    Thanks! I decided to get Cintiq 27QHD Touch instead of the Studio after your advice. I will enjoy watching what happens with the later Studio releases. For my laptop, I waited until the Surface Pro 4. It was hard waiting when the first ones came out but I find, as you stated, it is worth it to wait sometimes.

    The next version of Surface Studio needs to have the followings: the same screen (if can be better, but doubtful), Kaby Lake CPU, nVidia 10 series GPUs, up to 32GB DDR4, primary M.2 SSD, secondary 2.5" SATA drive bay, multiple thunderbolt 3 ports, side-insert SD slot. In short, the base model should be at least more powerful than a mid-level Surface Book of the same generation.

    I have a 240gb ssd with a 3t drive. Its actually fine. Your main program files go on the ssd and your media files go on the hardriver. The storage doesn't impact performance.

  • @64jcl
    @64jcl 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    Totally agree with the specs. The $3k price point should have a 256 GB SSD, an i7 and at least 8GB memory by default. As for the screen, a decent Nvidia chipset should be able to run a lot of high res 2D layers with no problems. But even the GPU type is optional which bewilders me a bit as you wouldnt really use this thing for gaming, although perhaps 3D design is possibly why they have this optional powerful GPU. All in all, way to expensive for what you get imo.

    Christ man, a hybrid drive? I would assemble a killer machine for that money, if the trick is just the screen look for alternatives

  • @greyareaRK1
    @greyareaRK1 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I came to the same conclusion. A lot of reviews have been decidedly clumsy; a failure to grok its nature. However, the old CPU/GPU, lack of lightning ports etc, makes it too daunting without more money coming in the door. I also still feel stung by my Surface Pro 3 (which was also promoted by reviewers as the 'Surface is now perfect'). Hopefully the design/production cycle on version 2 will be much shorter. First I heard about the Wacom deal - that will be awesome.

    The Surface Studio is really expensive... and since I already have a good PC it's kind of pointless to buy another one. But what about the Dell Canvas? It seems to be some kind of Cintiq? Maybe you could tell us your opinion? :)

    definitely in the camp of loving the idea when it came back and cooling off. I want to see what MS is gonna do with the surface pen. At that price with the lack of upgrade-ability, i'm not sure that's something i can commit to when even Huion pens have more fidelity (same wobble tho). Waiting for Gen 2.

    • @KuttyJoe
      @KuttyJoe 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I agree. And the lack of customization of the button(s) is a big minus. Microsoft should be ashamed of itself for shipping a poor quality stylus like that with a "premium", flagship device.

  • @MrElectrifyer
    @MrElectrifyer 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    100% agreed! I too was disappointed that the storage of such an expensive device wasn't at least a full MSATA SSD. Also, it's lacking Thunderbolt 3 USB Type C inputs (which would have served a lot of purposes, including using it as an input display or using external GPUs with it), and the issue you long ago reported with the Surface Pro 3 pen still persists till today on this expensive machine. Even when you take into consideration that it's competing with other high-end tablets like the Wacom Cintiq 27 HD Touch (2560x1440 vs 4500x3000 in the Studio), which is $2800 for just the lower resolution screen alone ( us-store.wacom.com/Product/Cintiq-27QHD-S01#/undefined1 ), it's still tough to swallow the fact that you'll have to be using such great screen with low-end computing hardware as there's no way to use it as just a display alone like the Cintiq 27 HD Touch.
    Here's hoping the Surface Studio 2 fixes all of the above, or at least the pen issue dating back to the Surface Pro 3 and adds support for being used as just a digitizer display for a separate PC.

    As for the hybrid drive, you're actually quite wrong in suggesting they are two drives. They're not. The a single two-in-one drive, where Windows can move data to the slower part of it based on which programs are most often used. It is incorrect to suggest you do not get a significantly faster harddisk when comparing a hybrid to an old 5400 rpm drive. I dare say you're going to get better speeds than 7500 rpm drive. You have to keep in mind the iMac has had Fusion drives for years now and the concept works great, if not FLAWLESS. You're not going to notice the 5400 rpm disk, because most runtimes you regularly use are going to be on the faster drive part.
    I too think the Surface Studio doesn't quite feature the kind of high-end hardware I would expect from it's price tag. Yes, I'm sure the touchscreen is the most expensive part, but I would consider the high-end 27" iMac over the Surface Studio when it comes to the hardware at this point in time. I don't get one of the Surface Studio models features the GTX965m card. I understand the parts are shrunken down to fit in where ever place they are in the Studio, but a machine of this nature needs a very beefy GPU, plenty of RAM and a great CPU. At the end of the day, what use is a 4K screen when it barely has the power to do 4K stuff on it?

  • @Locutus

    Like you said, product development times are long, and I believe Microsoft had been planning the SS for a year or two prior to launch, hence its "low spec". It's best to take a gamble on existing hardware, that's been proven, then to go whole hog and put the latest and greatest in. iPhone is a great example. The original iPhone Apple had standard "off the shelf components", and now over the years, Apple has designed more proprietary hardware, and gone for the latest in hardware.
    Same will happen with the SS, if it's still here in 5 years, with regular refreshes, then we will see a much more, refined product.
    But I agree with you about the hard drives. For a machine like that to have hybrid/dual drives, is silly. That puts me off a lot. But, hopefully (that's a big ask), the SS2 will have proper SSDs. Once you have SSDs in there, the $3000 price tag becomes more justifable.
    Your thoughts in the video about the SS, were very fair, and the "criticisms" were very fair.

    yah we shd wait.. its like the RT wch was one of a kind that time so i bought one. then the next gen just got a lot better! then the 3rd came, then the 4th came! BIG BIG difrence in innovation! :) and we shd see how Wacom will respond to the competition. cz that's the time when price gets a bit lower and power gets better! :) i wud also wait for Surface to consider cpu/gfx amplifiers, somthing like Surface book, the monitor can be detached and when you attach it to the main hardware the power is amplified or something :) it's gonna be exciting! (and no one is talking about Macs anymore like the previous years hihihihi) ..and yes! the first thing i was looking for when i purchased an SP3 was a wacom pen, i thot they hav some compatible ones so may wacom consider some sharing.. :) great content Brad! :)

    I got lucky and got one of the top units on Jan, 5th. Love the machine for my photo editing. For video I put my file on a high speed USB SSD drive and it runs great. I did go into the machine with the thought that I would like to get two years, sell and upgrade to what ever is out then. For me it was ether this or an iMac with Cintiq. The Mac/Cintiq combo came out to over $5300 so decided to got with the Studio. Also I love my SP4 and figured I would like the Studio. For moving it on the desk to edit I did put 4 felt pads on the bottom so it slides well. I do work at an electric stand up desk so can set the hight to the perfect place for comfort and find it incredibly comfortable to work at. If I had to wait all the way till the end of April I am not sure I would still go with it. If I waited that long I might just wait for version 2.

    • @thebradcolbow
      @thebradcolbow  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I like the felt pads idea. In the short time I used it I liked how it was positioned both up and down. But I might like a little further back when not drawing.

    • @fbicking
      @fbicking 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      After a month of use I would have to completely agree with you on the position thing. When I am using it as a regular machine I have to move it back. One thing I do love is the flexibility of the angle. My art desk is at 36 degrees and I have used that angle since I was a kid. At 44 I am just use to it now. I love just putting the screen at that angle and going to town editing or drawing.

    actually, I think a classic 7,200 rpm HDD is not bad. If you use a SSD you are running the risk of losing all your data when that thing stops working... and that happens more often on a SSD than a high-end HDD. I rather have an external SSD for work, and use the HDD as back-up...

    Most windows graphic workstations start at $5k for a plain jane black box full of processors and a pretty mean video card. they also use duel drives. SSD to run operating system and programs and sata to hold everything else. working on 3D renderings and large photoshop composites I never had a problem. Yeah it's slower to save the file, but overall performance doesn't take a hit to the extent that it was noticeable. I am skeptical that when you look at the prices of standard graphics workstations and things like surface books, one would expect the surface studio should be around $5k or more......

    • @ToastAndJellyfish
      @ToastAndJellyfish 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      You're better off with the Wacom, anyway. Microsoft still hasn't fixed the jitter issue that they inflicted on their users when they ditched Wacom digitizers for NTrig (and my understanding is that it's an inherent hardware issue, so they probably aren't going to be fixing it anytime soon), so you're getting a more accurate drawing experience with the Cintiq. And isn't that what it's all about, in the end?

    • @azzart979
      @azzart979 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      ToastAndJellyfish uhm, personally I don't care much about the jitter. I mean, yes I know it's there but it's something I hardly bother while drawing. Let's say it's something more noticeable when working on a small 12" screen because it doesn't allow you to do full arm swipes like a 20-28". I find more concerning initial activation force or input lag if I have to find something potentially bothersome. One thing that's present on the Cintiq 27 that I didn't notice on the Cintiq Companion though is cursor offset nearing the borders and parallax effect which makes it impossible to have the pen perfectly calibrated around the whole screen. Add the fact the resolution on the 27 is pretty lame for such a big display and we probably have a draw. Both have pros and cons: Wacom has a better pen, almost no jitter and the display can be mounted on an arm and rotated vertically, Microsoft better display, more accurate pen positioning and a far smaller footprint. Overall the only thing that I find advantageous on the Cintiq is the ability to work in portrait mode which is very useful while working on single page illustrations. :)

    • @KuttyJoe
      @KuttyJoe 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's true about the problem around the edges of the screen with the Cintiqs, and in fact all Wacom supplied devices. I have a Cintiq 27QHD and it also has this problem. Of course though, because the screen is so big, I hardly ever find myself out to the edges of the screen, except hitting the X to close programs. But when I had a 12" tablet PC, it was a nightmare of missed clicks.
      Still though, it's a far experience than the Surface Studio. I can lock the screen into any angle that suits me. I never work at 22 degree angle of the Surface Studio. And the base on the Surface Studio is too light to stabilize the machine. I went to lower the screen in the Microsoft store and nearly pushed the thing over on the floor. That won't happen with the Cintiq. The base weighs like a million pounds. It's heavier than the Cintiq. The whole thing is so big and heavy that you could hop up on the deskt and sit on it! LOL. Just kidding, but yeah, it's really stable. And that's what you need if you're spending a ton of time drawing on the screen. With the Surface Studio, you need to have a stack of books handy to prop it up when you want to change the angle of the screen. And of course, it makes more sense to buy the screen separately from the PC. I still have an older Cintiq 22HD, still in service. I gave it to my son. He just built a new PC and it's still getting the job done. That can't happen with the Surface Studio. My 27QHD is going to be with me for probably 5 or 6 more years. That's my plan anyway.

    I agree. When I saw the price I could not believe anyone other than hardcore MS fans would buy one of these. You are paying for aesthetics and that is fine if you have more money than sense, but to normal people this is a joke.the hardware is mid range at best, already last gen and missing some basic stuff that computers a third the price have, from USB-C to SSD. Shocking TBH. Of course for those that don't draw this has no interest, big money for a screen that glides soon wears thin. To view photos for editing then I would recommend one of many great monitors out there and with the change buy a new car. However this is a very niche product and it is unfair for me to mock as it is the art community that will decide whether this is a success or just a design statement built for those that desire a trendy office and are willing to pay for that pleasure.
