  • To the general public, Michael Jeffrey Jordan is the greatest basketball player to ever live. With all his unparalleled success in his 14 year career, it is hard to debate there is one player who has accomplished more in that same timespan. But as the classic moniker 'Hard work beats talent when talent doesn't work hard' goes, it is hard not to wonder what Shaq would have achieved had he given it his 100 percent. In this video, I discuss the early career of Shaquille O'Neal during his Magic days and then pivot to why despite having an amazing, arguably TOP 5 NBA career of all time, he could have been even better had he changed just a few things. Alas, that is why the titled is called Shaq... the NBA player that should have been the GOAT!

    'Why isn't Shaq the GOAT?'
    I don't want to disrespect Shaquille O'Neal's legacy, which is as gigantic as the man itself.
    But as I listened to Shaq on Friday at his heartfelt farewell media conference -- as always, he exceptionally blended candor and humor -- a nagging question kept rising in my mind.
    'Why isn't Shaq the greatest player ever?'
    "His 19-year NBA career isn't on par with Michael Jordan's, who is universally regarded as the NBA's greatest player of all time.
    But it could have been. Correction: It should have been. Shaq spent roughly a decade as the most physically imposing force in professional basketball. He won four championships and an MVP award, appeared in six NBA Finals, and arguably was the most likable person in all of sports. Over his first 14 seasons, he averaged more than 20 points per game and unofficially led the league in humiliating defenders in the paint.
    But as phenomenal as he was, as exciting as it was to witness his breathtaking combination of power and athleticism, he could have been better.
    And Shaq doesn't disagree.
    "I missed over 5,000 free throws," he said. "I missed about 300 games, so that's five-to-six thousand points right there. I'd probably be No. 2 right now in scoring. That's the only thing I'm upset with myself about. But I've heard my name mentioned next to those names -- Bill Russell, Wilt Chamberlain -- and even if I didn't reach my full potential, I can say I made it."
    Only, this is about more than just Shaq's place on the all-time scoring list, where he is fifth.
    His career is littered with memorable moments and funny lines, but one thing I'll never forget is how Shaq sabotaged the Lakers' opportunity at an unprecedented fourth straight championship in the 2002-03 season.
    The Lakers had never won four in a row; and although it's doubtful any team could challenge the eight straight championships won by Russell's Celtics, the Shaq-and-Kobe Lakers were putting themselves in the conversation as one of the best teams of all time.
    But that year, Shaq elected to have toe surgery during training camp instead of in the offseason. As he put it, "Since I suffered the injury on company time, why shouldn't I be able to get surgery and do recovery on company time?"

    'Reviewing Shaq's Legacy'
    "One of the first messages Shaquille O'Neal received from Phil Jackson consisted of both a compliment and a challenge.
    "I told Shaq when I took over as head coach in our first initial meeting as a team that the MVP trophy should be named after him when he retired," Jackson recently told Fox Sports' Mark Kriegel.
    The message spoke both to Shaq's nearly unstoppable stature. His 7-foot-1, 325- pound frame provided a physical presence that proved difficult to stop inside. His agility made it hard to slow him down. And on the heels of Shaq officially announcing Wednesday his retirement via Tout, he'll be remembered as one of the most dominant centers in the game.
    But Jackson also shared that anecdote as evidence that despite his four rings, three-time Finals MVP, one regular season MVP and 28,596 career points, the man with a million nicknames grossly underachieved. “This is a guy who could and should have been the MVP player for 10 consecutive seasons,” Jackson told Kriegel."

    As a guy that saw this happen in real time, I have to agree with you. Back in 1992 or 1991, Shaq showed the world who he was against my Arizona Wildcats. This guy was gonna dominate forever we thought. Then seeing 2002 Shaq just made me sad. This guy should have been incredible for more years but once he got the rings, he just coasted. He should have retired a Laker rather than hoping some team would pick him up year end year out.

    The feud didn't start with just Kobe, it started as early as with Penny. It was not just the shoe commercials and money. When they lost in the finals, Penny worked extra hard with great motivation to get back to the finals and win while Shaq was doing other stuff such as teaming up with Hakeem to do a 1v1 tv special ppv. Penny was like big dog, we gotta beat these guys (Hakeem), don't hang around with them, focus! what are you doing?

    The Orlando Magic Shaq was fun to watch. He had skills. The Lakers Shaq made the 2000s NBA unwatchable. All he did was bowl over people and dunk on them.

    Shaq in his prime was probably the best at his peak. Nobody could stop Shaq. Wild was similar in dominance, but Shaq was much heavier, and for guy 7 foot 1 and well over 300lbs in his prime his max vertical jump was 36 inches, which for context is only an inch and a half below recent dunk contest champion Terrance Ross. Underrated about Shaq is he had moves and much better coordination then pure athletic centers like Dwight. His baby hook was unstoppable. He moved incredibly well for his size and had a handle for a big man too. Players have testified in practice he had an incredible handle that we didn't really get to see in games as much.

      Paul Popoola it was, shaq and kobe could have won 6-8 titles had shaq took his health seriously. Kobe was just entering his prime so shaq can take less of a workload as he aged, but if he took care of himself he could’ve been somewhat a lesser version of his prime years and still be effective.

    Nah! Shaq was exceptional, there is absolutely no doubt about it, but he would never be as dominant as the one center, the true GOAT which is Wilt the Stilt. If you would ever have seen him play, would ever have experienced what this man did, then there couldnt be this video.
    Wilt Chamberlain dominated the league like no one ever did and no one ever will. Of course you could bring some crappy Era-Argument or his only two Championships, but believe me, that wont do it. The guy could jump as high as anyone ever, ran faster than NFL runningbacks, once even led the league in Assists - and all that on Top of unseen Scoring abilities, unseen Rebound Abilities, unseen Blocking Abilities and Mind Blowing records(100 Points in a game, 55 rebounds in a game, 26 Blocks in a game, 50.4 ppg over a whole season, more than 48 minutes per game over a season due to overtimes, over 22 rebounds average over a whole fuckin season and so on). I mean, they changed several rules because of his domination! If that guy would have had the Team that Bill Russell had around him, he would have crushed the league, no doubt.

    • @mauricedavis1740
      @mauricedavis1740 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      the thing that hurts wilt is his playoff performances. for whatever reason he wasn't as dominant in the playoffs as he was in the regular season, and that's putting winning or losing aside because it is a team game. Shaq dominated in the finals for three years in a row when it mattered the most, that's something Wilt could never do..

    • @SonnyK248
      @SonnyK248 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's hard to put Wilt over Russell as Bill had his number almost every time they played each other. Yes Wilt had the stats but they were very different centres. and Russell's team would almost always beat Wilts in spite of Wilt playing on a Lakers team with Elgin Baylor and Jerry West.

    It's shocking how underrated Shaquille O'Neal has become. When I tell people that Shaq for a time was the best player I'd ever seen, they act like I said John Koncak or something. Which is funny because in the early 2000s relatively few would have had an issue it. There was even a poll around that time among NBA players and coaches about who was better between Shaq and Michael Jordan and most of them actually picked Shaq. But for some reason perception of Shaq has fallen off a cliff.

      Very late reply but I think the obvious reason is that the overall perception of Shaq is that he didn't work as hard as he could to be the best player he could've been. He recognizes that. That alone is obviously going to take its toll on Shaq's reputation and legacy, as it should.

    11:54 It's actually scientifically proven that free throw shots are harder for big men.
    It has to do with the angle and arch etc.
    That doesn't mean there will be NO big men that shoot well from the free throw line. So your argument against that is a straw man.

    • @Donnachaidh07

      Wilt was a better free throw shooter when he was younger.

    Putting on 40 pounds of mass when he was with the Lakers was the biggest mistake there was no need for that. At 325 pounds before he was still way bigger than the opposition as it was and he could run the floor much better. Eventually all that weight he put on most likely with steroids turned him into a fat bloated mess if hed a kept his weight down his entire career his body of work would be much more impressive than it is. He also got a lil too comfortable after he won his ring he started to miss more and more games and his conditioning went down hill. The fact he didnt lead the league in rebounding scoring and even won dpoy at least 5 times is a major underachievement on his part.

    • @RRRRRRRRR33
      @RRRRRRRRR33 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      To lead the league in scoring at least 5 times is a fair statement. But rebounding and dpoy.. I don't know. Not even Olajuwon was able to won 5 DPOYs, or even a specialist like Ben Wallace could get close to that. Rebounding it's almost fair, but Shaq shared space with prime Garnett, Duncan, etc.. Rodman when he was younger. Even if he was committed, I don't think he could outpace a freak like Garnett, no freaking way

    Peak Shaq 2000-2002 was the goat. Now he wasn’t the goat for a full career. However, his peak was beyond anything outside of maybe Jordan, Wilt, Kareem, and Lebron and I would still probably take Shaq’s peak.
    He made the 2001 def. player of the year Mutumbo look helpless while Shaq shit all over him. Jordan went up against a def. player of the year in 96 in G Payton and Payton actually held Jordan below his averages.
    Peak Shaq was also a top 3 defensive presence and rebounder in the game, and an elite passer for his position.
    I don’t think I personally have seen one player warp defenses and control a game like peak
    Shaq was. Not even Jordan.

      The league was always plagued by superstars taking advantage of 1v1 matchups. Shaq didn't had the same appeal of Jordan or Magic, that's why they removed this abomination for good. Zones are part of the sport, the US took too long to adapt it.

    • @SuperJoobers
      @SuperJoobers 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Rafael Teles bro the U.S. didn’t take to long to adapt. We invinted b-ball and the zone defense. Bro they were playing man to man defense over seas as well until the dream made fool out of any team that steped on the court with them. That’s why they started using it because they didn’t have the athletic ability to contain anyone 1 v1. And the nba didn’t adapt to it, Shaq left them no choice triple teaming him wasn’t even working.

    • @RRRRRRRRR33
      @RRRRRRRRR33 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Do you really think you know the FIBA level? Have you read my name? lol I definitely know international basketball better than you (which is not a great thing at all, the FIBA level is ridiculous). That being said, zones were fully adapted in Europe from a long time, even before Shaq was even drafted. The NBA stole some concepts from FIBA (and vice-versa), but in a very subtle way. Zones is a big change, so the "creators" didn't want something as drastic as this, they already removed it once, why bring it back? Shaq of course took advantage of the anti-zone rules, but he dominated just as much as Jordan, Olajuwon, Magic and Barkley posting up people for 15 seconds, etc.. it was a transition period, the NBA needed to evolve after so many years of boring dynasties and no golden boy to take advantage. Shaq didn't forced any rule changes because of his own offensive ability, in fact, rules changed because people were taking advantage of his horrid FT shooting. And lastly, basketball was created by a canadian, this is common knowledge... and a usual joke. It's like when people think that soccer was created by us.

  • @angela-onesroman8873

    Shaq's impact on the teams he played for was the number 1 reason they succeeded as well as they did, his unstoppable presence was second to none. The "G.O.A.T", more than debatable as far as the center position. Of all time, he can be mentioned in the same sentence with anyone. One thing is for sure, as far as dominance there was no one better.
