It’s too contemporary for my taste and it doesn’t feel like watchmen. It feels so different from the source material to the point where it shouldn’t even have been called watchmen. I would have been happier if it was just named something different and said it was inspired by watchmen instead of using the license.
I honestly thought the pilot was a bit of a mess. I spent the whole pilot in a state of “who is what now? Whats going on? Wait what?” I did kind of understand the basic premise of what was going to occur but the characters felt like a revolving door spinning faster than I could get in. Soundtrack wise I didn’t notice much but the use of that transition song from 1929(?) to their present time was bad imo. I’m gonna give the other episodes a shot when they come out and also a rewatch of the pilot but that did not leave a good taste in my mouth.
I totally see your points and frustrations with the pilot. Personally, I thoroughly enjoyed the show. Have you read the original comics or seen the movie? I feel like it would be damn near impossible to comprehend much of the underlying subcontext without prior knowledge.

I’m going to give it another chance to see if it goes somewhere other than the opening episode. It’s like they took the initial idea of history changing the future and went with racial events changing the landscape of the future. Although I enjoyed the premiere, it had a very predictable arc. I hope future episodes have some better twists. I also hope they keep the superhero stuff in the peripheral instead of dragging it in front & center

It’s also really poorly done in terms of believability even in the universe. Alan Moore is mentally crazy, but was still able to present differing views respectfully. These show runners? Nah! But hey, I’m going to give it a shot, I’m already paying for HBO. I haven't watch the HBO series, but I've read the comic book and watched the movie. I think except the changed ending of the movie, it was okay. Since the limited time of the movie I was expecting shallower touch on all of the characters and events before watching it. But I'm not sure if I want to watch this HBO series. I think the comic book ended perfectly and it shouldn't have a prequel or sequel. I also didn't watch the Lost series by the way, but everyone who watched it said that the creator of the Lost can create great worlds, but always fails on the finales. So we'll see what will happen with this series final episode.

In terms of themes, no more 'Woke' than the comics. Where Alan Moore is pretty blunt with his views on people like Rorschach. Would recommend it, but may be slightly jarring if you just know the film.

Uff, I disagree, I thought it was completely mediocre, and an overall bastardization to the Watchmen name. The overall presentation is good, as the acting and cinematography look top notch(it's HBO, so it's to be expected), but the writing is soooo hacky. It's a polished turd. I think it's around a 5.5-6/10.
Digging the show for sure and I'm definitely a fan of Doomsday Clock. I'm definitely waiting on that last issue!! By way of comparison HBO is doing a better job with Watchmen than was done with The Dark Tower... ...just sayin'
What do race riots and white supremacy have to do with WATCHMEN? I have no idea, but it was pretty painful to watch. Why is Rorschach a celebrity all of the sudden? This is a joke, right? There's no way any fan of Watchmen or even just well written stories watched that first episode and thought "Wow, this is great!". That was without a doubt the worst hour of TV I've ever seen and I had zero expectations going into it.
I don't know, I still don't think they should try to follow up Watchmen, the show is very good, but it completely avoids the main message of the comic, that super heroes are dumb, pathetic and dangerous in a realistic society. Sure, it could end up saying something interesting about that theme by the end of the show, but if we're gonna judge based on just the first episode, then I'm not convinced. Everything else, I loved.
Boop to be fair that’s the type of thing you have to illustrate over a whole season, if a hero does something dumb, pathetic, or dangerous, only once (because you know it’s just the first episode), then the viewers will see it as a heroes mistake rather than a deeper theme about how fucked up super heroes would actually be. I think it’s best to ease into the theme you are talking about for a general audience, who will probably expect the heroes to be nearly perfect. My bet is a lot of people who are unfamiliar with Watchmen will watch this because it’s on HBO. I’m kind of upset I won’t be able to watch the show myself. I haven’t seen the first episode. But what I hear sounds interesting.
