I would rather translate Sturmgewehr as assault rifle instead of storm rifle. Literally translated storm rifle isn't wrong, but the word Sturm can also mean a typically massed assault. Like the storm on the Bastille in German is "Sturm auf die Bastille". To storm as a verb "stürmen" can mean a rapid assault or take over of something, it can also be used to describe someone or something rushing to a position like carried by a storm gust. In football the offensive players are called "Stürmer" or stormers.
