Thanks for the walk round. You have all done an amazing job on ocean melody she really is a different vessel now, you have made her your own! Jack you have really won a watch here with such loving parents but also with your cabin, it's a massive upgrade from what was to be your cabin on original melody! You have the best room by far.... Schoosh! 🤫 Don't tell your parents that otherwise they will be green with envy!!

I have a suggestion re the TV! I can't bear the thought of downsizing our 7ft. TV here at home either but I will concede that you have a bit of a problem on Ocean Melody! How 'bout this for a solution? --- I'm sure you will have seen the TV's that have been set onto a frame that has been enabled to sink out of sight behind a piece of furniture such as a sofa for example? I seem to remember seeing 👀 a couple of sofas in the saloon?
Andy, Melissa, Jack and Ollie: Wishing you all a Happy and Healthy New Year. She looks quite tidy and seaworthy, love the upgrades and most, your backup electrical system. Enjoy you passage to France, I've been following the Vendee Globe. Magnificent accomplishment by Charlie Dalin, such a legend. I can visualize Jack or Ollie racing in the future. Thank you for this truly amazing tour, you all should be so proud.
Happy new year, nothing like camping in the middle of nowhere and still having the opportunity to watch this episode. It’s a bit warmer down here in Victoria, australia. It’s amazing how we can live minimally and not miss the junk. Oh, Jack is growing so fast. He seems so happy and proud of what you both have done. 🎉
Your boat looks well equipped, and quite correct too. A Naval Commander, when I asked him why the ship had four GPS Units (As well as computer navigation etc) - He replied "You've gotta have two, and if you can, have three of everything on board"...Maybe he told you the same thing. But you are doing exactly that, it seems. Safety and redundancy comes before anything, as the AA do not operate halfway between the Azores and Florida!! I wish you all, fair winds and steady seas, and may that take you to wherever you want to roam. John
I've been watching since the beginning of Steel Melody and yet I found this tour very illuminating! Thanks, Also, Melissa, while watching I noticed what nice teeth you have and then I recalled you had some orthodontia a while back. Nice job! And Andy, with the redundancy in mind, you have some fairly complex systems. But you seem to have a strong grasp of how it all fits together. And since you did a lot of the installation, it's probably in good shape for future voyages. And how Jack has grown through all this journey!
Happy new year! It's a small house but it is a beautiful boat. Lots of storage (even if not enough of course), a reasonable comfy living space and the ocean as a backyard. I love the beautiful varnished wood. It feels so "warm". There is still some work to do (there will ever be) but you've done a fantastic work restoring this boat.
Hi crew ! Thanx for the intern spaces. Quite cosy!! If you eventually are in the Med, I always on the Greek island,Karpathos,ca 4 weeks from middle april. The island is ca 70 km south from Rhodos.Karpathos looks like crooked carrot,12 villages and on town,Pigadia. Ca 6000 inhabitants, and not masses of tourists...lots of beaches,forest... I work a bit there, and go two times per year for over 20 years.... Anyway, allda bestest from mikke in sweden ;-D
No surprise: wonderful home, wonderful people. Very cleaver with the sofa pillow storage! Andy did an excellent job with the have station and the wiring. OMG: Jack's voice. I feel so old.
Even though I've watched you doing all of the work, and I've seen the progress bit by bit, It was still impressive seeing all of it in one reveal. Congratulations! I'd never heard of storing soft clothing and bedding in cushion cases, is that quite common? Seems obviously logical, but someone had to think of it first.
In regards to your TV if you look around, you can probably find a swing arm television mount that would allow you to move it freely to have access to wherever you need to and then you could fit in a bigger TV. Maybe.🎉😂
Nice walkabout m8s! Looks like it comin together. Love the hatch, be kool havin one round here. Not quite the same lookin out the winda of the car/van when I go campin but hey! Nice dunny too! Jacks doin well. Like his cabin. Well laid out. Nice carvings too! Thanks m8s, done well!
what a well spoken bunch , great tour of your ship dads nailed it on the power issues possibly be able to put some back into the power grid get some coin from them, great boat mums got it well organized and the young mans great speaker. cool we like your detail.
Hi there..i do not comment very often on your lovely channel...but, IDEA to the door in the forepeak: dismount the door and store it elsewhere for later use....let Andy build a shelfstorage in there for more clothing space. HINT to prevent dampening of your hatch: open hatch completely, strip cling film over the opening of the hatch (might to do 2 or three strips with plenty overlay), close hatch on top of it. You just created a cheap double-glazed window where the trapped air between the cling film and the hatch worx as an insulation. Hope this will contribute a tiny little to an easier life aboard. Cheers from Germany.
Hi :) thank you for commenting, really appreciated. There's literally no space behind that door, just a blank wall with nowhere to build a shelf. Love the idea with the cling film, we'll do that! Thank you :)
Now, that was a detailed tour! And she is a great home! The Boys' Room definitely is the coolest - because it is the most versatile and looks like there is not too much to be done anymore. However, the saloon is a close second: cosy, useful and nice looking. Yes, I saw a few things that you will have to store more securely when you go sailing with Ocean Melody. But I trust you are experienced enough to secure just about everything when the tie comes. I am kind of looking forward to hear how a small boy like Ollie is going to learn about the dangers of storage in a heeling boat ... but since he is growing up on a boat, that'll probably soon become second nature with him. Looking forward to seeing you explore the world in this!
Glad the dehumidifier arrived OK Hope it makes a difference Top tip Don't winter in the UK when their's plenty of exotic warmer plays to be . And cheaper too
If there's one thing I would say, is that open storage is most useless storage there is :D Be it in home, and especially on boat, it just makes things look cluttered, things get dirty/dusty and it doesn't look nice. And you can't use it as well as space that can be closed. I would consider just covering those shelves in bow cabin and cutting in doors. It should be pretty easy job. Just put some particle board, vaneer or something and attach it to that shelf and ceiling. You would get so much better looking cabin, and better storage.
Thanks for the tour Andy! I found it to be quite a revelation of your decision to upgrade from Steel Melody, fine ship though she be! Dearest Melissa, I am filled with admiration for the way you have responded to the needs of the moment by adapting so quickly to your new circumstances! 46ft. has to be the absolute minimum for your needs as a liveaboard family, and I am sure that you will both fairly quickly conclude that you will be "needing a bigger boat!" to borrow a line from a familiar TV ad we have been running here in the Land of Oz! I'm thinking 70ft +! A few years ago I was fortunate enough to have the opportunity to help my brother sail his 75ft ketch from Auckland NZ to Port Moresby in PNG. Initially, I was awed at the size of the yacht but I assure you that by the end of that voyage I was in full agreement with the size of the boat! The ship's company of 4 needed and we USED every sq inch of the available space! That is the sort of space that I feèl certain a family of 4 will need as a bare minimum for extended passages. I take the hint of the Med! I would expect that to be a promising location for boat shopping, too! I have fond memories of Cyprus where I spent some of my formative years. A great place for growing children too as the Cypriot people are very children oriented. It is a great regret that my poor health has forced me to abandon my wish for travel 😢. You have my condolences for having to endure a British winter on the boat....a worse fate is hard to imagine 😢 😞 Nevermind, Spring is on her way 😂!
Hi guys can you fix solar panels to your side rails Andy ... pivot them off the top rail but have extending brackets from the bottom corners so you can vary the position from Vertical to horizontal at anchor. Mounting this way allows you to catch early and late direct sunlight before the roof panels get adequate incident light. They also keep spray from splashing the cockpit area.
Jack has the best cabin, definitely. It's going to be a different place when a toddler gets full access. Nothing precious or fragile will be safe. It's a pity there's no space to have a cabin each for the boys. I would have subdivided the forecabin to accommodate the boys, and put the adults aft. Maybe others can happily cohabit a space with a younger sibling but it did my head in sharing with seven year younger sibling.
Jack's voice is going deeper and deeper...the kid is growing guys...in 4-5years he will ask you to drop him off in some paradise island because on another boat there is a girl making his heart beat ferociously
What a wonderful cosy nest you managed to build for your family. It's a pleasure to follow your channel. The quality of the videos has also increased a lot over time. I hope you will get the toilet of your dreams in not too long.
That spare door in your bedroom upfront, looking at the blueprint of the layout you’re showing it looks like it would’ve originally been access to a space behind your current cupboard and mirror section that somebody made a change whether that was during the manufacturer of the boat or sometime during another refit. Just a guess.
💡Mr. Andy and wife. I congratulate you on the cosmetic and practical changes you have made, yes yes they are undoubtedly magnificent. I heard your wife thinking about vegetables. Very well, since they all have a shelf life when outdoors and another when indoors, the most practical thing would be to MAKE THEM CANNED, and they do not need refrigeration. Containers like the ones shown by your wife in the video where there are legumes, wide, hard plastic and with a narrower screw-on lid, I think that with three you would be fine, as one is finished, another different CANNED is replaced, otherwise that is the reason why everyone runs out of vegetables halfway through, because they have to eat them in a hurry. You have an App called Pinterest where there are many examples of making preserves with their respective recipes and procedures, you will even always have good olive oil in maceration. Think about it. 👌
Excellent video! The boat is beautiful, Andy all of your navigation and power systems are layed out so beautifully perfect!! I look forward to the exterior tour.
I love the idea of putting your clothes or underpants, etc. into those bags, where do you get those bags Melissa I have a motorhome and space is always the issue.
You sure have done a wonderful job on Ocean Melody. Almost ready for oceanic travel. Just wondered if you were following Steel Melody's story. Fair winds.👍
The TV problem. I think nowadays there's no real need for a "TV set". This takes a lot of room and everybody can watch videos, series and even regular TV programs with her or his own individual laptop or tablet. Even in our "normal home on the ground" we don't have any TV set today. It's stored in the bassment and we don't miss it.
@@SailingMelody Ah, OK, I understand, the video games... Sorry, but as an old prehistoric human being I don't know a lot in this matter. Isn't a way to tap the "playstation/XXbox" video signal to a tablet/laptop? (airplay, screen sharing, an USB C cable, OBS, someting like that). I'm sure someone somewhere has found a solution to that. A possible other solution could be to have hinges on the screen in order to fold it to the ceiling.
Hahahah. They’re all backups on top of backups and they’re all linked so they all display the same info. I use paper charts to verify that the computer has made good decisions
Brilliant. So, couple of questions...why is there a picture of the Aig. du Midi and Mont Blanc in the forward head? Sailors & Mountaineers go together I presume. And secondly, not a trick question how does it, the boat, smell? The reason i ask is that on the boats I've sailed on, particularly on ocean crossings, there's often a slight but pervasive smell of diesel especially around the engine bay or genset. And then a bit of whiff from the head, not so much the whiff of waste but a sort of an eggy smell from seawater in the pipes. It can be a heady combination. Do you have that, and if so, how do you you deal with it?
Andy must just have the bare minimum for guitars, I have 6 electric guitars, 2 electric bass guitars, 2 acoustic guitars. 2 Peavey amps, 1 Marshall amp, 1 Orange amp and a vox amp oh and a wangs mini5 tube amp. the bass amp is a ba210 ampeg. did I say I'm on a 41' ketch... You have done wonders on O.M.
Do you need a blue water boat to go sailing for example tayana 37 or would a benetau oceana 37 be safe enough to travel around the world. I'm mainly wanting to stay in Europe but would like to travel to America atleast once
@@aarons1257 that’s a great question. The bottom line is boats of every size, shape, make and design have crossed oceans and travelled the world. The issue is the type of comfort you want. Modern productions boats like the Benetau are light, fast, easy to sail and have fantastic living spaces but they’re tender (they heel a lot) and because they’re light they get blown around more at anchor and battered more in big waves. A big old girl like ours is slower, has more cramped space inside and a smaller cockpit, which is better for wedging yourself in at sea but not so good as a place to hang out on a lovely evening. Bottom line. Modern boats are much much nicer to use, live on and sail in good conditions. If you want to be comfy doing summer sailing in nice conditions in beautiful places they are brilliant, at the expense of a more worrisome and less comfortable experience in big seas. Old heavy boats are much much nicer to use, live on and sail in bad conditions. If you want to be comfy out in bad weather and big seas and feel like you’re going to have a trouser accident a little bit less, then this is the type of boat for you.
Sorry Andy, do you want to eat well. Get a smaller TV. I would get one that was sized to fit on the expanse of white over the chart table next the companionway I have a hydrometer that I use the test the specific gravity of any fluid that i need to test. It is calibrated for antifreeze but can also be used to test bilge water. Specific gravity of seawater is between 1.02 and 1.03 and anything above 1.0 is suspect.
It looks like a Classic old timer with dark wood. You can make it moor modern if you want en remove the nav station it's 2025 the don't used any more en it takes too much of room
Hahaha not on your life. We’re not doing this to “rough it” or “push ourselves to find the limit”. We are doing this so that we have more time to enjoy everything that we enjoy. Time together, time with the kids, walking, reading, being outdoors, playing and listening to music, pursuing hobbies, watching films, creating art. Plus the TV is a phenomenal resource of educational material for the kids and a great source of entertainment when living aboard and it’s a cold rainy day outdoors. I can see the attraction of getting rid of all technology and opting for a spartan lifestyle if one was single and was focused on solitude and separation from the world etc etc, but that’s not what we are trying to achieve :)
Divided in our boat on the size of TV. P with Andy, N with Melissa. Having said that we just have an iPad for TV (and TH-cam) on the boat and it works fine. Extra solar on the side rails work very well. I think I mentioned that before, but do contact me, if you would like to see photos. Jack definitely has the best cabin!
Dear family,
Thanks for the tour and I have a lot of respect for all of you
What a lovely well spoken and polite chap Jack is, he is a credit to you both.
Thank you. We are incredibly proud!

You an Andy have worked miracles on the boat, it looks so comfortable‼️
Thank you :)
Jack’s cabin for the win! I love the desk.
Cushions as storage. Brilliant!!!

I noticed that last episode. Go Jack!
Very cool boat! Cheers and happy sailing! ⛵
it's wonderful to see Jacks voice changing into becoming a Young man
He's been a TH-cam celeb since he was a little boy but yes he's becoming a big fella now!

Ah, the issue is we do like to use the playstation as well and you can't use a tablet as a screen for a playstation or x-box
I struggle when my satnav says left...and my wife says right....how do you deal with 7 navigation 😂
Hahahah. They’re all backups on top of backups and they’re all linked so they all display the same info. I use paper charts to verify that the computer has made good decisions
Very impressive interior with a lovely layout. Thanks for sharing another great video 🥰⛵️⛵️⛵️
Sorry Melissa, if anything the television needs to be bigger 😉
Nooooo 😭
Andy and Jack need a bigger telly!
Nooooo 😭
@ Totally! 🤣
The door is for plumbing access
No plumbing behind it or space for any but maybe that was the original plan.
@@SailingMelody Could it have been part of a sail locker? quick easy access to the forward hatch?
Quite possibly.
Excellent tour Melissa, very professional. Sorry, but the male brain is programmed to "the bigger the TV screen the better", and I have to agree.
Jack and his voice have changed a lot.😅
I would get one that was sized to fit on the expanse of white over the chart table next the companionway
I have a hydrometer that I use the test the specific gravity of any fluid that i need to test. It is calibrated for antifreeze but can also be used to test bilge water. Specific gravity of seawater is between 1.02 and 1.03 and anything above 1.0 is suspect.
Smaller TV? Sorry, lost fight there lol.
😂😂
It looks like a Classic old timer with dark wood. You can make it moor modern if you want en remove the nav station it's 2025 the don't used any more en it takes too much of room
We may do that eventually but we like to keep a mix of traditional and modern and it’s also essential for us to have a desk to work at
i am concerned about your lights having inflammable material next to heat zone causing fires. beware please.
Which lights do you mean? In the saloon?
@@SailingMelody Your wedding flowers maybe? If that lamp has an LED "bulb" there won't be significant heat.
Ahh that light never gets turned on and they are normally tucked further back.
Get rid of the telly altogether.
What about a ceiling mount for TV.
That could possibly work but there is not much flat ceiling space.
