Even with the technical mishap, you still managed to tell a compelling story. Cutting in that clip from Empire of the Sun was just perfect!

That mp4 clip probably just has a bad header. QT won't look past the beginning of the file if something is damaged, but the footage is probably there. You'd need a utility to convert or repair mp4 files.

Had the same problem with my footage a couple of days ago, same camera. Only mine was dropped so one file was corrupted, looked the same as yours though. After hours of research I caved in and paid for a program to repair the file which actually worked and brought the footage back. So no more problems with corrupt footage thankfully

A man and his truck. Few will understand the bond of a man with his machine, a machine that will take a man anywhere he wants to go, day in and day out. And when that machine is simple, reliable and can be fixed by his own hand it's hard to put a price on it.

When I saw the first part in the series, it actually triggered something on me wondering what was so great about owning a vintage truck. In 2 months, I found myself buying a 22 year old Land Cruiser 95 Prado, which has been the wonders of the family ever since. Good for going anywhere, do-anything don't-bother, carrying 2 gravel bikes, sleeping inside, and not having to worry about any condition on the road. It had 2 visit the specialist a couple of times, but mechanically you can tell it's bullet proof. Best Car I've ever owned. Period.

I feel very represented with this video, I own a 1982 Citroën 2CV (the car of my dreams) and a few months ago I had to pay for a full engine reconstruction. It was expensive and very few people understood why I did it. The love I have for this little french car, how I feel when driving it... All this is absolutely priceless. It amazes me how cars can make people so happy.

Van, I had your video booted up but suddenly got a strange itch to fix something - something right in front of my eyes - with my hands first. So I did that and then watched your video.
I kind of like the idea, every time Van uploads a video I should make myself fix something with my hands first before watching it. But on the other hand, the fact that I would naturally get the urge to do so anyway was pretty darn reassuring.

I've owned my 60 series for 28 years and do not plan on getting rid of it ever!! I love it so much that it was stolen, ended up 1000 miles away cost me a small fortune to recover it and another small fortune to get it back into safe operation and some people think I'm crazy. Once a Land Cruiser owner, always a Land Cruiser owner. I have been entertaining the idea of another small fortune for the 2.8 swap.

This is like a mix of mine and my dad's story, 2 in 1!❤️
Back in 2007 my dad bought a 3rd gen Nissan Pathfinder, 4000cc v6. Compared to my moms car, a nissan micra 1200cc, that SUV is like it's been pulled out from mad max. My dad used to ride it, in my eyes, like he owned it. A beast that he conquered and lead us into places I had never seen before, an adventure into other worlds! It was in my eyes so unusual, fast as hell (in the eyes of a 5 yo), automatic transmission, heated seats, sunroof, palace like interior etc.
My dad also taught me how to drive it when I was just 8 y/o!
In 2015 several years after the economic collapse of Greece , costs of having it running became too much in comparison to its use for us,I was 13 yo at the time.
Time passed, my dad grew older but still hardcore in his athletic spirit and now in his 69 years of life a massive stroke of luck lead to spirits lifted and a lost wallet with 9 months of savings for the car was found!
My dad was rejuvenated tremendously and I was seeing a legend from another time, when my parents had more life into and opportunities in their hands, come back into life. It is like a time treasure from 2007, and in it we found hope, strength, rejuvenated spirits and a crystal clear view of the past.
Yesterday I just came back home, closing my 1st trip with it, now 20 yo!

This was my first day of viewing your channel. December 15th we were in Bozeman having driven our 2006 Lx470 from Sharlton Washington. We had time to kill and stumbled apon the shop you used for your engine swap. I thought I had arrived in Valhalla. Not that we needed any work done, but just to see and learn about the noble work they do keep the vintage fleet on the road. Having pursued a vintage car dream in a 1990 vanagon my days of mechanical Russian roulette motivated the move to a land cruiser. This was not our first trip but it was the biggest winter trip we had attempted. With brand new open country tires and gas at $2.60 I felt invincible to the blizzard conditions that Yellowstone thru at us. Congratulations on your new engine and I look forward to seeing how you use the rig.

I wish I could show this video to my dad. He would have loved to see this beauty revitalized. We used to have an ‘85 for many years. First it was my dads daily driver, then his weekend/hunting truck. Then it was my brothers. Eventually, it was passed down to me and became my first vehicle.
It was my daily driver for a couple years until we also had an overheating problem. After it left me stranded a few times we decided to sell it, but my dad and I came to regret years later.
Love spotting them out in the wild. It’s a nice little reminder of the weekends and trips my dad and I spent in it. Hopefully you and your son can create some core memories with yours that he will remember for the rest of his life.
Congrats on the restore. I hope the new engine treats you well for many years.

When I was 24 I spent six months with one film. It was my rule at the time to only take one picture of each event or activity. That film spanned the first festival of the season, slowly moving and farm handing my way south from Canada until I found myself living in an abandoned building in Mexico with a group of literal clowns. When I got back to Canada I sent the film to the drugstore to be developed and it exploded their machine. That film, the most meaningful film I ever took, cost the drugstore $5,000.
Some things are too beautiful to be cheapened with immortality. Some things are just for you.

The rundown of the mod list was so well done - this truck seems like it can take on anything now! I had to laugh/cry at the moment of unveil of what happened with the sony file, we’ve all been there but to do it on THE clip of your joyous reaction of your inner child coming out, foul play Sony. They should recreate another inner child moment and make sure it’s captured from multiple sources. Long live the FJ and here’s to hopefully owning that e30 M3 one day! If you ever want to make an episode with my e46 M3, let me know

I love how much you love this truck. I've had three trucks, 2 Toyotas & 1 Ford F-150. I've had a Honda Civic, I've had two Toyota Prius, I've had a Ford E-350 van. I have a RAV4 now. But none of them have I loved as much as you love this Land Cruiser. It's inspirational. I miss my F-150, but not that gas mileage. And now I want the F-150 Lightning or a Rivian. Even after I get my dream truck, I still won't have that same love I see in your videos. Congrats on the new guts of your Toyota!

I always loved the 80 series Landcruisers. When I was 12 or 13 my dad and I drove to the Outerbanks in a ‘94 FJ80 with a quarter of a million miles on it. It was a hot summer and you had to keep the windows down because the AC didn’t work and the cabin smelled strongly of gas. When it rained we opened the sun roof because at least it would cool us off. Sure, she slipped a gear every once in a while but never left us stranded.

If you happen to still have the original SD card with the original video clip that was corrupted, then you might be able to get a good working copy using a Data Recovery software like PhotoRec by CGSecurity(It's free software). PhotoRec has been around for decades(they even have a DOS compatible version), I have used that software to recover a lot of files from SD cards that cameras have somehow messed up. It also works for more mundane file recovery(like accidental file deletion) from Hard drives and USB sticks.

Working on the railway as an apprentice signal technician in then Rhodesia, now Zimbabwe, we were given a Land Rover to travel the Bush roads, that thing broke down virtually every week. Later we were given a Land Cruiser FJ 45 which never missed a beat and could out perform the LR in every way despite being burdened with the added weight mine proofing, my dream wes to one day own my own Land Cruiser despite all odds.
My dream became a reality, in fact there was a progression through many models starting with a BJ 40 then HJ 45, BJ70, BJ 60, BJ 71 and finally a HJ61, the last two JDM imported into Canada. They were all fantastic but the 71 and 61 were outstanding being fully loaded examples with turbo direct injection, suspension seats, locking diffs, floating axle, PTO winch, power everything and many other extras.
All were sold for a profit, the HJ 61 I kept for 10 years, it was a first model January 1987 built, sold to someone in the US in 2012 for more than 3 time what I paid for it and likely the first to be imported there. Would have kept it but importing to Thailand, where I now reside would be cost prohibitive due to import duties, the sale did allow the purchase of a new Mitsubishi Triton diesel pick up, but I do miss that HJ61 6 cylinder.
Additionally I did have a piece of crap Sony camera which failed in a similar manner.

Van, you are definitely the best storyteller I’ve ever seen! Keep up the good work! 👍

I had all my camera gear stolen in Portland last year, including the Sony ZV-1 I bought for that trip. Now knowing that the camera sucks, this video has brought me a sense of resolution. Thanks, Van.

Very good sound capture on the bass growl of the diesel; inner child vibrations all the way

Congrats, what a dream! I couldn't help but notice at 4:13 in the video it looks like there is a crack in your wheel. Just a heads up, would hate for something bad to happen while you were driving.

This is the funniest thing I've ever read, I drove one as my first car as a hand-me-down car that was a 1980 240dl, what a beast and what a laundry list of problems and issues, it definitely spent more time in the shop than on the road, so good luck

@@helpfulcommenter Ha! They are pretty reliable cars. Their worst problem is rust. Otherwise it runs great. Love it for simplicity and practicality.

can relate. I had a 1977 International Scout SSII That I'd love to have back in my life. Then I had a 1982 Suzuki SJ410L. unfortunately, the memories of the old vehicles are shinier than reality. My current "new" car is 16 years old :)

To transform a man into a child, Toyota does everything possible with a Landcruiser. Greetings from a LC 78 from Germany.

Had to sell my old silver 4Runner a few weeks ago, rust and gas mileage had made it a liability. I remember when I first started watching these videos how much I related to your relationship with your old Toyota. Hopefully one day I can regain that feeling, but I’m very glad to see that you managed to make that childhood dream come true. One day, Van. One day I will too.

Mega sorted the truck, I’m slowly doing up a old truck (ranger, Uk 🇬🇧).
So called camera technology can sometimes suck big time.
    Happy adventures and all that.

Well now I miss my 60 again, I only had it for about 2 months but it is the car I regret selling the second most and every time I see a 60, in video or on the road I get sad that I had to let it go. but such is life, sometimes somethings are more important that keeping a car one had craved for years and years.
Enjoy the 60 with the new heart, I am sure it still kept its soul and will make many memories for you and all the family.

Sorry about the missed opportunity for the most important shot of all! F**k you, Sony! I really enjoyed the last shot from the drone and you driving off into the fog.
