I have no idea how everything going on with AI will end up shaking out, and I hope the outcome of the various legal battles favor artists and give us the credit, compensation, and opportunity for consent that we deserve.
But in uncertain times, we shouldn't allow ourselves to abandon the things in our life that bring us joy and allow us to express ourselves. Art makes us human, and makes life worth living.

@@KelseyRodriguez but share where? I guess if you put on glaze and nightshade it doesn't matter.. but Cara (which seems to be inactive right now) and maybe Artstation are the only platforms that are trustworthy, but even Artstation added an AI filter, so not sure about that one!
I’m a writer, not a visual artist, but it’s really fun and rewarding to have your art understood and appreciated.
My friend felt like he had a better grasp of who I was as a person after reading my novel, and that was super cool exchange I’ll remember til I die.
Just make sure the audience is right. If I sent my novel to someone who dislikes fantasy and anime I doubt I’d get the same positive response lol.

Thank you. As a writer, I really needed this amongst people telling us we can't make a living anymore. They're dead wrong. AI art isn't art, and never will be.
I've given up art as a living but thanks for reminding me that it's always here for me, and will always be a part of me.

I make art, because it’s part of who I am. I need it like I need air or water. And my grandfather, who I was very close to, was an artist. He got me into art. He passed away six years ago, and I like to think that he’s with me while I make art.
Tysm for this video❤, I was unable to pick up a pencil for days because I had the whole " what's the point" mentality because of AI art, this made me feel much better
there is often times where i've doubted my art which I know that its relevant to everyone else but whenever I feel like I'm in a mental art block or having no motivation to create n' stuff, I either listen to music, find things that makes me happy and also after making a new finished piece, I go and get my old sketchbooks and turn pages to memory lane and keep reminding myself that I have come this far and why would I give it up all now. and that's very amazing for me to keep going, In art (specifically digital art) I felt like I found my purpose to create and tell silly stories over the cartoon characters I love and cherish. The beauty of creating is already my theraphy, I just need to think less about the outcome when sketching a new artwork idea. Also this is long but amazing commentary btw.
This was an enjoyable listen, There is something very cathartic to doing art and losing yourself in it, I did a study on a leg in charcoal and my wife asked if i was coming to eat, and i said a already had lunch.. and she yelled back.. Dinner!!!
ai art is just automated plagiarism, and plagiarism has been around forever. dont let it stop you from enjoying art.
I loved this! I'm in the camp of the longer the video, the better!! ❤ ive only been doing art since 2021, started when i was 30. But I had to take a year off due to eye pain/strain , and during that year i was shocked by how much i missed doing art, how much i craved it!
I loved how you talked about making art is like a compulsion. I feel like whenever I have expressed to my family of feeling very frustrated during a time when I was not able to make art, I feel like they didn't always get it. I felt like I sounded insane, and that I wasn't doing the feeling justice. It felt like a crazy thing to even be complaining/venting about!
Like you said, it feels like my mind has been filled up, and the only way I could operate like a normal person would be to first get some of the things out through making art and other types of crafts. Once I have an idea to make something that makes me feel very inspired, I get stir-crazy, thinking about it all day until I then stay up all night and I make the thing I wanted to make. Even if the end result doesn't always live up to my grand expectations haha.
It is so hard for my mind to imagine not making art and things. Like, I think if I challenged myself to not make a single thing for one entire day, i would just be be stuck staring at the wall wherever I am, or rotting in bed binge-watching/reading to take up the time. I doubt I would have the energy to interact with anyone lol.
I went through a really rough patch a while ago, where I hadn't been able to make art or put paintbrush to easel for a long time. Didn't even keep a sketchbook. And those were some of the saddest parts of my life so far. Really set in stone how much art is a part of who I am. Now I really try to actively use art as a tool for mental health, with the mindset of some art I make is meant to be permanently private and only for me.
I rambled a lot, but in all thanks so much for your video, I really appreciated hearing someone else put an artist's mindset and feelings and compulsions into words. Very validating!

When I'm in a rutt I just *do something ridiculous* - right now I'm making a music video in an editing software (even though I own animation software), in 2021 I made a Nicholas Cage podcast where I did art for all the movies.

Thank you for sharing this; I am a hobbyist artist studying psychology in grad school; even though I struggled to make a business out of my art, I eventually accepted that I still loved to make it; I finished one comic and I am working on a second one ☺️

Thank you for sharing this! As a traditional Artist you feel some kind of way when seeing this whole AI thing.. Art is my passion and something that brings me joy ❤. Technology is a good thing but it’s moving way too fast in everything… and can be a bit overwhelming.
Thanks for another introspective conversation Kelsey ❤ I have to share my own experience for anyone who may identify with it 😅 study the fundamentals start to finish, I used to tell myself that I have to get really good at shapes or anatomy before moving on to light and colour, and I definitely fell into the trap of the permanent student until I just got the courage to get through those fundamentals and finally move on to painting to completion, I can finally say that I am in a period of learning how to have fun with art again 😊 never being able to finish anything because I was missing that last leg of information set me back and broke my heart here and there, but in the end it worked out. For screen advice I also agree, reduction is the best medicine and curating can be a great cherry on top, obviously I try not to ignore the biggest news of our world but I want my scroll feed to be full of art and to inspire me 😅 well keep creating and it will turn out fine ❤
When we start letting AI control our thoughts and how we go about (our) art then it has won.
As long as we stand up for what we are doing there will be people love what we are creating.
In earlier times it started with prints, which artists may found intimidating, still there alwas were and always will be people which look especially for originals.
So there will always be people appreciate real art. We do not create for "hipster-trend-narrow-minded" persons. We create for those, who want to dive into an other world, even if only for a second, when looking at a postcard with our design or their destop wallpaper - and most importantly!!! We do it for us!!!
Yes, art ist our job but it is our passion, life, lifeforce, joy, way to express ourselves and so much more. Words could never be enough to put what every one of us feels when doing art.

Adaptability. Branding. Developing other parts of yourself other than the reclusive, escapist side of you that doesn’t like to deal with people so you draw/paint. Seeing Life as art, not just art as art - are all important. *This is coming from a loving place. Speaking as a 30 something who was once as introverted and obsessed with art as anyone ever. Trust me guys, there is way more inside of you than just being an artist or painter. Be a leader. An art-healer. A game/experience designer. Tie your art in with your intellectual persuits. These are the traits of working ‘artists’ in the future.

Of course I'm retired so there is not the same pressure as someone younger trying to make art their career, yet I still have the need for supplemental income. I don't like AI and I pray that someone can do something to stop that monster or hold it responsible for compensation at the very least. I don't even know if that made sense. What you shared at 11:45 is so powerful. I’m so happy you share content like this. That’s all I wanted to say.
A lot of people approach art and creative craft as a means to an end and that end being making money to live, and when you purely approach it from that surface level i can empathise with those abandoning it. I feel like theres a fine balance between the pragmatism and the romantisism of being a craftsman and a professional creative. Being an artist and a creative is already such a difficult pursuit, and the proliferation of gen AI and the culture around it really evokes a lot a hopeless feelings deep in my core.
As a hobby, thats a whole other game, in that way as long as you enjoy it and the process of learning and playing and practising, ai wont really get in the way of that.

Hi Kelsey, thanks for making this video. One of the reasons why some artists are despondent about the AI situation is because it is a threat to our careers & income. I have been a commercial artist for over 30 years. Meanwhile, some 'hobby' artists may feel less threatened by AI, because art will always be a pleasurable hobby. I will always enjoy art for my own pleasure too, and AI won't impact that, but what about my profession? I'm concerned about youngsters being put off pursuing careers in art because the discipline may increasingly be seen as "easy" with just a few clicks and prompts to make creative output. Going forward, who will be willing to take out loans to pay for an art education? The profession may lose respect, and most people want to be respected. I'm keen to hear your thoughts on this aspect in particular.

Maybe start by not calling your art a brand or content. It feeds into that AI mentality all too well.

Hi Kelsey, I really appreciate your approach towards teaching art business. I was wondering where did you learn all this information? Are there any specific business or marketing books that you recommend?
@KelseyRodriguez why do you hold your brushes so high? Is it not hard to control? Whats the reason? Is it just for filming?
it helps me have better posture while painting and encourages me to be farther away from the surface so I look at the entire painting when making marks! There is some amount of reduced control but agonizing less over every individual brushstroke is a good thing, hope that helps
You are so right ! I make art as soothing therapy. I never even try to sell it. If anything, I give it away.
i got to the ai is scary part, i think is okay to be frustrated / mad about ai stuff as is unethical and also be mad about those who use it and try to put it on a pedistool, but its not great to let ai or anything else stop you from doing what you love, ai won't be around forever and even if it is that just means your creativeness is more exclusive and more needed as a result! yes is a pain but dont let the pain stop you let it fuel you.

Hey there, Kelsey. Did you complete this painting study? I’d love to see the finished piece. Speaking of master studies, have you copied any works from master female artists? Oh! If you want to learn how to paint/draw grass or any other nature, you could start a nature journal where you go outside and draw and write about what you see, hear, touch, experience around you. I’ve been making videos about exploring nature and working in my nature journal, and I’ve personally learned a lot. Maybe it could help you in your art too.
I make art that makes me smile, workout ideas. I guess art is more of an expression of my loves, dreams, desires, etc. I'm not very good at it but I love the process. The solace I get from creating is the thing that keeps me pressing forward and creating.

17:48 … I know you’re in this historical kick, though… Have you thought of looking at what Watercolor Landscapes could offer for rendering grass & other fauna? Even if your media is Oil Paint, it doesn’t mean you can glean some cross-media techniques…? Especially when Watercolor needs to be rendered simply, if at least quickly due to the nature of the medium.
My enthusiasm to make art for fun decreased sharply once AI came into the picture since people can generate whatever they want to see on their phone in seconds.
The art i liked to produce can be seen as generic digital anime art because that's generally what it was.
People are just mass producing this style of art now with ai. Its just not exciting or special to see anymore. I feel redundant.
The thing i liked to do is now flooding the internet. Anyone can do it at any time. The AI will make whatever you want to see with just a few promps. I hate to admit that AI is very creative. People who say AI isn't creative are coping.

While I understand that AI stealing others work is wrong I often think people's reactions are often due to comparison. It's very similar to when you compare oneself to other artists and give up because you can never compete. As in that scenario your art matters on its own, don't let comparison ruin that, whether it be another artist or AI.

I'm a successful realistic artist and I work from AI instead of photos now. I get exactly the composition I want and sell easily. I have never complained about AI. Making actual paintings from AI is a Godsend for ideas, and compositions. I use my own computer and fooocus so I own all of my AI images.
AI art all looks the same, it will never take over from true creativity. In many ways AI actually makes real art look even better, because real art looks original and unique, AI does not.
