There are people there helping now, they had to wait until the storm passed before they could start sending the ships and aircraft to help, and the damn storm stayed in one place for a couple of days and then moved off very slow. Such a sad thing knowing so many have died and all the others lost everything they had. It will take many years to rebuild.

I saw some organizations collecting money where I live. I told them they need to collect food , water ,clothes , first aide supplies etc. People are afraid to give money that may not be put to use towards the Bahamas. A lot of con artists take chances during times like these to run schemes.

Wendy, Bahamas doesn't have an army. I don't know about the other things you mentioned. I vacationed there 20 years ago, our stuff was stolen off the beach as we swam, beach clothes weren't allowed to be worn walking around town. I almost got arrested for walking with 1 shoe & a bathing suit AFTER being robbed. It was a beautiful place visually. Now it's a wasteland. Definitely no one going to vacation there for years. Planted palms & greenery it will look fake, Like Las Vegas. So sad for all the people and animals who lost their lives. Prayers for their families. Where are the pets? I don't see any cats or dogs walking around in any of the news reports I've seen. Hopefully some organization is rescuing the animals. I know people are being rescued.

I know the feeling! I was in Puerto Rico for hurricane Maria. No lights, water, food, gas, store, banks closed, atms not working! One whole year without electricity or water! Expect the same thing in the Bahamas!

These islands will not be without electricity for a year. I am a Bahamian i am from the other island that was affected Grand Bahama. The government has not abandoned us . The tragedy is this catastrophe is beyond anything that we could have imagined. This is a steep learning curve. I am by no means attacking the victims of this storm for their frustration. I am with them with that and my heart breaks daily looking at our homes, the scale of the death and loss. Another challenge is that is that in Abaco their are small towns that are separated after the hurricane it is difficult to get to smaller settlements diffMy family is so blessed we have another home as well as family on other islands. Puerto Rico has a more complicated challenge to add to the catastrophe they suffered. The problems with their electric grid was a legacy problem that was neglected for some time. And the current occupant of the White House is not the most compassionate of leaders. I am so grateful to the international community for their love support donations this is going to be long and hard. Those of us who have more resources are looking for ways to help at times an individual or church or civic organization will be more effective than our government. But that is not because they do not care . Thank you so much to our fellow islands in the Caribbean our neighbors to the north the US ,Canada and to the UK who is also assisting. We have rebuilt before. The real time to criticize our government will be after some of dust has cleared will their build shelters that can withstand storm of this immensity, will they implement better evacuation laws so that they can force residents to leave. The Bahamas has. 700 island we are scattered across 22 of them some islands only have 100 people and our islands are very small. Sadly we know that these storms are no longer once in a lifetime, this can happen again. If the path of the storm goes across the entire chain of our islands where can we evacuate to. The highest point in this country is 126ft. I’m sorry I realize that i am rambling it’s been a harrowing few days i’m tired but never losing hope. We are rebuilding yes it will take time but FORWARD UPWARD ONWARD TOGETHER that is our country’s motto btw God Bless 🇧🇸

Juls, there was barely any aide for the victims of hurricane Katrina! Red cross got millions in donations, I saw a documentary on it years ago at the time only SIX houses had been built with the money donated! As a general rule only ten cents of every dollar people donate goes to the actual needs. That figure I got from a news documentary who went under cover investigating charities. The important point is don't expect anyone to rescue or help after a disaster, prepare your own stash of emergency supplies, food etc. Looks to me like those shipping containers held up the best. If I were to live on an island I'd heavely pad the inside of one to use as a shelter in an emergency.
puzzle peaces, oh, I’m well aware of certain “charities” that line their pockets with our donations. Tell me something. Have you lived through a hurricane? One where it broke the roads in half, power went out on the entire island. Even if you survived you had no place to go. We were sure our government, since we are Americans would swiftly send help. You know who really helped??? Other countries and locals. So please excuse me if your pathetic metal box solution doesn’t resonate with me, beca even if they all had these containers they still wouldn’t have the basic, fundamental, needs.
Where is the UK?? They collect taxes and a lot of revenue from Bahamas. They need to go help their people.
its so sad, but you must understand the governments should have prepared for this, sooner or later they were in place for something like this to happen, responsibility happens with each individual, the building codes, the safe places, yet they continue to build makeshift structures in a place that a hurricane would surely come sooner or later and wash everything away... just like new orleans, you have a city continuing to build in a place that is already below sea level. on top of that the hospitals have generators in basements of the city... now you have flood water and flooded basements... where is the common sence, who built thses places, what was on their minds,
how stupid can a state or community build, would you build on a volcano? why would you build in a flood zone, the common sence of this country seems to have vanished

The Bahama's are there own country, so, I know its hard but maybe start doing something instead of just asking everyone else to do it for you? I know it's a dire situation, but it is your own land, start small and get together and start with a plan. Are there no engineers or construction people who are bahamian's? Where are the Govt people of the Bahama's letting their people know how to get their money from the banks or supplies? The sooner they start the faster things will get better. People *are* coming and have come to help. The issue is--understandably--that expectations are beyond realistic possibilities. The airports and docks are destroyed. And even if you get to land, the roads are impassable. Because of this, it takes TIME to get to everyone. Communications are down. This is why everyone hears different/wrong info as the one lady described. So they are understandably frustrated, but it is NOT true that no one is coming to help. The harsh reality is destruction this bad makes it take time for the help to get there.
I'm sorry but the streets of Joplin Missouri were cleared of debri within a few days. We have the resources and the technology to get it done and that is the sad truth that many people understand.
