    Shooting with an R5C and a 24-70 with no optical IS -- and using only digital IS -- I've gotten great results by a few things mentioned in the video: 1) add functional weight to the camera (monitor, battery, shotgun mic, etc), 2) use a left side grip WITH THE GRIP POSITIONED FARTHER forward towards the front of the lens instead of parallel to the camera body like most people do, 3) use hand straps for the left grip and right side camera grip so the weight of the camera rests on your hands which disperses the weight to your arms instead of you having to clench it, and 4) figure out how to get a 3rd point of contact from the rear of the camera. For bigger cinema-ish cameras with rear v-mount batteries, this is usually their 3rd point of contact ... but when using these smaller cameras, I just attach a quick release small tripod (like you'd get with a DJI RS3 or whatever) pointing back towards my body to use as the 3rd point of contact. I can go for hours and still having the camera in a small package. Wish someone would've told me all that years ago! Good luck.
    Honestly, I can get it pretty dang stable with NO rig and no grips and just that 3 point of contact mounted under the camera pointing back and braced somewhere on my body (hip, stomach, chest, shoulder even) while still keeping a small package. Holding small-ish cameras with two hands (2 points of contact) out in front of you is just about as shaky as you'll get, especially as fatigue kicks in ... especially if shooting with a 70-200mm goodness gracious!

    Very well said! This video reminds me of an experience I've had that's completely off-topic, but I still want to throw it out there😂. I've built several drones --- quadcopters, hexacopters, etc --- before I finally decided that hacking a GoPro 5 onto an awkward, huge drone was too much of a hustle, and decided to buy a DJI Mavic pro. However, even though the shot I was getting got way smoother, has better image quality, and not to mention the drone was WAY easier to fly than my old Home-built one, I just didn't like the image I created as much as I used to. It felt hollow and without weight. I couldn't point my finger on what's different, I'm still thinking it might have something to do with the weight of the drones and how they move through air, but what I've learned is that magic happens when you put in A LOT of work and then get the result you wanted, versus using a very easy-to-use camera that solves all the issue for you and you can not pay as much attention and still get relatively good results. idk..

      Totally get you. I'm shooting a lot with Canon lenses at the moment. The autofocus is great for interviews. But manual focus is not the same as a fully manual lens with hard stops. I can tell I'm not shooting the broll quite the same as I did with my old manual 50 and 35 Zeiss ZF's. Sure I didn't nail focus all the time, but I'd be able to create some special moments.

      @@AlucinorProductions I totally agree! And I feel what you said about getting stable image from a heavy camera vs. IBIS, too.

      Yep. I’ve put more weight on the c70 now with a smallrig cage, zacuto VCTpro baseplate and trigger grip plus EVF. Shots are much smoother

    Thats an interesting approach 🤔🤔

    I usually dont turn on the camera IS due to the lost of pixels and the lack of sharpness of the video so I only rely on the lens IS for stablization. I will only turn on the camera IS if the lens does not provide any OIS. There are times when I needed the gimbal for work, I will turn off all the IS both on camera and lens.

    • @AlucinorProductions
      @AlucinorProductions  ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah agreed! With gimbal best to turn other stabilisation off

    sony tried to lure me back. but canon's r5 r5c dont crop their video modes. ERGO is way better on canon. look forward to seeing the #canon #R5mII.

      I'm pretty pumped about the c200 mkii rumours. I never owned a C200 but used it a few times and really liked it. If it's got the C70/c300 sensor as rumoured but has a more gimbal friendly design, SDI, Full XLR and ALL-I 120p (one can dream) that thing is gonna fly off the shelves but would also potentially be the death warrant for the C300mkiii. But considering the c300mkiii was announced in April 2020 I think Canon would be feeling perfectly okay cannibalising their own line now. The majority of the c300mkiii sales have been made I would assume.... You're right r5 mkii looks great on specs!

    Curious if you do corporate work isn't a gimbal more ideal? I have colleagues who do amazing work with shoulder and handheld rigs.

    • @AlucinorProductions
      @AlucinorProductions  ปีที่แล้ว

      It completely depends on the video. I personally shoot handheld most of the time. I find too much gimbal a bit much. Great shots lose impact. However when used appropriately they really sing

    Hey there, great video! Wondering which lenses you were using for the lens IS test? I've been finding theres quite a difference between Canon RF and EF when it comes to how the stabilization performs when coupled with the in body stabilization. Sometimes I even kinda feel like the EF has a more natural "hand held" looks, vs the RF is like you said, almost too stable at times...

    • @AlucinorProductions
      @AlucinorProductions  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      These were all RF lenses. Mostly the 70-200. Lately I've been doing a bit of shooting with the Canon Speedbooster on the C70 and shooting on the Sigma Art 24-70 for Broll. That has lens IS. Has made slow-mo Broll pretty damn smooth, although to be honest I don't really need stabilization when shooting 100fps :-) It's certainly an improvement for on speed work. We just have digital stabilization permanently off now

      R5c shooting 8k raw (so I can punch in). I think this was the Sigma Art 35mm wide open… waiting on that RF 35mm still

    Hi just moved over to Canon R5C from Blackmagic and Sony cameras. What mode were the final pool shots taken at? Have you tried any sort of combination of Digital IS and stabilisation in Davinci to get rid of the jitters? Am myself trying to work when I can shoot handheld on this camera and when it needs to be rigged on a gimbal. Just before I moved over we started to get nice results with handheld BMPCC 6k pro and gyro stabilisation in post, am looking for that sort of option on the R5C

    • @AlucinorProductions
      @AlucinorProductions  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey mate, yeah that gyro stabilisation is great! We have kept out 6k pro but it's not seeing heaps of use. My preferred option if any additional stabilisation is required is to do it in post. I just find the digital IS jarring and distracting too often to use. The very final pool shots (last 3 right at end) were on Alexa at 120p I think... just capturing the kids first time in the new pool... I find r5c handheld is all about weighting it well for how u hold it and shoot but tbh it spends lots of time on a gimbal (Shane operating) while I'm more often handheld on the c70. Shooting off shoulder with an evf does wonders for natural stable shots

      How are you finding the move so far? Color, post workflow etc

    • @joshhphoto
      @joshhphoto ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@AlucinorProductions The move was to downscale to one camera for everything so its easier to travel with and I shoot a lot of stills and autofocus with video will be very welcome. So far, probably like with any change, i solved one major issue and created a bunch of new ones. I’ll keep playing but so far i agree that its hard to beat Blackmagic and its BRAW files and working with them
