Do the orcas have enough space at Loro Parque?, some visitors or interested people ask themselves - and that's a good thing! A question like this is important and we asked one who knows the facts: Chuck Tompkins.
Chuck Tompkins is a true orca expert and recognized and appreciated worldwide. He has worked with killer whales for decades and is now an independent consultant and expert - he also consults orca husbandries in zoos and aquariums.
He explains that there are 10 different forms and ecotypes within the species Orcinus orca that differ significantly in their way of life. Likewise, he talks about the reasons how and why the animals move in nature.
While killer whales in nature suffer from overfished seas, orcas in human care have the luxury of being delivered fish every day. Unlike their wild counterparts, they are no longer forced to travel several miles in order to avoid starvation.
But to make sure the animals do not get bored, their trainers also offer various activities such as participation in the Orca Show. This is an animal enrichment program that takes place in public in order to inform park visitors about killer whales and their protection.
In the video, you can see excerpts of the show, which is designed according to the concept of edutainment: a linkage between education and entertainment that should inspire people to support the protection of animals. In particular, the Loro Parque Foundation supports the orca population on the Strait of Gibraltar, which urgently needs protection.
