    I'm fine with reducing the amount of planeswalkers in each set, there has been a LOT of them the last couple years. But, limiting it to 1 seems restrictive to the design of things. We'll see how long it lasts, it's not gonna be long before we start to see sets with more than 1, but hopefully, not near so many as we've had recently.

      I dont think it'll last for too long, with the 3 year standard set block, I believe they're hoping the older Planeswalkers to still be depended on for the lack of Planeswalkers in the new sets. As more sets are made, I think the pool of Planeswalkers will still be considerably large, but not as gigantic as it was in previous sets. Still leaving player who want to use these decks with options.

      its kinda flavorful though. Like, a planeswalker visits a plane for some reason or other, they become the story piece and "reason" for the set being on that specific plane.

    • @nerdwhosawtoomuch3511
      @nerdwhosawtoomuch3511 ปีที่แล้ว

      Agree. Planeswalkers are polarizing, but this is a little extreme. Like it or not, they are the corner piece of the game, and this action by the company is probably a bit of an overcorrection in the true issue which was the introduction of arguably way too many planeswalkers.
      Not just existing planeswalkers, but ones which more or less became a one note print. Having only one planeswalker per set will not work real well either. Not every planeswalker print that has come has seen a life outside of limited drafts or even standard. If the only planeswalker in a set going forward is kind of a bad card, then it would feel better that they never printed any period.

    One fun knock-on effect of a lot of planeswalkers losing their sparks is that, of those who remain, most are going to be planeswalkers who didn't put themselves on the line to fight Phyrexia, a.k.a, the villainous ones. We'll be getting a bumper crop of new, well new-ish, villains to generate conflicts, and it should be more interesting now that our desparked walkers aren't able to fight them as equals, but nominal inferiors.

      This is the most lukewarm take ever, i've already read 20 comments in here that claim this.
      It's also just dumb? nobody hates planeswalker because they can't be your commander in CEDH. And if you play at home or brawl on arena, nothing is stopping you from using them anyway. It's just such a backwards argument that ignores the piles and piles and piles of very real, factually provable issues with planeswalkers as game pieces to attack people for personal preferences.
      Let alone the massive issues people have with them as story telling devices. They are the hardest superhero marry sues to ever capeshit all over a good scifantasy backdrop and people on Ao3 would be ashamed to put characters like that into their stephen universe slashfics.

      @@JohnFromAccounting I have not experienced this in basically any form outside of the Commander community. Walker's just give you more deck building options. All this change does is limit your options by either COMPLETELY removing walkers from the format... or ENSURING that a very VERY small pool of walkers are REQUIRED. It's a bad way to do this. Better to remove walkers ENTIRELY than pull this '1 per set' limit. It was already the LEAST populous card type in 95% of de4cks with most decks running 1-4 walkers... whenever a set includes SAGAS.... there are instantly more saga's in the format than there are planeswalkers.
      I just find this to be a candy assed play at forcing extra legendary creatures on us to sell to commander players, RATHER than allow us to keep having fun building the kinds of decks that we want to build in contructed. Either get rid of them completely... or don't worry about it. From my perspective there wasn't anything broken about the Walkers to begin with, they'd basically stabalized in the metas with removal existing in measure to deal with them. There's nothing about this that doesn't just stink of 'we can sell more legendaries to commander... and the FEW walkers that now exist will all be MUST PULLS!' to sell more packs. It's BS.

    I feel like planeswalkers weren't that common in sets anyway as most sets only had about 2 in and the sets with multiple where usually big universe battle sets where it makes sense to have a lot of planeswalkers. I think a bigger issue is the massive increase in legendary creatures in every single set which has made the keyword less special. This is obviously due to the increase in commander popularity but I think it hurts the game more than it helps as no format is running all the terrible and draft trash uncommon and rare legendary creatures (including commander players) but if those cards were printed as regular creatures they may see some niche play in certain standard decks at least. Although this rule doesn't apply for universes beyond sets as obviously they will have lots of legendary creatures.

    Hopefully this plus the narrowed design mentioned in the last video will lead to a lot more interesting stories with a more varied cast rather than what we’ve had recently.
    Or they backtrack this quickly when the next threat arrives. *cough* Eldrazi *cough*
    Supplemental sets will probably contain loads of them now is my prediction or we get some new Desparked mechanic or creature type where the planeswalker versions can float into the creature on destruction. Similar to battles if we ever see those again

I like planeswalker stories and I like watching them evolve and change and take on new facets or return to their old roots. Tibalt got me into Kalheim just as one example. Switching them out to legendary creatures isn't going to fix the problems inherent to a fixed cast of characters that people eventually tire of. It just strikes me as weird that they are essentially getting rid of a card type. 1. Cool story with a new character
    2. I like new character in this story having to try and solve this problem
    3. They can’t solve it
    4. Find every planeswalker in the multiverse
    5. Watch the story unravel as it becomes a marvel movie
    6, repeat

    I think having the story after Aftermath be about the reduced amount of Planeswalkers leading to two Planeswalkers per plane essentially having a power grab.

    I wonder if restricting them to 1 per set will make them horrendously powerful.

  • @cis22

    I think they're going to try and return to the idea that planeswalkers are some of the most powerful beings in the Multiverse while still clinging to the post-Mending concept that planeswalkers are no longer god-like.
    So beings like Elspeth and Ugin would probably stay as planeswalkers because there is a lot more to them than just being above-average mages.

  • @Devininity
    @Devininity ปีที่แล้ว +10

    I'm glad that they're reducing the focus on Planeswalker cards for sure. Since canonically we're all supposed to be Planeswalkers it feel more fun thematically to sorta have your own spells win out in a way imo.
    However, as someone who loved making EDH/Commander decks and loves the format It's become a little depressing to see so many interesting ideas being funneled directly into "Pick your hero character". It feels like the decks that are coming out of that have both been great in that more players seem to be having an easier time deck building but also boring as everyone gravitates to the same few ideas more often than not with the WOW problem of types of play all being funneled into being more competitive happening alongside more streamlined legendary creatures.

    In a lot of ways, the reduction of planeswalkers feels like a return to how they were. We used to average about 1-2 walkers a set prior to the Gatewatch arc and moving to a two-set block. Before that, we would average 5-6 walkers over the course of a three-set block. I think the reduction will be good for the game and hopefully for the design of the planeswalkers themselves.

    I'm fine with them desparking some planeswalkers, as I do feel that the main story is a bit cluttered. On the other hand if they despark my boy Garruk ima lose it, they have done him so dirty over the last couple sets and to see him fall so far would be very disappointing

    I used to play a lot of standard when I was a teen and the creation of planeswalkers was actually one of my main reasons for quitting MTG. Simple but strong cards which are both very expensive and pretty much a must play in any deck for the planeswalkers color really took the fun out of it.
    At one point we even started playing Jace Beleren to kill opponents Jace the Mind Sculptor.
    Of course through the years the balance around planeswalkers has become better, but I never really enjoyed planeswalkers so I can't really say I'll be sad to see them leave

    • @lracseroom8286
      @lracseroom8286 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I quit competitive 1v1 MTG after Urza Block (discovered booze and girls) annd came back for EDH about 5 years ago.
      About two weeks ago me and some friends played with my Jumpstart cube. On the drive home someone said it was the most fun they had playing non-EDH Magic *in years*. I chimed in: "it's because of my 40 odd decks there is 1 Planeswalker" and a moment of realization came over the car as I said it.
      They started as a cheap gimmick to shift packs and it got WAY out of hand and (not an opinion) the game is actively worse for it.

    I feel like "having the planeswalkers take the back seat" was telegraphed. I also think it was a huge swing-and-a-miss for the Compleated Weatherlight to exist and not have Melira "de-compleat" it and have a ragtag group of heroes charge across the multiverse stamping out a decentralized phyrexian force. I have no way to back up this claim, but it was a glaringly obvious plot point that I think it was scrapped so that we didn't have another Dominaria/Ravnica plane that we end up revisiting bi-annually for 15 years each. Depending on where the weatherlight is, and whether the weatherlight weathered the withering effects of de-completion (meaning it can be salvaged and reengineered by someone), they'll use it to tie off the "look-at-all-these-safe-to-traverse-planar-portals" storyline.

    Having extra 'walkers in ONE means the number of planeswalkers in standard is high now and will become closer to the normal amount as the only one per set change takes effect. This means in a few years they'll have time to work on one-planeswalker sets for a while without having the change in standard abruptly

    I'd love to see a limit of 1 planeswalker per set. Lore-wise, it's an extremely rare ability, which certainly hasn't been reflected in the sets through the past. They should be super-powerful cards, and rare enough that it really feels special when you get one.

    Totally feel that comparison with commanders to fighting game characters. I used to play competitive fighting games a while before I returned to Magic. When I did return commander was brand new and it was the immediate comparison that came to my mind too. I will main Gitrog Monster even if there's better options now, that graveyard trigger is just too much for me to pass up. It's kind of like a devotion to a mid-tier character in Street Fighter (even if Gitrog is still pretty nutty).

    It also makes it easier to build decks centered around those characters, when they can actually be your commander. Sure, oathbreaker does this, but it's only 60 cards in the deck so you have to cut more stuff.

      I liked the Lorwynn/Alara ones. They stayed low power enough that they didn't become must includes if you palyed that colour. It wasn't until we hit Zendikar we really started getting the broken walkers that ruined the meta.
      I stopped buying cards after Dragon's MAze and have actually been proxying cards from newer sets in the old card style and power them down (Basically Alchemy balancing). I still have the planeswalkers, but I made them a lot less powerful and my friends seem to be having way more fun with them. The walkers are pretty much all balanced around the Lorwynn 5/Alara 4 (Not Bolas)

    I've been in MTG for about a year and I'm kinda alright with how things are with the number of legendary creatures or Planeswalkers. I like going to commander night and playing against a commander I have never heard of or seen before.
    I like going wild with a commander that no one gave the time of day to. Almost all of my decks have a commander who is pennies because everyone wants Korvold, Winota, Jodah, Omnath, Kenrith, Myrrim, insert overplayed commander here, etc.
    If WOTC wants to reduce these numbers then I guess we all will have to go with it, but I will always be an advocate for more choices of commanders than going to my local game store and seeing a pod of 4 Teysa Karlovs and seeing which one can out death trigger the others.

    I think this change is also really good because many planewalker are not very good. There are many who are Oko, Threeferi, Ashiok dream render, Narset parter of veils but also many that are just bad and see no play at all across all formats. Balancing planewalkers seems to be really hard because they either end up busted or unplayable with only a few falling in between those extremes. And when it's already this hard to balance them it's even harder If you have to do it 3 to 5 times per set. Maybe this change will result in much more mid to high power planewalkers that are not busted or unfun to play against.
