopey sadboys. Worse, it's over something that should be commonly accepted in the Destiny universe: Your ghost reconstitutes a new copy of your body every time you die. You're not even "the real you" in THIS timeline.
I feel like these stories wouldn't be bad if it wasn't told the destiny way. What do i mean. Timegating. Weird fetch quests. The go here. Stand and listen. Click the next popup. Look at map. Spawn in. Do weird fetch quests while story juat. Happens. Off screen. Get a cool cinematic. Maybe.
Osiris has been the worst character in the franchise since his introduction. From his dei relationship with saint, to his awful voice acting and weird head. The biggest anticlimax coming from d1 and having so many hopes for osiris. Bungie all over. Just rubbish. Awful season. After 6k hours i havent touched the game since completing the new raid week 1. Skimming this video lets me know bungie is over and so is destiny
Feel like they need to scrap this and make D3, which I know is not the answer or easy. Will always be a fan of Destiny, given that I have sunk about 6k hours into D1&D2. But unless something drastic happens soon, it will remain uninstalled.
Onslaught's narrative should've always been "protect the tower from invading forces" easy to create replayability and add more loot to chase
Lost all my momentum for the season when the exotic mission softlocked on me three times during the final boss fight. Which sucks, ‘cause I was enjoying the shit out of it up until then.
I have 8000+ hours in the game, get rank 11 every season, play every season and expansion to the fullest and I think I’ve played this “episode” the least I’ve ever played Destiny in years, just not feeling it. Hopefully that changes with this next episode though.
Here my take before seeing. So we had such interesting premises with the Vex unusual behaviors, that could be a potential launch point for them to evolve or do something really cool with them for the future (like the treatment Fallen, Eliksni and Cabal did). But then we got ANOTHER story about some marriage/ relationship issue counseling story part 1241234 (that what feels like) where the Vex AGAIN where just bistanders passing by in their own story, also Maya whole story basically was just similar with Saint and Osiris, and yeah I guess was the idea but on the other hand I already had that, its done and dusted, can we have a story about stuff happening in the sistem now? Some old shifting politics, factions etc, you know something to keep interest in the world of Destiny, instead of some discount love drama episode ad infinitum.
For the rest, its just more Destiny, bit more dripfeeded but oddly enough that wasn't even much of a issue since outside the exotic Choir of One there wans't much that I wanted to chase really, so less interest to grind and played more when I felt like it (and thats good for me). But even a filthy casual like me starts to feel that's a bit too much power in our hands, a D3 or a fresh start feels not so bad nowadays
I agree, onslaught was the first time in many years for me the incentive/thrill to chase loot was fantastic! Shiny, enhancing & attunement.

What I wished they nailed was the potential threat that an echo could hold when in the wrong hands. All I really remember was Maya surviving a grape to the face and her playing ragdoll with a couple of Vex.
I’m hoping Fikrul with his vampire like darkness raised army could make us feel like “oh shit, this new Echo shit is fucking us up!”. I want someone to put genuine roadblocks in our path to defeating them.
I can't believe the Episodes format was such an abject failure that Bungie decided to ditch them already. Once Heresy wraps up we're not getting another Episode again, and good riddance. Hopefully the new format coming with the Frontiers expansion actually shakes things up.
I thought marketing was saying that episodes were epilogues for TFS but this first one didn’t feel like it tied up any loose ends, just introduced more of them. Saint and Osiris are starting to feel like Crow during Witch Queen where even though I loved the character(s), this whole plot point is starting to overstay its welcome. Especially since it feels like it gets resolved 5 different times and the characters still don't feel much deeper.
I have a issue with the ending feels like a nothing burger but understandable because they finally want a big bad for the vex.The main issue i have with episode is the big vat of nothing every three weeks at the end of an act
I think Datto nailed the summary of this episode/season perfectly. Far too much lovey-dovey story threads not enough action, and no final confrontation with the main villain of the entire episode!! (very weak)
This episode was definately a low C grade for season for me barely about to lower into D. You literally didnt miss anything if you skip this episode. Like this season's story felt lack luster and less impactful that it felt like only nessus was impacted. Maya literally got tucked away into "hey ill come back" and we never got the echo maya still has it.
Reading these comments makes me realize destiny will never be able to make its player base happy. Either play it don’t this community has the biggest crybabies I’ve ever seen

It feels like so much of the recent story of Destiny has involved the romantic relationships of characters. It's definitely something that can be interesting and done well, but why does it feel like the writers don't know how to write any of the characters' motivations if they aren't involving a romantic partner. It becomes very boring, stale and feels very 'Twilight' lol.
Hear me out, with the witness gone the biggest threat could be other people again like in most civilizations. So perhaps a episode basd on political inner conflicts could be cool.

I came into this season with expectations of the start of a new vex villain and i expected vex stuffs, but instead I got awkwardly standing around while some couples complain about their relationships and then tell me to go shoot some robots for 5 mins. Maya barely felt like a vex and instead just someone using Vex. I felt more emotion from the interactions with failsafe than i did anything from the main story.
Breach Executable sucked…. The early part of each mission just felt like more busy work. That turned me off to the whole episode because of how they make you do it most weeks.
Anyone know what the hell is up with the tormentor boss in breach executable?! Seriously haven’t been able to get it to spawn in about 30-40 runs. Cant get title without it. Feel like I’m missing something
I don’t think it’s something that would interest you a whole lot but getting into speedrunning/challenge runs has really revitalized my interest in the game, working on solo witness and trio flawless last wish is some of the most fun I’ve had since the game launched.
I’m tired of bungie giving every villain some long backstory about how they’re not really evil, just victims of some tragedy turned evil. Just give me someone to hate. Give me a Ramsay Bolton
I genuinely liked the story a lot for this season. Really the biggest fumble was that cutscene where Maya summons 4 goblins and everybody lost their mind over it. Have her summon a full army instead and she is instantly more menacing and feels like a bigger threat.
I’m not even gonna play the story the rest of the year. This year is just gonna be really bad, what’s killing it is severe time gating. But also the content hasn’t been good

My pitch for bringing back shinies that still encourages a loot chase but keeps the shinies as these super rare "whoa you have that?" Status and also make into the light feel like its worth playing again.
Bring back the hub, let me reset the rank at shax there and each season add new weapons to tune that have their own respective shiny varient, when that season ends the shiny isnt available anymore just like into the light and just rinse repeat every season
