Croatia is a spectacular and diverse country, but while the Adriatic coast and islands are very popular and internationally famous, relatively little is known about eastern Croatia, even by locals. Take a tour with me on a 6-day trip I took east in November 2021, after which I was surprised at how many of my Zagreb friends - even those with the money to go skiing internationally each year - had never been to Slavonia.
And when I started to quiz them on their knowledge of eastern Croatia, I was VERY surprised at the lack of knowledge. So join me on a tour, and then take the 3-question quiz about eastern Croatia that I have so far asked 70 people in Zagreb. Only one so far has got all three questions correct.

Ono kad ti Englez mora nesto objasniti...
Well done Paul 🙂
Thanks. I can never get tired of saying what a hidden gem eastern Croatia is.
Irac, ne Englez. Njima je to razlika na razini Hrvat - Srbin.
They need management fom Istria.

My fiancée and I decided to visit Osijek while spending our summer in Serbia (we live in Poland but Serbia is my home country) as it felt like a good idea for an easy and short weekend excursion. We absolutely loved the place and the people. I'm not sure I ever encountered such friendly and kind folks anywhere else. I think culturally they are incredibly similar to Vojvodinians in Serbia. The town itself was wonderful to walk around, a true underrated gem. While Croatia is more known for its coast, my idea of it is always closer to those beautiful central European towns
Love Osijek - here is our guide to Osijek if you are interested - total-croatia-news.com/destinations/osijek-15/
Well, I am from Dubrovnik but I am visiting Slavonija at least two times every year last 24 years and I can agree with you - Slavonija and Baranja are incredibly beautiful.
with amazing people and hospitality
1. Beli Manastir
2. sv. Peta Cathedral - Đakovo, sv. Petar i Pavao Cathedral - Osijek, old town and city walls in Ilok, Tvrđa in Osijek
3. Šaran na rašljama, čobanac, fiš paprikaš
Hats down Paul. Love your videos and sharing them with a respectful number of my friends abroad (feeling a bit embarrassed at the same time). We needed a sort of a neutral common sense frame of mind to see how wrong we are in so many cases. Guessed it was a child sickness related issue, but after almost 30 years the children either grew twisted or just moved to Ireland or any other uhljebistan free country. Thank you loads. Bless you!
Thank you! Lots more coming if you want to subscribe.
Wow! Great trip ideas! Can’t wait to visit.
It is a special region
I‘m from Vinkovci, und I thank you for this video.
I miss kulenova seka, pečenica I kobasica.
Beside Đakovo and Osijek cathedral, I love a gothic church of St. Elijah in Vinkovci.
The biggest town in Barania is Beli Manastir, but the centre of Barania is in Hungary, Pećuh(Pécs).
You are welcome
your videos are making me really proud...thank you....I really hope Croatians, and Croatia, love you back because you deserve it.....

Your report is amazing and much appreciated. Since I live in Slavonia (Nasice, I call it Nashville, I hope I am the only one who does it...hehehe) I can certainly number all the answers to your questions, however, I think you picked the wrong season of the year for visiting such a vivid, beautiful and interesting region, especially missing out some other place such as Slavonski Brod, Požega and Vinkovci. Nevertheless, I can only express my gratitude for the effort and passion of promoting Croatia. You must be a precious English (British) gem who arrived in Croatia, adding it an extra value. Welcome and enjoy all the perks while living here.
Thank you and yes there is much more to see in this beautiful region. I will cover some of it in my next book, Around the World in 80 Disasters. I like to travel all seasons - it gives a fuller picture of life in places.

Nemam riječi kojim bih Vam svima opisao ljepotu i strahotu slavonskog ratišta. Lijep pozdrav svima!
What a lovely post. I would say that they know a reasonable amount

Baranja is a special gem which is often overlooked. You can spend 6 days only there. If you need a guide there, just tell me Paul, i did my PhD there which was related with wine cellars (which are called 'Gatori' there) and during that period i fell in love in Baranja, it's people, landscape, food and wine. P.S. Monument in Batina is not just Soviet style, it is actually dedicated to Red Army soldiers who were KIA during fierce Batina battle in which they helped Tito's army to flush the Nazis from Srijem and Baranja in 1944.
Baranja was a major surprise for me - a really special region. Need to get to know it better.
Paul you’re a gem! We are very lucky to have you! Hope you have some more wonderful moments here! Cheers!
Am sure there will be many more. It is a great country.
This was impressive, thanks for making this video.
I'm related to the curator of the Vucedol museum, and its unforgivable how overlooked by history buffs and tourists it is. It was an incredibly fascinating culture.
Vucedol is one of the most amazing (and under visited) things in Croatia. Incredible place.
And Vučedolska golubica is kept in Zagreb, not in the Vučedol Museum, nevertheless what a wonderful museum! Amazing, easy to understand and follow. I couldn’t believe that a museum can be such fun to visit. Really, really amazing!
Welcome to Slavonski Brod too!
It is a great town
Have you been north of Zagreb, in zagorje and Međimurje regions? They are also underlooked by a lot of Croats yet have an interesting history and an amazing cusine.
I lived in Varazdin for 5 years if that counts. And the horseradish soup at Mala Hiza was one of the best things I tasted here.
one of the few who come to visit Slavonia, Baranja, Posavina and other parts of Croatia not so well known to tourists, and not even to native Croats... I hope you will visit us during the summer, especially the area around Požega, which the Romans called Vallis Aurea - golden valley .. every September for several days, the Golden Strings of Slavonia is held, a cultural manifestation that cherishes the old customs of Slavonia, what Klapa is to Dalmatians, that is Bečar to Slavonians. HVALA puno na odlicnom videu
Thanks for your kind words. It is a great reason, including Pozega. You might enjoy this from our trip last year www.total-croatia-news.com/editorial/58263-slavonia-full-of-life
I am from Osijek. Thank you, this is an excellent video! I think in general Croatians are very little interested in our own country, even in the region in which they live. We have as a country in Europe such rich history and culture, literary every street in Osijek has a story, but people are not aware. For further research I recommend dr. Stjepan Sršen's "Pozdrav iz Osijeka" (he tells a story of Osijek through old postcards) and Božo Plevnik's "Stari Osijek" (more detailed historical analysis). Greetings from Osijek 🙂
You are very welcome. Osijek is a great place, and I love the energy. Am very much looking forward to the Osijek Wine Festival next week.
@@PaulBradbury that's a smart choice of an event 😉
Thank you Paul. I'm Croatian and I enjoy your videos. East Croatia has had some good things brewing the last decade or so. More and more people with good ideas and the determination to make them happen. Hope it makes more people decide to stay on their land and not emigrate to countries like Ireland or Germany. By the way, I'm glad for the recent change in your title. Looks better this way.
Thanks and nice to hear. There is a lot of positive energy in eastern Croatia, and people are starting to connect. Am excited to see what is coming.

Where's Brod??? Always underlooked and underated... even a places and towns that are 2,3 times smaller get the press... and in croatian media we are also under the radar..
This video is amazing and shows actually how much east of Croatia is unknown, thank you for that. Now, if I may contribute, as man from Senj (not Dalmatia, but Kvarner, also coastal region) who moved recently near Vinkovci for work. Main reason why Slavonija and Baranja aren't so recognized and valued in Croatia is because of ads and media. If you want to go somewhere in Croatia, irrelevant being tourist or from Croatia, first thing that comes to mind is either Dalmacija or Istra. Also, Slavonija isn't doing much to improve its own status among Croats or tourists because economy here doesn't rely on tourism although people here are incredibly welcoming. Also, general flat area isn't helping at all, whether it's in connecting to the rest of the country or it's just good looking landscape. Since I love mountains like Velebit where I grew up, it's difficult to get use to such a flat area. This region has massive potential, rich history, incredible people but it's simply not attractive to live here. Slavonija also gained bad reputation for being emptied in last decade or so. Baranja however is getting tourist recognition.
Also, since I like to explore as well, I have to mention some places here that are stunning. Papuk and Jankovac or Duboka, just magnificent hilly area! Kopački rit, Prandau castle in Valpovo, some excellent river beaches like Bistrinci or Kopika on Drava, Ada in Vukovar, Šarengrad... so many events like Đakovački vezovi or Vinkovačke jeseni.
Yes I agree - I still have so much more to discover. Great region, great people.
1. Manastir
2. Osijek Cathedral, Osijek Tvrđa, Ružica grad Orahovica
3. Fiš, Šaran na rašljama, Čvarci :), Čobanac
Thank you for making the video and promoting this incredible Croatian region
You are welcome. It is such a special region, with even better people. I love coming here (in Osijek now). If you are interested, here is a report on our full trip last year.
@Quickr It is Beli Manastir! Also, Fiš & Šaran u rašljama are not slavonian meals!
i'm from Baranja, i can't say i was suprised about uniqueness of approach to tourism in Baranja, i'm glad to see that it's developing. unfortunately in Baranja u get 50% pay for same job u do in Dalmatia or Istria and it's hurting local population a lot. so i'm grateful ur bringing attention to this region of Croatia that's been forgotten by Croatian ppl and government. it is a sin. every1 is in Vukovar 1 day of the year and then it's forgotten. i'm a bit resentful to ppl from coast sometimes cuz of that.
I think Baranja has a huge future, as does all the east. People are looking for safety, lifestyle and authentic experiences, and I think Baranja will benefit a lot from the remote work revolution.
1. Beli Manastir, 2. Katedrala in Đakovo, Dvorac Eltz in Vukovar & Tvrđa Osijek 3. Šaran na rašljama, Čobanac, Fiš paprikaš.
I love ❤ Croatia Baranja/ Osijek/ Vokovar & all of Slavonja.

Hello, I've recently stopped at your vlog about Croatia and watched some of them.
I have to admit that you've got me with those three questions you've placed.
... I sadly have to confirm that you are absolutely right in that what you've said.

Thanks for your comment. The best way to learn is to visit. This is some of the magic from our trip in November 2021 www.total-croatia-news.com/editorial/58263-slavonia-full-of-life
Đakovo Cathedral is fascinating because of the way it was built. The whole thing is made of bricks, including the foundations, which are an architectural feat in themselves, since they are also made of bricks and are huge to carry all that weight abive ground.
It is probably the most impressive church in this region
under the foundation of the cathedral there are oak pylons, because it was built on a swampy area at the time. In this way, say, the foundations of Venice.
@@DBvideo-s Yas, as pylons, and through the brick foundations there are passages similar to the catacombs, I was down there with my father 40-45 years ago, our pastor from Andrijevaca asked him to check the condition, since he was a builder who worked in that way in the late 40s and 50s. It took two days for them to pump out the water from the lower levels
you are doing great job! tnx

The White Boar is the best hidden gem in eastern Croatia. Hope my Laskos are still chilling in the fridge.
I've been to Osijek many times I love Slavonija, great people and food
Agree. The food is great but the people are even better.
It is hard to say what is specific slavonian dish because cuisine in Croatia is highly influenced from neighboured countries. Especially Hungary, Bosnia and Austria. A beautiful mix.

U usta ti ga spakovo, watch out for that :D. Excellent video, I really like the way you present Croatia, better than commercials.
Haha thanks. I think there is a case for keeping things a lot more real, rather than glossy commercials. The videos are fun to make.
I am from Zagreb, been living here all my life for 43y now and I realized how little do I know about my hometown.
Friend of mine started a biking tour company around city centre and made 2.5 hours route with about 20 stops to talk about city's history and I higly recommend it!
There is a lot of unknowns to be discovered in Zagreb. Subscribe ti the channel. We will have a lot next year.
My dad is from the Arzano area of Dalmacija and his tiny village and house is on the Bosnian side now 20 metres from the Croatian Bosnian border line. His brothers family and descendants all live in Osijek now. I was surprised that they all cheer for Osijek and not Hajduk !
Vučedol je super. Kroz godine bio već par puta.
Vucedol if one of the best things in Croatia, and I am excited to see how plans will develop. Such a pity that so few people visit.

We could also put it in a way that Baranya is a county that also is a part of Hungary, said that, Pécs would be the biggest city and the capital of that county :)

Perhaps you could visit Western Slavonija once?
I propose Lipik, a very small town, but with lot to offer....
The AI learning center of Croatia is not something that regular tourist would be interested in, but... We have long history of being healing resort, we have Lipizzans horses stables, rich history from Austria-Hungary era, and much more from the recent decades to show and offer...
Tx for the tip. I have been to western slavonia many times. Lots more videos coming if you want to subscribe
I don't like freshwater fish, although I can eat it. I love kulen. However, I can't stand the taste of wine, and I rarely drink alcohol. So a couple of the "wine places" you mentioned are a no go for me if they don't have something else to offer. I hate the fact that a lot of places in Croatia revolve around wine.
Have you visite Banija recently??
Yes

Beli Manastir?
3 Pejačević castles 😂- does it count?
Tvrđa (sort of, not really "a building") Đakovačka katedrala, Eltz castle Vukovar)
3rd one is easy- čobanac, fiš, šaran na rašljama
Yes. Beli Manastir is the one that caused the most confusion.

Beli Manastir it is easy
old town citadel or Fortress in Osijek as well in Ilok ,Castle Pejačević in Našice,Đakovo Cathedral...
And " Sarma" cabbage rolls filled with minced meat and rice🤤 no fish soup, beef stew, kulen etc. Sarma is the key here for locals🫡
Are you saying sarma is a Slavonian dish?
@@PaulBradbury yes ! All those dishes are influence of Hungary cuisine fiš paprikaš(fish soup),čobanac(you can translate Shepards stew),gulaš od junetine/divljači(beef/game stew) all of them came from Hungary as well as kulen, pork cracklings, pork smoked sausage...🫡

There is a lot to know
@@PaulBradbury I agree completely
Nice video Paul, thank you for your effort to show the world the eastern part of Croatia, but I feel that you are missing the point of living here. Yes, everything is valid from the tourist perspective but I think we enjoy not being a tourist attraction. Yes we are missing some help since the government politic of migration is in place and we need a better quality of life "not more shopping centers" but places where people can earn money not spend them. Regarding Slavonia, there are two common ways to make money and everyone cannot be "Poljoprivrednici" or to be a Tourist attraction.
If you have spent time with the local folk you would find out that people are strong in heart but simple and hard-working this quality you cannot find anywhere in the world as you have mentioned in some of your videos, we have our way of doing things that nobody who is not native will understand :)
Cheers.

Čovječe koliko se ja sad osijećam glup
Haha. Time to visit
This is hilarious. I don't know any croatian that knows answers to these questions. Embarrassing actually.
