I'm currently in a similar position. I have 2 completely blown closures and one that is leaking. New ones are almost 500 frigging bucks. Glad I found this video. Thank you.
Great information, thanks for sharing! I work maintenance at Detroit Metro Airport and we go through lots of these exact closers. Always thought it was a huge waste throwing them out. Maybe we can start a program to refurbish them. Thanks again!
Thanks for sharing your experience with rebuilding this closer, I rebuild closers as well and struggling to find a proper pipe plug wrench (for the square hole end plug you used a bolt with) they do have more o rings but they are around the valves. Now about that oil you used, be careful with Bars leaks fluids, they have additives that can swell the o ring and could cause damage, it is safer to use conventional motor oil or GM power steering fluid. Feel free to ask any questions on closers if you have a question/concern. -Jess the Door Closer Doctor
@@jesustapia1643no you do not need to take the closer apart to refill after some fluid came out of valve, depending on style of closer depends on how best to refill it, what brand and series are you dealing with?? -Jess the Door Closer Doctor
The text during the video made me LOL 🙂And this video has given me some confidence it trying to rebuild these. I have one in my bldg that's been discontinued. They have a replacement that should fit the bracket, but their like 500 bucks. In retrospect, did you have to take it all apart or just replace that o-ring? Mine is leaking as well. Thanks for this video.
You might have to disassemble most of it just to get to the one o-ring 😞 either way I would drain it out and put new oil in since you’re going through the trouble… someone commented to use 10W-30 not Jack oil, that seems to work nicely. Good luck!
Curious, how quickly you feel you could rebuild the next one? Obviously, there's a learning curve and custom tool manufacturing for the first one but would you do it again and how quickly do you feel you could do the next one?
I actually did tear it back down after the other comment here about the oil that I used in the video. It probably took all of a half hour or less with the tools and know-how. Switched oil to a regular 10W-30. Has been working great and no leaks since!
That is NOT an LCN closer. Anyone that knows commercial door hardware could see that. Sadly, there are a bunch of imported knock off closers that scam people regularly. In my experience, if you contact LCN customer service, they will take care of you....IF it's a real LCN Closer!
Nowadays yes, but not this old one, back then it was 10 and the warranty was well over by time this video was made, The last of the square end plug LCN closers were made in 1974, so that makes the warranty end in 1984, On 1985, LCN started to use the internal hex shaped plugs

You would have to talk to maintenance manager on that, closest rebuilder to Detroit that I know of is F.W Kline in IL
My friend u never mentioned what size socket you used ?????

Thanks for the kind words and advice! What weight motor oil would you recommend? I’ll have to pull it down and do an oil change 😂
@@andrewh.5216 I used 10w30, (I drive an old Buick) but I have done 5w30 as well) not knowing the state you are in, probably best to do 10w30
Do I have to take the closer apart it the removed an adjustment screw and the oil leaked?

any merit to use teflon tape to help seal?
Not a bad idea, I’d give it a try… Make sure to use PTFE tape

Im about to do this.
LCN closers have a 30 year warranty. Don’t be stupid!
😂😂 you’re funny!

Is the warranty good evening if someone backed out the adjustment screw all the way out?
