He's one only 6 to win for their directorial debut. The other 5 to do this were: Delbert Mann (MARTY), Jerome Robbins (WEST SIDE STORY co-director), Robert Redford (ORDINARY PEOPLE), James L Brooks (TERMS OF ENDEARMENT), and Kevin Costner (DANCES WITH WOLVES). It should be noted that in Jerome Robbins' case, WEST SIDE STORY was the ONLY film he ever directed (he was primarily a Broadway stage director), and on top of that, he also won an Honorary Oscar for his dance choreography in WEST SIDE STORY that same year as well.

You know what is funny: American Beauty is Mendes' diretorial debut, and still became good enough to direct Skyfall.
However, The Sixth Sense is Shyamalan's first recognized work, and became bad enough to direct The Last Airbender.

    • @connorw2k

This film should have had the rare distinction of winning every oscar nominated for with 8 oscars. I really don't know how Thomas Newman lost that score oscar, like wtf. It should have had film editing in the bag, because of how close best picture and best film editing coincide, and the fact it was awesome editing. And then Annett benning, I can totally understand how/why she lost to Hilary swank... but Annett was just the perfect Carolyn burnham and she really should have won.

Kubrick wasn't even nominated for 2001, so that would have been a surprise if they nominated him for one of his most polarizing films. Fight Club was a commercial flop and didn't receive praise by critics until years later when the film became a cult classic. Before The Dark Knight was released (and they started to extend the number of nominees from five to ten after it wasn't nominated for Best Picture), action blockbusters (and their directors) hardly had a chance to be nominated.

    M. Night had so much potential, I wish he kept up the good work. I guess he's doing okay now, but he'll never be as successful as he once was, which is a shame.

M Night should have won, he not only directed the movie Sixth sense but also wrote it as well at the age of 28

@JackKlompus13 It's also funny to think that had he won he'd be pretty much be considered the Michael Cimino of his generation now.

I think Sam Mendes deserved this one. My second choice would be Michael Mann.

"While Fight Club had numerous critical champions, the film's critical attackers were far more vocal, a negative chorus which became hysterical about what they felt to be the excessively graphic scenes of fisticuffs ... They felt such scenes served only as a mindless glamorization of brutality which might encourage young male viewers to beat each other senseless." I think this sums it up quite well.

I'm not saying that I disagree with your statements, you're right, but if you know the Academy and their "policies" then you realize it just was very unlikely that those 3 directors (though Kubrick had a pretty good chance as a "legend" who didn't get his due in the years before by the Academy) would be nominated.

" Commercial flops have been nominated a lot". Yes, but you have to realize that critics didn't like Fight Club either. There's no chance it would get a nomination. Of course Kubrick should have been nominated for almost every film he has made, but the Academy often doesn't respect some great filmmakers enough. Kubrick's only Oscar was for the Special effects of 2001, so a onmination for Eyes wide shut=unlikely. Matrix received oscars in technical categories, like those kind of films always do.
