      I don't get to use it much, as Oklahoma is windy and most calm days I am at work, nothing should explode as long as I don't put a sealed unit in there, I keep the propane and oil back away from the heat, some guys that have waste oil stoves like to preheat the oil so that it vaporizes and burn's better Thanks for watching Kevin

    i have a setup thats a lot like that , but i use a steel drum laying on its side with 2 - 1/2" holes drilled at the bottom rim and the drum canted at about a 15 degree angle , that allows the molten aluminum to flow out and the heavier steel will get caught by the ribs in the barrel , makes it really easy to clean out and you can fit things like rear lawn mower axels in it too, also , i made a door to contain more of the heat

    • @Okiescrapper
      @Okiescrapper  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      sounds like a good setup. kind of like what oil burner used. the door is a good idea and if you could wrap the drum in kale wool and them seal it with something that would help to get more heat. Thanks for watching

    When I saw your setup and how it works, I initially thought of my Lee melting pot and how it looks like the same idea. If you installed a levered value on the bottom of your melting barrel, then you could open the valve and fill up whatever mold you wish and close it again. And since it would be controllable, you don't have to worry about dripping metals when you are doing something else. Just an idea. The valve isn't difficult to design or install. Just a tapered rod into a tapered outlet. The tapers are different angles to control the flow. Thumbs Up!

    • @Okiescrapper
      @Okiescrapper  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I like the idea, the threads on the 3/4 inch hole in the bottom are messed up, and with my luck the aluminum would cool and harden in the valve and I would never get it to melt. would have to put the burner on the valve to melt the hardened aluminum. I will have to do a search for the lee melting pot and see how it works. Thanks for watching

    • @gregw8924
      @gregw8924 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Okiescrapper Gary M is likely talking about a Lee production pot for bullet casting. They simply have a tapered wedge (think steel cork)that closes the pour spout hole. It is inside the pot in the molten lead and pivots with a weighted handle so it is normally closed.

    I find that letting molten aluminum fall into a pail of water results in small nuggets of aluminum that are easy to handle, easily put into a crucible for remelting, and are often very clean with little or no dross. One suggestion would be to use a 5 gallon metal pail preferably on a turntable. Turning slowly the ingots would never glob up and would result in a very friendly raw aluminum product for either future recasting or future Ingot making. I have done this on several occasions and is my new go-to way of doing things. Give it a shot. I don't think you'll regret it.

    • @Okiescrapper
      @Okiescrapper  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I may have to try that, I will have to cut a hole in the metal plate under the hole, and I will have to put the thing on legs or I do have a metal table with no top that will work, it is sitting on a metal garbage can right now, Thanks for the idea. I saw a video a few years ago where a guy tried that but he didn't turn the bucket and had a nice piece of art when he got done, he wanted pellets. Thanks for watching

    • @67spellcaster
      @67spellcaster 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Okiescrapper if your pail of water was deep enough it might not require turning it. Mine was only probably 14 in deep. I'll bet if it was 30 inches deep the drops would cool by the time they made it to the bottom. Even with the setup I had without it turning the " art work" was very easily disassembled with a couple of Love taps with a sledge. I think deep enough water might negate the need for a turntable. Perhaps even just a good squirrel in the bucket might do the trick if the molten aluminum was entering off centre, and not in the relatively still middle of a vortex. Looks to me like you won't be long figuring it out :-) good luck!

    • @tobhomott

      I have a wood fired stack melter that works this way. The bottom third of a 55 gallon drum full of water under a stand with a grate on top and another 55 gallon drum with no ends standing on the grate. Fill the top drum about halfway with firewood, throw 3 aluminum wheels on top of the wood, light from below and watch it burn for an hour. Works great, but an oil burner would mean not having all that charcoal and ash mush in the bucket with the aluminum... Maybe I'll try it. If you keep adding cold water now and then, the pellets won't stick together.

      @Okiescrapper  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    First time watching your channel. I'd never get away with the smoke here I town where I do my melting. Question. Would it be more efficient to keep more material in the furnace at a time.?4 Would you get more effective use of the btu's? Do you just have a drain hole in the bottom where it runs out? So simple😉

    • @Okiescrapper
      @Okiescrapper  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      yes there is a 3/4 inch hole to one side of the bottom, It may be more efficient to keep it full, but I try to keep stuff back from the inlet hole to get the best flame, at this time I am sure that I have over 50 gallons of oil to burn, so not going to run out any time soon, I have a playlist on the burner and melting pot, I even show my first burns when the temps. didn't get all that hot, and the build of the burner. the cupcake tin is tapered so the aluminum comes out easy. the ingots weigh right at 1/2 lb. and fit into most crucibles. the soup can you would have to take the angle grinder and cut the can away. I'm re-watching this video, & one thing that you might have already changed your mind on is the need or efficiency of remelting your cupcakes to get them more pure. It seems for the extra money you would need to get for them, (because of the extra work & fuel needed) that they could just buy them as they are in the cupcakes, after all they will need to remelt them to use them anyways, just let them clean the little bit of dross that will float to the top themselves. I've melted lots of aluminum cans & with them you get a lot more dross. Have you tried melting aluminum cans in your set up, it seem like maybe that system I've been using might still be the way to go. I will see soon, I hope. Thanks.
