This is a rail car which used to run from Shimla to Kalka and vice versa. This is a world heritage track so you will enjoy this trip . I am from Shimla and I used to watch this station and toy trains daily. Great video...

Similar type of rail car were exist in Mumbai upto 1980. Those were own by Mumbai municipal corporation and it was on own land. Those railcars were called as trolley. It was having narrow gauge. It was used for maintainence of huge water trunk mains of size 1.8m Dia,2.4mdia and other water retaining structures. Those railcars were used to travel from Ghatkopar Yard to Powai,Chembur and upto Tansa dam located at 60km from city. With the development of roadnetwork use of this trollies was stop. Today the track is under enchroachmenf at many places. I had travelled upto Tansa dam before 45years with my father in my childhood. My father was working in Bmc as an Engineer. Thanks. For making me nostalgic.

I rode on that line from Ghatkopar to Tansa Lake and back, 1951; I was 6 years old. Lovely "English-style" lunch at the Chief Engineer's bungalow at Tansa.
The yard at Ghatkopar was fascinating; a miniature version of a full - sized rail yard with a variety of engines, small trains, single railcars, and wagons for carrying maintenance equipment. The fun ride was the open motorized rail-buggy. Nostalgia indeed!

Trolley or trams are different they are not same, yes they run on rails and rails were embedded in streets, u still get to seem them in Europe. They have overhead electrical wires and their track changing system is also different.

Very nice little video. I agree with Alistair Kewish definitely looks like one half of the 'Sheffield-Simplex' style of 'rail-motors', - built in the UK, although I don't know of any being operated in the UK. I believe several, virtually exactly the same operated in Ireland for the 'County Donegal Railways' - or - 'The Louth Swilly' - (sorry my memory is getting a little hazy nowadays) - and were painted Orange and Cream, although they are long gone and I think were longer and possibly towed a Goods Van when required. Does this lovely piece of 'history' still run as it looks in lovely condition, although I realise this was filmed 6 years ago and a lot can happen in that time.

    Shimla you train.
British built this entire 90km difficult rail lines about 100years back at the total cost of only Rupees one Crores. There were no corruption and bribery .
Now Bombay bullet train will cost this mnation huge USD 90bn. Salute to British.
Railways should modernise this tour with latest Toy train high speed world class engine.

@ Kamal, What logic??? Quoting prices of a 100 years ago!!
As for corruption whatever infrastructure the British built in India was for the sole purpose of mainitaining communication to facilitate extraction , movement of resources to outside India and to facilitate military movement in order to maintain control.
