Anthony Robles vs Jordan Burroughs: who ya got? (That’s more of a Jordan joke.) Seriously, I remember watching this match live, knowing Anthony’s story for a few years. The guy was a phenomenal wrestler.
That guy must have freakish upper body strength. It's a very unique challenge wrestling him on the feet because you have to go to his world, on the ground, which negates all your explosive takedowns.
esteve72 yeah it is a challenge he has the upper body of someone at a much higher weight class which makes it hard to get behind him once he gets his grip
And the big question is, just how do you train for this? There is no arguing that Robles had to overcome disadvantages, but he did so with shining colors and made the most out of what he had. Of course, those disadvantages gave way to some obvious advantages that he capitalized on quite well....massive upper body strength equal to that of a wrestler at least two weight classes up. Not very easy to deal with. What's more, Anthony got to train against guys with both legs all the time, but very few had the benefit of the same inverse training opportunities. The only time they got to train against a wrestler with Robles' attributes was when they wrestled against Robles.
I got the chance to actually meet Anthony when I was in 6th grade, he's an amazing guy super nice to talk to as a wrestler it was such a cool experience to just meet a national champion especially a guy like him

I wrestled in the 125 lb weight class too back in the mid 90s. My strength was my height because I was very skinny but my legs were as strong as my teammates that outweighed me by up to 70 pounds. I almost always wrestled people at least 6 inches shorter than me and they had not faced someone my height and build before. In regional and state tournaments, opponents would make jokes prior to my match with them, sometimes they taunted me at the time of the handshake at the beginning of the match. In a regional tournament I beat the #5 and #2 wrestler in the state (who tapped out) and then lost on points to the #1 ranked guy. It was a humbling experience for many wrestlers that thought my build made me weak and in one case, the guy that was ranked #2 apologized for disrespecting me prior to the match. He asked me to teach him how I performed the scissor lock so effectively. I worked with him for 30-45 minutes showing him my technique which combined a head lock to stretch the torso by arching the opponent's back and then applying pressure not from front to back but on the sides of the torso which not only restricted breathing but also was incredibly painful to the kidneys. I leveraged what most people thought was a disadvantage and made it my greatest asset. When sprawled out, smaller opponents could not roll me and if I got them in a scissor lock with my legs, they could not break it. Robles did the same but on a whole different level and it is incredibly impressive that he could compete without a leg, much less win a national championship. Really, just an unbelievable story of overcoming a weakness and finding your strengths to achieve greatness. What a joy to watch him in this match.
One of my best friends wrestled him back in 2006 I believe, and he said this dude was insanely strong. But true, he would be like a 150 pounder if he had another leg, not talking shit, just saying
@@Ether-pb5gb i don’t give af what he’s built like. He’s missing a limb! Every D1 NCAA champ in history has had 2 legs. Sounds like the advantage leans heavily towards 2 legged athletes.
Honestly Anthony Robles had an advantage...he had the underbody strength of a 150 or 160 pounder. And matt couldn't really attack from standup position. Still props to Robles
Normally I root against Tom and Terry Brands and Iowa, no disrespect intended, it's just a sports thing, but for 1st time I felt sorry for Tom and Terry as they sat on sidelines quiet and still, no jumping around, no animated theatrics, no yelling BECAUSE there was nothing they could do as coaches, McDonough was GREAT and did his best but just can you do against such a powerful uniquely skilled wrestler like Robles. So essentially, I have huge respect for Tom Brands, I will never root for Iowa simply because it's a sports thing, gotta root for the underdogs to beat the kingpin.
Missing a leg probably allows him to put more of his weight into arm chest or abdominal muscle, he may weigh 125 like his 3:18 opponent but not having an entire muscular leg and bones of weight probably means he has more strength in grip and grapple then his same weighted opponents, and while he has wrestled probably thousands of two legged opponents every one of his opponent’s at competition level besides teammates have never wrestled a one legged opponent, obviously it gives him some negatives or weaknesses but it honestly might give him more positives and strengths in his favor, but like he said every wrestler has to try amplify and use what strengths they have and mitigate or. Over what weaknesses they have. On another note I love these inspirational Cinderella stories as much as anyone but I always wonder about the poor opponent that knows he has to be the one to try to put a stopper on the movie or book or story like talks everyone wants to see unfold, in the movies they always make the last toughest opponent morally bad mean repugnant deserving of a comeuppance but he just like his opponent has probably overcome many hardships and put in as much hard work and dedication as his rival, it’s got to be hard going in and trying to keep your head on winning when you know 99% of the people in. The crowd and watching at home want the inspirational against all odds going to be made into a sport movie later if the other guys wins ending.
Absolutely outstanding performance. I definitely underestimated Robles for sure I couldn’t imagine wrestling someone with 1 leg that’s absolutely crazy.
I don’t know if you’ll ever get a stronger 125 lb wrestler than Robles. Robles has the body of a 184-197 lb wrestler, but simply because he has no leg, he’s 125. Probably one of the biggest 125 lb wrestlers I’ve seen
Each leg is 15-20% of your body weight, so a two-legged Robles would weigh around 150. Incidentally, I wrestled for D3 Case Western Reserve University from 1980-82, and one of the other schools in the conference had a one-legged wrestler. I don't remember anything he did on the mat, but he had to be lifted onto the scale to avoid breakage.
@@roberthudson1959 you kind of just answered your own question. If 15% is the minimum we’re going for in terms of weight, and this is an “if,” then he’s at about 70% body weight. Do the math and about 18 lbs is worth 10%. Do that by 3 we would get 54 lbs. add that onto what his weight was then and we’d get 179 lbs at least
@@keyboard2758 when the hell did I say this?! Why did I cut off both legs😂. You are right, what the hell was I thinking at this time. I might still be looking at this wrong, but he has just one leg, assuming 15%, it would be approximately 125 x 0.15 which would be 18.75. So add that to his weight it’s 143.75 or just in between 143-144. I also realized this could be done another way (I’m pretty sure this is actually the right way to do it, I just for some reason cut both his legs off last time when calculating), but if we take 15% away, he’s at 85% body weight. Therefore if we do 125/85, we get 1.47 per percent. Do 1.47 x 15 and we get 22.05, which added on will make his weight 147.05 if he had his other leg. It might be wrong again, but at least that’s more reason than the other post I made
He wasn't immune to takedowns, but most wrestlers center their offense around the opponent's right leg, which means that they had to change their entire style to wrestle Robles.
As a wrestler myself I don’t even know how I would process the strategy to compete with someone who is is at the strength level of 50 pounds higher in weight class. How do you train for this type of match?
This loss is Tom Brand's fault. The Iowa style does not work in this application. First thing Robles does every period is back up and and drop down. Matt should have stalled and stayed away from him. Until the 3rd period, then scored a takedown and made that the only real action. Robles weakness is lack of action in the neutral position. I also want to apologise for any insult I made to handicap citizens, but even if McDonough would have won all he get credit for was beating a "single leg attack"!
Andy Putman it’s really difficult to switch up your whole play style in minutes. Let alone train for. But I agree, he should’ve at least put some effort into making Robles get out of his comfort zone.
I saw this kid wrestle as a 9th grader for Mesa Jr. He sucked. He got like 5th or 6th place among 13 9th graders in Mesa, Arizona. He had great high school coaches. Some of the best.
Robles is super hard to wrestle because his opponents have to change their style in order to compete against him. Plus what he lacks from the bottom he makes up for it with his incredible upper body strength.
I don’t believe reynolds has an advantage in the sport. His advantage is the fact that no one has any training time against his body type while he has all the time in the world - which is fair game. Also the rules could be hard to enforce and are not designed for his body which could be an advantage but that not the point.
I'm curious how Robles would've been dealt with in today's NCAA. It seems like the sport, possibly with the help of sites like TH-cam and Flowrestling making endless amounts of film available, has evolved a lot in the last decade. You certainly shouldn't get down on Robles' level and tie up with him like McDonough does here. I think you just wait him out and level change and tap his head right? Let Robles get the stalling call, he's not going anywhere. And you def don't want to get under him. I think you choose top and win the riding time battle. You'd basically have to provoke stalling calls. Fascinating that there were people who were able to solve the Robles puzzle his other years in college before he won it all. What changed? It seems like it should be an all or nothing thing where he either beats everyone and the missing leg is an advantage or the opposite and he gets killed.
It’s honestly so difficult to wrestle someone like Robles. He’s a big guy at 125lb. With out an amputation he’s probably 149-157. So that’s a very jacked man at 125. So don’t act like it’s easy to beat him. It’s not.
As a wrestler I will tell you that this is unfair. So you wrestle a guy with one leg that would clearly outweigh you if he had a leg. Then you are forced to wrestle his style of match which is extremely low to the ground. Then you have no leg to grab when you're trying to counter or prevent his offensive. Its bullshit.
@@boombox3819huge disadvantage you say his upper body is strong but he has no leg force on bottom which having only one leg on bottom is much worse then having more upper body strength on top shooting is almost impossible and so is level changing moving is so much more difficult there’s a reason he was the first.
So the rules are that you cannot do takedowns (I get it people) and you cannot break contact with him. Thereby taking any advantage that someone with 2 legs could have and actually giving him an advantage in that he has the upper body of someone who would wrestle 160 pounds, literally giving him an advantage in almost any match he wrestles. So, in being fair to him, the rules are decidedly unfair to the other wrestler.
we can talk all we want about who had the advantage, but it really doesnt look like mcdonough was trying as hard as he should/could have. Really didn't make much attempt to get off bottom, and wasn't particularly aggressive otherwise.
Daquion Goodbeir Is it fair for him to be born with a disadvantage and working with it to his best ability? Gosh some people are unbelievable no one wants to be handicapped.
@W Smoltz so if you cut off a leg, that would be an advantage for you? i wonder why more ncaa wrestlers dont try that, seems to be an instant national title. im thinking you wouldnt be able to wrestle as well...do you agree? what is your point, dumbass? brent metcalf trained way harder than you did, are you going to cry and complain about an advantage? you're a simple brick, so you probably would.
Unfair? So you're saying if you tool 50 wrestlers with one leg and 50 wrestlers with 2 legs and matched them up and had matches, that the 1-leg wrestlers would most likely win their match because it's not fair to the person with two legs? 🤣
He hits the same moves every match. . Technically he not great.. not fair. Not saying I could do it if I was him.. but They shouldn't let him wrestle. If you wrestled him in practice found his weakness you could beat him everytime.
When the wrestler without a leg makes you feel pitty for the other wrestler thats crazy
He would have weighed 150 or more if he was he had two legs. So he has a insanely strong upper body. The ability to wrestle this well is insane
Yeah I feel like he would be more like a 170-180
He also doesn’t have a leg lmaoo

Great performance from Robles, but I’m confused how that wasn’t a takedown at the very end when McDonough was behind him
Must feel weird to reach for a leg and there is no leg there
Thats the advantage.
305 lb bench holy shit!
Here comes everybody talking about the guy with one leg has an advantage 🙄
how does he not tho? did you even listen to what the commentators said?

Too bad for matt. I mean his opponent is built like a 185 pounder. But good for anthony. What an accomplishment!
It’s honestly so difficult to wrestle someone like Robles. He’s a big guy at 125lb. With out an amputation he’s probably 149-157. So that’s a very jacked man at 125. So don’t act like it’s easy to beat him. It’s not.
"He's a big guy at 125lb." Me who weighs 178
Robles really had a leg up on Mcdonough
What a crybaby running off the mat after losing lmao Iowa are clowns
Holy crap he’s insane
Man said without the use…ngga he don’t HAVE a right leg lol
305 LBs lifted by a 125 pound guy, is that true? I believe the 100 pullups in 2 minutes thing.
Can definitely believe the 305 lbs the dude has the upper body of someone who’s 160-170 the only reason he’s 125 is because he’s missing leg
So thats what deadpool was talking about
As a wrestler I will tell you that this is unfair. So you wrestle a guy with one leg that would clearly outweigh you if he had a leg. Then you are forced to wrestle his style of match which is extremely low to the ground. Then you have no leg to grab when you're trying to counter or prevent his offensive. Its bullshit.
As a wrestler, I will tell you that you are being silly.
@@schenksteven1wow you really explained yourself well with an excellent argument
@@boombox3819huge disadvantage you say his upper body is strong but he has no leg force on bottom which having only one leg on bottom is much worse then having more upper body strength on top shooting is almost impossible and so is level changing moving is so much more difficult there’s a reason he was the first.
ok...he has one leg...buuuuutttt...his muscle mass is immensely heavier...
Is it me or did he not give a bad control, then took him down over and over and the last period?
No takedowns. Spinning from behind to out front to back behind to out front is 0 points.
04:41, NICE!!!!!!!!!!!
I’m surprised he didn’t pick top for the third period
He woudlve majored Matt fs like 10-0 or 10-1 like nuts
we can talk all we want about who had the advantage, but it really doesnt look like mcdonough was trying as hard as he should/could have. Really didn't make much attempt to get off bottom, and wasn't particularly aggressive otherwise.
Un fuckin real
Would have been better if he came out without crutches.... it almost seems nit fair for dude with two legs...
Checkmate, legriders

Show 1000 loves
I bet his upper body strength is that of a 140 pounder
more dude. Way more. 305 bench. Over 100 pull-ups in 2 minutes.
Bruh if McDonough stayed on his feet instead of going down to his level he could’ve went for like a dresser dump or something
Is this even fair honestly?
Daquion Goodbeir Is it fair for him to be born with a disadvantage and working with it to his best ability? Gosh some people are unbelievable no one wants to be handicapped.
how is it unfair? two guys that weigh the same
@W Smoltz so if you cut off a leg, that would be an advantage for you?
i wonder why more ncaa wrestlers dont try that, seems to be an instant national title.
im thinking you wouldnt be able to wrestle as well...do you agree?
what is your point, dumbass? brent metcalf trained way harder than you did, are you going to cry and complain about an advantage?
you're a simple brick, so you probably would.
Yes he only has one leg, and don’t say about his body strength. HE HAS ONE LEG TO STAND ON
I think having one leg put him at an advantage...more upper body strength.i don't take nothing away from this success...forkim
So so so unfair...he's probably naturally a 165lber minus the leg then cutting another 10 at least!
Nah the dude from IOWA just didn’t wrestle him well. Robles almost lost to Keyjar in the quater or semi I think.
Nah he’s wrestled Ben a number of times in practice and at the ncaa he still lost twice he’s fine
What a L human being
