- In the first episode of Bonus Tracks, The Alchemist talks about his early work with Mobb Deep, how producers are like salesmen, and the importance of presentation when trying to sell a beat... including a hilarious story involving Nas and Swizz Beatz.
Bonus Tracks is a new series where we highlight the best stories that didn't make it into the final cut of our original interviews.
You can watch our full interview with The Alchemist here: • Alchemist On Turning B...
What's your favorite Alchemist beat of all time?
too many classics so gonna throw a sleeper pick - S.N.O.R.T. (Boldy James)
Domo Genesis - All Alone (I have a weakness for sampled grunting old men)
We gon make it 💯
Prodigy- Keep it Thoro and so many more!!!
Royal Hand
I still laugh at Prodigy in his book saying he thought Al was FBI when they first met "oh the Feds got ppl making beats now"😅😅
😂😂😂😂
A Al…I hope you seeing this but; PLEASE KEEP RAPPING & PLEASE PUT “YOUR CD OUT!!!” (PLEASE AL)
I was thinking about that too 😂
😭😭😭
Cause he was white?
Thank you Al for giving Havoc his flowers. Yours are also well deserved.
Basically described havocs alchemical abilities how he was in awe of it. “Took what they were thinking and feeling put it into a beat”
Al's Carhartt game is always on super point.
Factual
They throw that shit at him
Yea he always finds the fly shit
Carhartt WIP 🤞🏼 he got samples fasho tho
White boy hipster 😂
maaaaaan, i wish this was 2 hours long. Such a cool person
did you watch our full interview with him?? th-cam.com/video/OTGheE1muVI/w-d-xo.html
Nas needed to do all those albums with alchemist and not hit boy, my opinion
Nas hates real hiphop fans.
Nas needs something more rich than alchemist. Premier, Pete Rock, RZA, Kanye, Q Tip, Large Pro, etc.
Nas makes "rich black Boule" music now
You need to listen to Al fr@@scienz
@@blaquenguni9249 nah fr tho
Cant wait for the Alchemist Yasiin Bey collab.
Is that in the works?!?
alchemist has slowly become
my favorite producer of all time
I love his dope sound of 90s soul beats! We need more producers like that bringing that soul back into the tracks fasho
@@SteveyTVhis beats are trash stop boasting shix up! Hes stealin shix, Sampling is for weaklings real Priducers Play Instruments & invent complete new Templates! Scott Storch is the Most Talented in HipHop/Rap etc. Industry. Dre, Dj Premier, Alchemist, Rick Rock, JD & many more, none of them is a Real Beatmaker, they just Produce stuff which already has been out there, sounds silly right ???😂
Also his style of "Sampling" his Taste in General is Awful!!!! Gtfo Freakin Fanboys with no own Opinion, in Fact a Stpd Opinion
Same goes for Swizz Beats who like that mfs Beats must have really serious issues with his own Taste and for all the "Ears" lol
@@alltimeklazzikz not reading that God bless Brodie
When he talked about having small speakers and having to produce in low volume because of neighbors, I’m glad to hear he also went through the same thing I’m going through now
Blessings bro I completely feel that
The track from Gods Son hes talking about is "The G.O.D". The beat is wack, Swizz honestly finessed a lot of top MCs to spit over trash beats.
So many of Swizz beats are trash but we respect him because the ruff ryders run
@@him37404like swizz cheese his beats were produced with hella holes in em
😂😂😂😂
Uncle Al aging like fine wine
Facts
He became one of my favorite producers ever. So prolific!
Best producer in the game hands down
I still got madlib as goat but alchemist been on a crazy 5 year run thats putting him in top 5
“I needed the music to speak louder than me…” 👌🏾👌🏾👌🏾👌🏾👌🏾👌🏾👌🏾
"I break bread, ribs, hundred dollars bills" R.I.P Prodigy
I throw a TV at you...crazy?
Pull off on ducatis and other 4wheels
8:48. Swizz for sure sold some beats with his antics 😂😂😂😂
EDIT: THEN HE BRINGS UP SWIZZ RIGHT AFTER 😂😂😂😂😂
Yep. Producers absolutely speak thru their beats. As Royce famously said "we [Premier] both speak with our hands in dangerous ways..." 🔥
boom💥
Tick tick
Ahh good ole Carmen the Hip Hop Opera lol. Dope track though. But makes me think of how much I wish A Prince of Thieves movie woulda got made.
Alchemist became my favorite producer when he dropped “Covert Coup” in 2010 with Curren$y CLASSIC!!!!
Swizz story sounds like Swizz for sure
🤣
It is just criminal that Eminem has this guy to his disposal but doesnt rap on this man beats
I’ve always said that. I don’t think Em ever rapped on a ALC beat except that one time on the Tim Westwood freestyle.
Listen to chemical warfare
I could listen to Uncle Al talk about music forever
Keep it Thoro is top 25 hip-hop tracks of all time
Always been a fan of Alchemist since I first heard “The Realest” but what really elevated his ranks imo as one of the greatest ever was the Albert Einstein album. RIP Prodigy. 🕊️
The same. Albert Einstein is still in my Car console. Heavy Heavy rotation
YES!! INTERLUDES are some of my favorite things, and i feel what he is saying with my soul. i love mixing lyrics with some classic interlude vibes...something ive always done
Amazing first episode! I could watch ALC interviews for hrs and not get bored!
respectfully, Swizz Beats has been widely regarded in the scene as stealing his entire sound from a Casio keyboard lmao. he's made a few great beats but they always sound exactly the same to me.
This whole Loop/Chop Divide is Crazy! Some of the Illest Beats Classic Tracks were Loops. If its Ill its Ill. This whole choppin up bits n pieces to death is where alot of ya fav Producers fell off. Keep it Simple Stupid...
Tribe/Tip really did this well
The honesty & humility displayed in this interview is super Dope. & for the record... Alchemist is one of the Best producers of all time. 🙌🏾💪🏿🧠
As producers we are sales people too. That’s a powerful statement
That Swizz nas story at the end is gold
The Swizz joint I think he talking about is a bonus track called G.O.D. It didn’t make the final cut
Alchemist is right about questioning why artist are not rhyming on interludes, or not making them full songs...Ex: AZ on Born Alone /Die Alone song
His evolution has been crazy. He's easily in my top 5... best producer in the game IMO
One of the last projects I remember having amazing interludes was Wiz Khalifas mixtapes. Kush & Oj and the mixtapes previous to that with the W.E.E.D radio skits and the beats playing were so fire. Some of my favourite beats ever on them tracks
I was today yrs old when I found out this nigga from LA. Shit blows my mind bc his sound is like the what I imagine a concert in a NY subway. Dirty drime rough underground blues
Love this dude,he's so humble and doesn't do drama
It’s true a lot of my favorite skits interludes the jut made comedy or shit talkin over sick ass beats OutKast and snoop dogg tbh
Keep it thoro song and beat is sick I listened to the beat on repeat p bars was on fire 🔥 my favorite track from son
There is absolutely nothing wrong with a loop must have purpose and direction though.
I like that one where he sampled that "she blinded me with science"
Mobb Deep's Got It Twisted?
he's really like an uncle, he has crazy stories for days🔥
.I was already aware of his sound before Mobb Deep but when he came out with that "Backwards" track for Mobb Deep , I been hooked on his dope since then which was back in 2007 .
Ya too bad he been around the mobb since 1998 buddy lol
That Swizz Beat Had To Be "The G.O.D." 🤣
Despite being one of the greatest hip hop producers let's not forget Al can spit too 💯 shout out Havoc too Mobb for life
Bandana P will always stand as tall as the trees -Nas “Queensbridge Politics” 🕊️🙏🏾
"I needed the music to speak louder than me." So well said. Alchemist and Madlib have the besg philosophy on the craft.
I make techno which is a complete different spectrum but admire this man and his music so much. I would give anything to just be in the room when he's working.
For 25 yrs I thought the alchemist was a yt boy from queens, man so disappointed dude grew up rich in Beverly Hills California. Never struggled a day in his life 😮.
True but he appreciated Hip-Hop culture
But he can’t quite understand it because he’s not from the struggle
Them interludes on them classic albums use to be one of the best beats ever lol I feel him on that… Brent Fiyaz does this on his albums I know he isn’t rap lol but he uses that formula now with his projects and fans go crazy over those interlude songs.
This clip came at the right time. Got me inspired this morning. Appreciate you idea generation
Uncle Al’s progression has been Astronomical he just keeps getting better and his mic game is tight too that Theodore and Andre joint is 🔥🔥🔥need more from him and Hit pronto
Incredible discussion. Glad we got to hear it! Thanks for sharing.
thanks for watching!
The Broken Bottles with Benny is tough.
Facts
Total legend. So much more to come too. 😊
Al's unpredictability is something to be reckoned with...ESPECIALLY when the beats are slowed to like 85bpm and less. Definitely a GOAT in my book!!
thats what makes his beats so awesome. defs a heater
He got better !!! 🔥🔥🔥 2024 still dropping 💎
can't stop!
I'm sure a lot of us feel same way about interludes it's cool to hear him say that. Alchemist is one of the all time great producers.
I had a ASR 10 and could never make the drums move like Al did. Sequencing on The ASR 10 was a different animal
I feel the same. All bustas intro I would cuss him out. Spit on it ! Lol
Especially on when disaster strikes
He's a jobber, in wrestling terms . . . . . If you can't afford Producer So-and-so, Alchemist will imitate So-and-so's style for you, and do an OK job. That's his lane, and always has been. That's fine, every industry needs jobbers! But don't get uppity like you're an artist. It's like a graphic designer thinking he's Picasso. Stop it. Shout-out to all the small-hat industry handlers, lol!
After "Scientology" people need to stop just talking about the Alchemist's beats - dude's a rapper, he went hard on that track and killed it, he was even better than Havoc, I had to listen several times to make sure Havoc hadn't just gotten so much older his voice had changed and they had switched roles in the video lipsyncing each other's verses...
that's when hiphop was real music.
If the song on God's Son is "The G.O.D.", it's technically on the bonus disc 🤣Lesson is volume level and antics only get so far even for Swizz! Rough run, that's the album right after Swizz's other Nas collab "Braveheart Party" which got cut off of Stillmatic reissues haha. Swizz is a goat but didn't like his Nas joints until "Echo" which is beautiful
I love Nas, however that Swizz joint on Godson was terrible 🤣😩
I looked up that beat that Swizz Beatz sold to Nas. It wound up on a track called "The G.O.D.". Beat is straight ass imho, and Nas' isn't exactly on fire on it too
Havoc is definitely by far the greatest producer/artist that ever lived. He has bars & his production is super top tier. Till this day major artists still call upon him to produce thier joints.
Not better than Madlib
Definitely one of the best.
@@kyrie9312 Brother, I LOVE Madlib, but he's not up there. His ear for samples is amazing, but he's not a better producer.
@@issahgyandi3365 What Havoc beats are messing with Madvillainy?
I love Alchemist's music. Especially that Israeli Salad instrumental album.
Ps. First time I see The Alchemist behaving like a white man. Haha He must have finally look in the mirror :)
All the best!
Alchemist is one of the beat GODZ. Definity one of the greatest
Alchemist only has about 5 dope beats out of his 25 or 30 years making beats lmao so overrated him and OHNO ..i aint heard one dope beats from ohno mayabe one alc and ohno they a perfect match beats make me sleepy !!!! we dont do subs !!!!!!!! ..
That Swizz beat _G.O.D._ was wack. I feel embarrassed for him that he played that at max volume for Nas.
Al really has an amazing vision, taking in the next generation and keeping the rapper producer collaboration albums alive. Executing a full album with another rapper is the best concept in rap and will always be.
Incredible interview. I felt that part where he said "back then it was you eat what you kill".
And the way he expressed his gratitude to Havoc was just super amazing to hear. 2 of the best ever.
@@thecardbunker801 I definitely agree 💯
Hey man, I met you at the RTJ show in LA sorry if I seemed too much by offering you some flower but you didn’t need to call security for me being too nice. Petty
Mystic is one of my all time favourites tunes! Alchemist and Prodigy were incredible together
🔥🔥🔥 interview Al definitely is one of my favorites and top producers of all time 💯
Al I love you but please… please, stop sitting like this 💀 you look like the Israel Adesanya vs Jon Jones meme.
The Conductor beats remind me of Al's style
Damn selling beats sounds fucking wild back in the day🤣😭
someone tell ALC the swizz track didn’t make God’s Son
There was a bonus disc w/ 3 joints on it and the last was “The G.O.D.” That’s the 1 Swizz did, thought it was dope
Russian Roulette is Als best work. Prove me wrong.. 😂😂
TOO ILL, AND SEEMS VERY DOWN TO EARTH.....SALUTE.
Love the interview. Humble and gives credits where it’s due.
The beat that plays right at the end of the video... My God 🔥🔥🔥
This is how you interview someone. You let them talk.
"U ate whatchu killed at that time".....ppl don't understand how life was before the internet. Had to hustle hard to make a name back then.
"I'm da loop diggah" - Madlib
Pretty sure he went into the lab w Larry June on his newest shit. As well. Legend 🛎️
Bro laced three loops on his Old Skools like wtf how are they still on his feet lol
Interlude, that is why I loved "Me and my Eagle" by Westside Gunn from an interlude in Pete Rock & CL Smooth "Main Ingredient". The sample is so powerful, I ddn't understand why it was not used to be a proper beat.
Al’s 🥶 ! I rock with buddy from the Mobb days to now with Action, Larry and the squad!
such a great thing to me to be able to listen to ALC, such an idol to me. legendary. All time fav
DOPE AF!!! I’ felt when he said he was living in an apartment x had to keep the sound down bc of his neighbors! That shit hit different!!! 😂🤦🏽🔥
Gang Starr Daily Operation
92 Interlude
Stoupe the enemy of mankind has incredible interludes
I really wished, Nas did more of his albums with Alchemist❤ instead of Hit Boy...😂😂 Today
Just to see this dude work is phenomenal
I really appreciated this video, thank you!
From The Realest, to Hold You Down, back in the day, to the projects with Styles P, Evidence...
A great video, thank you.
the way he laced his vans is lowkey fye af
That beat Swizz came with is definitely The General that is by far the hardest beat I’ve ever heard Hip Hop wise that thing was a monster!!!!!🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
I think he's talking about The G.O.D which ended up being a god's son bonus track. The beat was mediocre and swizz clearly forced himself on the project. Thank god nas didn't keep it on the retail. Nas and swizz don't mesh well, the general is the only song I like from their collab, swizz has an history of nearly ruined nas' efforts. And as alchemist said, he's good for hyping his work but that's really to overcompensate the fact that the music is average. good music speak for itself, no need for all the theatrics when you know you're good
@@ozshukran Swizz and Nas collabs are hit or miss for sure. I loathed that Summer On Smash record from Life Is Good, it just seemed to come out of nowhere. But Echo and Runaway I think are pretty good.
What a time to be alive I shed a tear or a bunch just reminiscing. Thanks Al but phuck😂
Old interview
