I’m playing this piece right now! It is an under appreciated piece. Many think Liszt is full of nothing but virtuosic fluff, but even his flashiest pieces like this one hold extremely beautiful music. Great performance!

@@anim3nz672 True, especially his water pieces, annes de pelerinage, ballades, polonaises, other reminiscence, concerto 2 and his first piano concerto he has made( piano concerto 3), his innovations in orchestral works, etc..
Fun fact: Liszt had retired from publicly playing piano when he composed this (in fact it's a little more complicated. Both his piano concertos took about 25 years until they had reached their final revisions and were performed). So when this was performed for the first time Liszt did not play the piano. He conducted the orchestra.
Edit: I confused this with the 2nd Piano Concerto. He did in fact play this concerto himself at the world premiere. Hector Berlioz conducted the Orchestra.
Had the privilege to listen to this magnificent concerto in person.

This concerto showed how much Liszt still favorited the piano, giving it loads of solos. This is the first time I have heard a piano stand out so much as a main tune.
Its true Liszt obviously favored the piano, but this is literally a piano concerto, the piano is supposed to stand out

I love that Andante mvt. I was very pleasantly surprised when Trifonof accompanied the First Cello of LA Phil as the Encore piece after Trifonof's Brahms Concerto 2.
Maestro has plenty of pieces he can play in the orchestral format for sure. Maestro is indeed the Maestro.
@@T-J-S Personally I don't. Everybody and their dog plays the Rachmaninoff's these days. As great as they are they are hopelessly overplayed. Pianists should rather learn more obscure repertoire to stand out.
@@Quotenwagnerianer They are undeniably played a lot. If that is a problem, would Chopin's Concertos do? Or Beethoven's Concertos, he played some on his Sung Chang channel
