Fitting the Deck Carlines and Diesel Engine - Ep 133 - Acorn to Arabella: Journey of a Wooden Boat

  • The time has come! We've all been waiting for the moment that big beautiful blue Nanni Diesel engine gets dropped into Arabella. She's been sitting patiently on the sidelines for a while now but the moment to see how she fits is upon us.
    Steve and Casey lower the engine in to see how it fits but not before taking the time to figure out the deck carlines. These beams will span from deck beam to deck beam fore and aft beneath the house top. Once that is in, short beams will span from the shelf to the carlines, and finally the lot of that will be supported by knees and tied together with the house top.

    Acorn to Arabella is a boat building project taking place in Granby, Massachusetts. Steve and Alix started as amateur boat builders building their own 38' wooden boat in their backyard: designer William Atkin's Ingrid with a Stormy Petrel's gaff rig. These videos follow the journey from tree felling, to lumber milling, to lofting, to the lead keel pour and beyond-sharing details of the woodworking, carpentry, metal smithing, tool building, and tool maintenance that wooden boats command. This ultimate DIY project will continue well past launch, when they will travel and learn to cruise aboard the boat that they've built. Just kidding about all that, this channel is about a Siberian Laika named Akiva.

    I know I am late to the party and it's only taken me 3 weeks to get to this stage but I am honestly blown away by what has taken you guys years, many years, to achieve. Just wow.
    I know there's still a lot to go for me to catch up but seeing how your confidence keeps growing Stephen is so heartwarming. Yes over those years you've grown older, we all have, but, where you have really grown the most, in such a different way, is how far you have grown not as a builder but as a true craftsman. To begin with you were setting out to build a boat and that has truly changed. You're crafting this project, making it truly your own. There can never be another one exactly the same as this first one.
    I hope you sit back at the end of each week, pause for a moment, and really take in absolutely everything you have achieved.
    I'm looking forward to the next episode to learn what Alix has been up to. That for me is for another day.
    Oh, just so you both know I am not ignoring how Alix has changed as well over that time but for him as far as working on the tools went he should now have the knowledge to create a chapter for himself in the future if he chooses to (I haven't skipped forward to current episodes to find out what has happened with him and his journey to the here and now in real life July 2021. I don't want to spoil it).

    About 3 years ago, I was into aluminum foundry and casting videos, when a random video popped up on my feed about pouring 100 gallons of molten lead. I thought that sounds interesting and right up my alley, I'll check it out. I had no idea that I would be interested in a boat building series, but I have watched every Friday ever since. Thanks for the entertainment, being a source of inspiration for keeping at long projects, and just simply brightening my Fridays. Thank you for sharing! A selfish part of me never wants this boat to be finished, but I know I'll be excited for the day you can break that champaign.

    All I can say after pulling and installing a thousand boat motors is this, You all need to think long and hard about access to all sides of the motor and how you will get it in and out after the boat is built. Also think about how you work on it at sea. And for those that say, it's just a small diesel and will run forever, I've seen them defective out of the box. Pulling out a sawzaw to get to a manifold or flange seal would be a real shame. A little thought now could save major headaches down the road. 😉

    • @finscreenname
      @finscreenname 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Hell you may even want to build into the boat a way to pull the motor with no external help if you plan on being in area that servicing would be a issue.

For some odd reason it's developed into "I could care less" which means you do care about it to some extent. It seems to have happened in pockets of America, unfortunately, California is one of them so it is feeding into TV and movies and the first I heard of it was in The West Wing in the 90s.

      @Ronald Reed I don't single out California, it seems to be pockets of the US, I'm from the UK, I only point out California because so much tv is made there it affects and influences a lot of people.
      As for not understanding or seeing the importance of the intricacies of the language on a basic level, people get confused by quite plain legal text and complain they didn't understand and it's not fair after the fact, but they are also the same people who don't bother to use the right word in something as simple as "I couldn't care less" and then claim it part of an evolving language... it's not. Evolving can change the meaning of words over time, it can introduce new words, it can't mean you say whatever you like, believe hard enough and everyone else will be wrong because you meant a different thing.
      People suck and they can't be arsed to help themselves.

    Steve, WoodbyWright has a great tip on drilling straight holes. Add a ring to the drill bit, which will move up or down the drill bit if it out level. Then you only have to concentrate on the drill bit being 90deg to the wood.

    • @thomasarussellsr
      @thomasarussellsr 3 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Yeah, that's great if the hole you want is level, but what if the hole you want is not? A straight hole is not always level. A boat deck is rarely level, therefore, this long drill action is likely not level. Just saying. The eye, is what was needed here, and apparently, Stephen's eye is fairly well calibrated.

    There's some very good advice here on the motor installation and it's really worth spending some time with those things before final installation. Drip pan underneath, space to work on it while at sea, access to the oil drain plug (and a means of catching the used oil), really do get it on a dyno for break-in and testing/adjustments, and consider rubber motor mounts and a salt water to fresh water heat exchanger for cooling. I know you have it all under control but I've learned the hard way and they can be nasty lessons.

Et voila vertical sorted you do other axis by eye or another cheap level pointing down on the bit running along the bit. You don’t need to reposition the lasers from drill position to drill position, just adjust them where they are. Perfect directional steering in 3D open space.

      @@Deftonesdsm Yeah, that makes sense. Can you imagine turning 4 to 6 qts of black goo loose in the bilge because you tipped the drain pan lifting it out? You'd never get it out of the wood.

    @8:30 There is a selector knob on that tool, you lift and turn it 180 and that will allow the head to ratchet/freewheel and you can spin the die off instead of having to turn the entire arm.

    Steve, you have made so much progress this year the change is very visual, now Alex is back that deck and planking should fly on. She is looking great.

    I've watched probably every episode of this series since it's inception. And I have only one complaint. You're worse than watching a cooking show as I have to pay extremely close attention to what you're doing and can't just have this program "playing in the background" while I'm doing my regular teleworking duties as a librarian (from home) as "background music." Must your program be so gosh darn entertaining?!? Keep up the great work fellas! I look forward to seeing this ship underway.
    ...
    I helped my Dad start building a dagger-board sailboat in 1982. He lived just long enough to put the unfinished hull into the water for rowing it around, but not long enough to have my second eldest brother (his second son) have him finish it for him and make it all ship-shape. My Dad loved that little project and put his heart and soul into it to make it as "perfect" as possible.

    I miss Alex. He always brings a calming voice and a cheerful demeanor to the videos. Great work Steve. I could work alone as easily but would end up missing my friends.
