I managed ~80 books this year, by far my most ever.
In 2020, I want to read more people of color. This year I was at ~25%, which is progress, but I'd like to see that closer ton 50% at least.
I think my biggest accomplishment this year is my 70% books by women. I noticed I had a clear bias for men back in 2015, and I'm happy to see that improvement.
I'm also looking to do more nonfiction (I think I did 7%). 2 a month sounds like a good goal.

I love watching the stats videos :) For my stats, I did a lot of the ones you did, although didn't think to look on goodreads! Used a spreadsheet for most. I always like seeing how many books I read from the library/ how many new/ how many did I clear off my tbr. My tbr is massive, so biggest goal for this year is to read mostly tbr books. Really fun to watch.

An amazing queer series I discovered this year is the Jem Flockhart series by ES Thomson, and I’ve been recommending it to everyone hahaha. It’s about a woman living as a man in Victorian London, working as an apothecary, and she’s in love with a woman. She reflects on how she doesn’t feel that fits in with defining herself as either gender completely. The first book is called Beloved Poison and it’s great! Thanks for sharing your stats with us, I love videos like these 😊

I always love videos like this. It was particularly interesting to hear your reaction the stats. I hear you re Seer of Sevenwaters. If I had to guess I would swear it was over 600 pages!

Its so much fun just doing your own stats that I loved that this video gave me an excuse to spend time doing it aha. I still can't believe Seer of Sevenwaters wasn't over 600 pages aha, it went on FOREVER but then not much happened so there's that...

I think stats are so interesting! Some might find them boring but I'm usually interested in everything. I've noticed that you have a bit of a complicated way of keeping up with stats however, and just wanted to recommend you the "Reading Spreadsheet 2020" by Portal in the pages. I think she makes the most thoughtful excel spreadsheets to track your reading and she always includes a lot of ways to track diversity in your reading. Also you can track not only the number of pages you've read but also hours you listened to audiobooks. Her spreadsheets just really helped me in the past and I just think you might enjoy them as well :) Have a great new year, Jean!

That's actually the spreadsheet I started off the year using! I do think it's excellent but I just don't think I'm someone who is ever going to regularly track my reading somewhere else in addition to Goodreads. I always forgot and would then have a massive backlist to add aha. Thanks, you too!

Love a stats video! I read 134 books in 2019 which is more than the year before so I was pleased. My Goodreads goal was 115 which I thought I would exceed but I didn't want to be put off reading longer books by becoming obsessed with my reading goal. Like you, I wasn't surprised by any of my Goodreads stats. I listened to 33 audiobooks & read half Fiction & half Non Fiction. It was a good reading year & I'm looking forward to 2020's books. I've set my Goodreads goal at 125 which should be achievable. Good luck with your new reading year.

The bulk of my reading tends to be 4 stars as well, and I am perfectly okay with that. I mostly just use the stars to help me rank my books for my monthly wrap ups.

I mean, we do technically have a Queer Lit Readathon every quarter, but the March and September dates are just weekends instead of full weeks 🥳

Happy New Year! I never set goals for myself, however, I need to read some non-fiction books.

The stat that I want to track with my own reading this year is time spent reading, as I'm curious to see how many actual hours I'm reading a week. I'm also going to endeavour to read a number of books on my Goodreads to-read shelf.

In 2020 I also want to get involved with reading non fiction, as it's something I really steer from but think it could be something I really enjoy. I am also going to concentrate on reading more classics. Wishing you a happy new year😊

I didnt put in a lot of effort to read LGBTQ books this year and by my rough count 20-25% of the books I read had a main character that was LGBTQ which I think is decent for the effort I put in.

Some reckon listening to books is better because we don't miss any words where with reading we can jump skip them I do like reading the actual book something better about it.Interesting stuff I fully finished two books haha Goodvids

Real question. And I'm not hating, so nobody come at me. I googled & 4.5% of the world's adult population identifies as lgbtq+. So for me, that you read 30% is fantastic. I, personally, love lgbtq+ representation BUT I think it should be equal to that of the actual population, if that makes sense. It's "cool" right now to be "inclusive" & I think it's something authors are taking advantage of as part of a popularity contest, rather than using it to further the plot or character development ... if that makes sense? But 30%, I think, you should be proud of because we could tell you made an intentional effort this year.

    • @JeansThoughts
      @JeansThoughts  4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

I don’t think you can use those numbers for accuracy. The UK alone is higher than 4.5% and data has rapidly increased over the past few years meaning the likelihood is it will continue to increase and that’s not because more young people are suddenly LGBT but because centuries of oppression means people still don’t identify publicly. Not to mention some countries still have the death penalty for LGBT people so it’s a terrifying world to come out in. Having more LGBT literature available and talked about publicly is part of making people feel like they can be themselves and my main issues is that I had to hunt for that 25% if my reading. A lot of it was books far less hyped and popular than what is talked about elsewhere. I’m also bi so from a personal perspective I want to read about LGBT people as much as straight/cis people for my own sake so its not really about ticking boxes either :). I’m not desperate to read 50/50 but when I’m making a conscious effort I’d like to see bigger results is all :).
