So wait. An app we can post our art on that doesn't feed it to AI learning machines? An app that doesn't try and monetize us and bleed us dry to share our work with each other? Reminds me of the days you took your notebook to school and showed your drawings to your friends. Ahh the good ole days.

Jumped to Cara immediately after i learn about it. I wish 2 things. That it will be an IG killer for artists. I want to leave instagram permanently with my whole being for years. I haven't done it because it's the most easy way to find my favourite artists. 2 I wish cara keeps it SIMPLE just posts. No "reels" no stories no nothing just posts. I soo want Cara to succeed and become popular. At least among artists. Imagine having a platform without reels, shorts, influencers. Only artworks from other artists, and no AI. That's a dream, lets help it come true.

      @@ninja_tony That's true. I understand that.
But having platform to post artworks and collect them into portfolio with AI arts filtered out properly is already more than other platforms offer.
I tried to hide AI arts on Artstation, and i still cant hide them all from my feed. Some people are trying to pretend their arts are not ai, and at the same time they just put little 'aitag' in the end of hashtags, which most ppl just dont notice believing they see actual art.
On Cara there's no such nonsense.

@@ninja_tonyElaborate please? Unless I am misunderstanding your comment, there are already a lot of platforms that are artist only and people still do quite well over there (DeviantArt, Pixiv, ARTstreet, and more that I'm forgetting). Posting on Cara doesn't mean you can't post anywhere else. Cara is just another place for the art community. If someone wants to look at art and only art then Cara (and any other art-focused platform) is the place to discover artists. If you want your art to be discovered outside the art community, you are still free to continue posting on Instagram, Facebook, or X/Twitter.

As far why people are getting "really, really mad about artists trying to protect their work", you spelled out exactly why they're angy. As an artist, I gave up on Instagram years ago. Over the last few years, my engagement went from getting thousands of likes, comments, and followers on my posts to being lucky if I hit 30 views. Nobody sees my work anymore and I've only lost thousands of followers since 2020. I've switched most of my focus to TH-cam (in hopes of getting my channel monetized soon too), and that's been great, but I've been wishing for another app that is kinder to artists. One important thing to keep in mind is that those platforms are usually almost exclusively used by other artists. So as long as you just want to post your portfolio then its great but as soon as you try to reach a broader audience and possibly sell commissions and other products to earn money then its sadly still bound to the conventional social media platforms.
So migrate your stuff to use cara in addition but don't go and delete your account or your posts and "switch". That will just ruin all you have built, kill off the engagement of your fanbase and essentially ruin any way to earn money in the short term.
If cara turns out to be the new big thing then thats amazing but dont risk your hard work in building your network for a "insert random social media platform - killer" like we have seen on a lot of other occasions.

It’s wishful thinking to assume that what rose to the top on other apps,
won’t make an appearance on Cara, but if they can steer clear of the greatest offenders,
(reels/video content) that’s going to require an overabundance of the lowest offenders,
(namely ads) and/or a subscription service. The slack has to be picked up somewhere,
if Cara isn’t some billionaire’s wife’s passion project.
Any artist who’s managed to make it out of the starving stage,

I fund the things I use. Wikipedia says things like "if everyone who used this site donated a dollar blah blah blah-" and I know that most of those people won't donate, so I always donate _more_ than 2 dollars. I know not everyone will do that, but people like me _will_ because we use the site and want others to be able to use it too. I'll do the same for Cara if I use and like it. And if a day comes where funding is an issue, we will resolve it when it arises, or else find a new way forward entirely. Archive of our Own has done that. Why should it be impossible for another platform to achieve the same? We should not doomsay before that time and leave the internet to stagnate into 3 completely homogenized websites with no true place that provides what we need.

Literally, you don't even get the email rejection. You just wait and nothing happens.

One thing I should clarify is that if you are in the US (at least from my knowledge) nobody is allowed to opt out. The only way to “opt out” is by having a private account or if you live in a region like the EU. In the EU, you have the right to object because they have formalized AI laws.
Another thing to note is that the closest thing to “opting out” also would appear as the option to remove AI trained data upon your account. However, this will only remove existing data that is stored (and NOT future data, as it is not detailed) and they can reject your claim. And also, you’d have to provide them proof of your work having been subject to AI usage. Not to mention they are hoping people give up quickly because of how hard it is to access even just that deletion form, so that enduring people’s impatience will give them the leeway to continue exercising AI integration.
And that is where this AI thing doesn’t just affect artists. One man had to file a claim because someone had generated AI photos of his own daughters, all because of the accessibility that is now forced AI integration. That is but one of many other cases, which is really just the tip of the iceberg.
I really hope Cara stays relevant in the long run.

I'm sure AO3's servers cost a bit less due to it not hosting primarily images, but I guess if Cara manages to get a good number of regular donators, it might manage to stay free.
I've seen someone suggesting that they might incorporate a commissions system where they retain a small percentage of the artist's payment, which I think could be a good idea too.

It's kinda wild to me that people here are saying that you can't do "business" on an artist-first platform... prior to the rise of self-absorbed hellholes like twitter and instagram, vast majority of artists did all their business on Deviantart which was - that's right - an artist-first site. It grew because eventually the criticial mass of pretty pictures was enough for non-artists to start signing up in droves (it also supported a wide array of arts so a lot of people, even if they didn't think they were capital-A Artists, could upload stuff like short stories or comics made from their action figure collections to spruce up their profile). If enough artists withdraw their talent to Cara, the business will follow.

@@GreenBlueWalkthrough You can use it to redirect people from there to your website (which often doesn't have enough traffic by its own) where you can monetize it: sell your art, get commissions, etc. If for some reason one can't technically do a site, or can't afford the hosting and domain (really cheap these days), or the easy "non-technical" way: a 30 bucks/month Shopify account, or Wix (kindda cheaper) if can't or not willing to do any of those options, then the monetizing site can be just anoother platform, like Ko-Fi, Patreon, etc, as you as well would direct people there from your Cara account. But at least you would have your art in an uncluttered place that cares about the whole AI problem, and is taking at least some measures to fight it, plus hopefully having certain traffic (much more than in the typical artist's blog or website). I have an account on Cara and it’s been so refreshing seeing actual ART on my homepage AND explore! I almost forgot what that was like, it’s been so long since I had that feeling on Instagram, where I’ve been stuck for the past few years. Now that Cara’s here, I finally have a place that feels good to post and I don’t plan to post to Instagram anymore. I understand that people who built a large following on ig would hesitate to prioritize a new app, but for someone unpopular like me I have nothing to lose. Folks complain about “needing IG for reaching normies to buy art” but normies haven’t seen/Liked my posts on Instagram in years. The biggest problem with Cara is that your audience will not follow you there, unless your entire audience is other creative people. Anybody who isn’t an artist likely won’t want to be there because they cannot participate. I don’t see Cara becoming the place where people share photos of their family, their dogs, or their lunch. And if you’re not, including those people, then who’s gonna stick around and want to participate, or more importantly, buy from you?
Some people have also said that you can use it as a portfolio, which is cool except how are you going to get buyers or clients to come see it? You’re will have to drive people to Cara somehow, because most of those individuals will not go there purposely.
I just don’t see this being the social media holy Grail that all these creative people think it will become. It’s essentially a low buck version of ArtStation at this point.
However, if all you wanna do is hang out with other creatives and not worry about building clientele or making money from your work, then cool, enjoy the space.

So my question is, what sort of support does this new app have for businesses or professionals who make a living from their creativity?
It’s all great being able to post your art in all its creative glory, but where are the clients. As bad as instagram is, that’s where the paying clients are.
It’s all great that the creator of the app has her own money in it but at the rate of the scaling, they’d need to make money at some point. No one starts a business without the intention of making profit.

I'm so glad i stumbled upon cara. i hate social media. i was dreading the idea of using Instagram and having to make posts, stories, AND reels. thats too damn much!!! not only do we need to create so much bullshit content for social medias like IG, we don't want to and shouldn't have to. artists should just be able to create art, release it and have the existence of the art be the advertisement/promo for the art. as nice as that would be, you have to get a little bit of a word out, so an app specifically for artists and fans of said artists is literally the perfect solution. hopefully people can get their artistic career started with cara.

For me, its not about the "Website" or "the App Platform" those are important, but what's even more important is the infrastructure that hosting the content. The data centers will have AI build into them, no getting around that, anything you post online that gets hosted in another server is gonna be used. Like money in a bank, you put money into an account but the bank uses that money for other stuff until you need it. All those moves to "protect" yourself from Machine Learning, is already too late, unless you build you own hosting network.

Cara is no Instagram, though. Because on Instagram, you had consumers. On Cara, it's just a bunch of artists posting their work. It's just another portfolio platform. There are no consumers there who would want to buy your art or hire you for your services. We need another Instagram not another DeviantArt. But even DeviantArt has a lot more to offer. DeviantArt is a community, it has competitions and clubs. Cara is really really boring. There is no community nor a community incentive. It's morr like a Behance now that I think about it.

I reported this issue (seems like it’s been happening quite a bit for people) and they let me know that thankfully, my account wouldn’t be like, negatively impacted or anything. Hmm, yeah as soon as he mentioned the whole “community vouched” thing, the first thing that came to MY mind was how easily that could be abused. AI-generated content detection will never work in any form (image, text, audio, video, etc.)

I feel like people are ignoring one SIGNIFICANT issue here with this supposed “new savior” app. It doesn’t matter how many artists run over to it if no one else is on it BUT artists. I had never even heard of it before this week, and the vast majority of the non artist population likely hasn’t either. That’s not to say it can’t grow and reach new audiences over time, because every platform had to start somewhere, but people that are preemptively throwing all their eggs in a brand new, untested basket is just wildly ignorant from a business point of view.

flickr has quietly been doing its thing for 20 years now with little change to core functionality-which is a good thing. free account gives you 1,000 posts, or pay something like $5/month for unlimited. mature content ok, established user base, basic social media functionality, excellent as backup if you want to set stuff to private. i dunno, everyone just keeps reinventing the wheel and then goes flat whereas flickr just keeps on trucking.

    700K now!!! ...and growing. Crazy!

    • @ninja_tony
      @ninja_tony 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

That’s a TINY number for a platform, but the biggest problem is that even if it was 7 MILLION, it still wouldn’t matter if the only people on it are artists. Discovery is important, and you can never achieve any kind of real organic growth if you are only marketing to people in your own bubble. The other obvious issue is that the platform still has to monetize at some point, which means either advertising, or charging people for subscriptions, which is fine, but as soon as a new site/app has to figure out the finance part of things, that’s when everything usually unravels.
Not to mention, this is like the 10th “Instagram killer” to come along in just a few years, and absolutely none of them have amounted to anything. I’m not trying to be negative, but I AM trying to be realistic. If people want to start pushing their art to this site in addition to their existing platforms, that’s great, but giving up on everything else and putting all your eggs in an untested basket is career suicide.

    • @KookooruzArt
      @KookooruzArt 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

Hopefully, they succeed at that.
Monetisation is a priority - huge bills amounting, but I do love it there, feels welcoming, warm and open. Gives me good vibes all over, haha! I really wish they succeed!
I’m not advocating giving up on everything else, that's foolish, but I like the awareness they raise around AI, ethical usage and copyright.

The thing about the difference between Cara and Instagram, is that Cara is marketed as "only for artists" so there's really only gonna be artists there. I see it as another Threads, everyone will talk about how it's the Twitter killer and then after a couple weeks it'll be dead again. I can see why you would go there for sharing art but it's not a good move from a business standpoint. Maybe it'll just be another Deviantart app.
But think about it, who else other than artists are gonna see your work there? No one really. It's marketing itself solely to artists. For the artists who are looking to sell their work or make money off of it somehow, there's literally no point to going there. It's like workers asking each other for work.
I don't see it as a negative but it's not the Instagram killer or Meta killer or anything.

Cara and Artgram were spurred back in the NO AI movement that boomed on Artstation, and they haven't died yet. It's hard to make an art related site with goal of being an Instagram or Twitter "killer", since millions of non artists also use those sites, and likely aren't going to join an art community based one just because. People can still use these artist exclusive sites to market themselves, it just won't be as easy as it has been when everyone was on the same site, after all, what are portfolios and blogs for? Artstation was (and still is) used by artists to market themselves for years and their growth without the problem of "workers asking each other for work".

To me feels like a new ArtStation, 99% of the artists get 0 attention, and those who already were big in other platform will stay as the bigger artists, and since this app is created by artists for artists, there's a very slim chance of being able to create an audience there. Eventually, people will just go back to Instagram and accept that their art may be stolen for AI development.
