It's not that it was a bad movie, it just has waaaay too many plot holes and improbable story elements that really hurt the story. It's a fun popcorn movie and you can't put too much thought into "why something is", otherwise you start to find the problems with the movie. Just take it for what it is, an action movie.

The televised version is also different from the one you get on DVD. I remember watching this movie for the first time when I was a teenager, and there were several scenes in it that are not in the DVD version. One in particular is that at the end of the TV version the woman gave the mutant guy the name Odysseus.

Thing is that a Waterworld remake/reimagining would work, but it would be without the Costner and the Smokers. Focusing more on the atollers and their relationship to the muto's or focus on a grown up Enola and a new raider society, called something like Predator Atollers or just Predtoller for short.

This is one of the best videos you've done yet! I've always found the Deez fascinating, and it's made me wonder just what other ships exist out there in Waterworld: perhaps there are aircraft carriers, battleships, cruise liners, or other giant craft that have been modified to become floating cities and fortresses. If they do exist, imagine how amazing it would be if they occasionally fought each other to the death, with these giant city-ships throwing everything they have at each other in an attempt to sink one another like old man-o-wars from the 1800's. I hope the upcoming TV series touches on this, as it could make for some spectacular action sequences!

Bladerunner got a similar response and now its a considered one of the best sci fi films of all time. A films response often suffers from the period of time when they come out. Whats popular socially, how people see the world and how they feel. How many years now have we endured zombie and post apocalyptic films. In a way Waterworld started a lot of that when that wasnt popular. If that film came out 10 or 20 years later it would have been more successful but not as unique as it was in the 90s. Back then it was action hero movies that dominated. Which WW did have but not in an environment that people were comfortable with at the time.

The fact that a Waterworld fandom TH-cam channel exists gives me hope for humanity.
Like the Postman, Waterworld was Kevin's attempt to top the meta-commentary action genre and de-throne Demolition Man. Waterworld and Postman had excellent world building but studio meddling to mellow out the meta-commentary happened, ostensibly to widen the market... But who knows, maybe there were politics were at play, and some interesting ideas got de-emphasized...
The final product was still pretty damn awesome, regardless.

I know it makes no sense, but I like to believe that 'Waterworld' and Mad Max are set in the same universe. Like, the majority of the world is dried up desert for MM, but the massive and deep Pacific Ocean never completely evaporated, and the survivors on ships like the Deez simply forgot nautical navigation over time, so they're forever stuck circling in the ocean raiding the atolls for survival, unable to find the old continents. Meanwhile, the land dwellers fight over the same crude oil and drinking water as usual in Mad Max.
