I have a separate businesses and art, when I'm not painting I make and sell jewelry I make that's professional. I'll just sell my art merchandise using my original art that's not digital like handbags 👜 Si no one is seifuxh only buyers are selfish and viewers that just like your students ff or scroll away that's not nice and jealous . I'm born with a disabilty that's microcephaly 29/30 years and stuggle. I even struggle Academicaly and people don't like us disabled people they ignore. "You will never feel ready." This is something I wish I knew sooner.
I always felt like I needed to improve my art to a certain point before I could show or sell it. This stunted my growth more than anything else! You truly will never be ready, and that growth will come as you learn along the way!

Please continue making selfish art people. Dont ever stop. But also make art for people. You can follow trends and make things for people like a factory but remember to make sure you also do your own selfish art FOR people from time to time. You have no idea how much people recognize your style and your own work. Your visions and ideas can sell greatly. Dont let your store be a copy paste of what's popular. You will loose all your passion and burn out like a candle. But also research and knowing what the market wants is also important. It is a balance. Don't fall for extremes. But please for the love of all that is artsy, make, selfish art! Also stop calling is selfish, it is art for you and your enjoyment that others might love. You can post this on a separate account and see how people enjoy it. So while making something that will make you happy you can also share it with the world and get feedback

Pursuing a theoretical audience instead of your own unique vision is, imo, why so many movies are terrible these days. Generic. Derivative. Forgettable.

I don’t actually know if this distinction is helpful or true 🤔 It has a ring of hierarchy to it. „Fine“ art being somehow superior. If we look at art history MOST of what we consider art through all ages was commission work and it’s main purpose for the artist’s was to pay the bills 😅

Real talk though, the expectation that your face is your brand these days is genuinely upsetting to me. I value my privacy. I do not enjoy being on camera. People attache things like a brand identity to something they see in every video/post and that is usually the person’s face. If you don’t want to share your face then you need to have a really strong art style/ business product and brand story associated, that people are going to recognise instantly in the first 3 seconds of the video. Hope that helps ❤

Ive seen a creator who uses a fabric draped in front of her face and her videos are mostly around clothing. She models the clothing and shows herself in a way, just without showing her face. The piece of fabric protecting her image is consistent in the videos so it's memorable to see the fabric and know its already her. Just a thought. Some people make videos with the priority of not showing their entire self the same way streamers that don't wanna be seen become recognizable for their voice instead and the way they play the game and so on. You can meet your desire to engage in privacy and separation of your face and you + your business.

Hi there! Totally understand, I wish I would’ve added this in the video too but you don’t HAVE to show your face if you don’t want to, even just doing voiceovers is a powerful tool to get people engaged in your story/art ❤️ Like others have said; without something that makes your art unique (which our faces and voices are inherently unique) you will need to work a little harder to get your art out there.

I don’t think any art is selfish, it builds authenticity and skill to experiment. But your business approach to add value is correct. You can do art for yourself and add value, I think Louise Fletcher is a good example of that where her whole ethos is teaching people to find joy in their art.

I think your point about not making selfish art is great but I think it’s also really important to point out that “requested” art absolutely does not always sell either. Especially when people request an artist or small business to create a certain style of jewelry or painting or even a clay piece like you and then they choose not to buy it because they suddenly can’t afford it, just wanted to see it and didn’t even have intent on buying it, or flat out don’t want it anymore. I had this happen once and never allowed it to happen again and I’ve seen it happen to a lot of other small businesses as well. As you said it is important to make things people actually want to buy but it’s also important to acknowledge this type of behavior from people that demand and request things and don’t buy it and waste the time, money, and materials of small businesses and artists. As lot of us do depend on our sales to cover business expenses, rent, medical bills, pet food, etc, I think more people need to acknowledge this side of the business too. If anyone reading this makes requested art or does customs, please take payment upfront or at least partial payment and protect yourself from losing your hard earned money on materials and wasting your precious time!

Haha the first point is the reason I'm even starting a side hustle- I'm a graphic designer working in a corporate setting where im basically just a button pusher who gets no say in the work I'm making. I want to just make art that I want to make, and might as well try selling it if I've got all that art racked up!
I have been giving myself small prompts so that the art im making will have some sort of appeal to customers, and doing test batches so I can discontinue designs that didn't sell!
So playing with the fine line of profitable freedom and fully selfish art has been interesting:)

  • @shonthelawn
    @shonthelawn 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +62

This is one way to do it but it’s definitely not the only way or the best way for everyone. You should do what works for you. Other people will say create authentic art and people will relate / recognize the authenticity. Check out Rick Rubin’s advice that “the audience comes last.” The merging of art and business is definitely complex so I hope people watching realize that there are multiple paths to success and they all look very different.

    • @caffeinatedhobgoblin
      @caffeinatedhobgoblin 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +8

Exactly! It's really all a trial and error and take advice like this loosely. Try it for yourself, but if it's not working, try another way. While not making selfish art is great and definitely a part of the business, I think it also depends on what you are selling as well when it encompasses marketing. Like, I'm currently in the process of creating a tarot deck and that is sort of in the realm of half and half, if that makes sense. It's a selfish product, but it's also targeting a spiritual audience who might also connect with the cards and their messages. I think making selfless art/requested work has its place, especially to build a business and get people talking about it, but it's not the main thing nor something that needs to be done if it doesn't fit the business and/or audience you are trying to reach.

regardless of the videos (making a mini cafe and book shopping) performance, I still find them relaxing like a short break from the clay business. "Cannot stay the same" really struck me because I started making items with resin and while I enjoy it, it's not something that I can stick with forever because of the ups and downs when working with resin. So I came across one of your videos on TikTok and I thought to myself, "clay? make tiny art? Worth a shot" and while it took some trial and error, I find it relaxing. I didn't have to wear gloves, worry about toxic fumes, or the environment throughout the year. Like drawing, it was something I could do anytime

This is so true! I am a professional graphic designer and this is my fulltime job. I always say: Don't produce "art babies" (in my graphic design job). What I mean is: Don't let critique be something that destroys you in this field because the thing you created is too close to your heart.
Yes, make AWESOME WORK - but learn that it's ok if the client don't like it, no matter how much effort you put into it.

You have to distinguish between design and art. Design is about making something that will sell because it is beautiful and usable. Art is something that connects with a contemporary feeling, ”zeitgeist” and you need intuition to feel that and it is a talent few have. Most artists are poor but being a designer is the easiest way to get rich if you are good at what you are doing. As an illustration of good design is the lemon press that looks like a spider designed by the French designer Phillippe Stark.

This was so helpful Tammy!! (For the record, I don’t think you could sound mean if you wanted to). I literally just had my first booth at a market this weekend and one of the most popular products I sold were ones I just made last minute and didn’t really think too much about bc I liked my other stuff more. When you said you need to make selfless art, that really resonated with me. At the end of the day, business is for your audience so thinking/making products for others that still represents who you are is so important. It’s not always about what we like/what we are super proud of or spent a lot of time making. Thank you for all the truths🫶🏼

I struggle with the concept of following my heart as for many years I worked in health care and it nearly destroyed me in the end ( my soul). I believe a balance can be found in finding what I love to paint and what others will love, I just haven’t figured it out yet my favorite thing is drawing the prettiest faces I can and adding elements of nature. I wish I’d had this video when I was getting out of high school and trying to figure out to do, because if I’d known what I know now about what it means to be a “working artist” - especially in the age of social media - I would never have done it.

ty for sharing Tammy! I’ve been back and forth on doing commissions (leaning towards not doing them) but thinking about the customer having an emotional connection with it gives me a new perspective. I can still do my own art that makes me happy and balance it with commissions. tysm!

Thank you for your guidance Tammy! I decided to get serious about starting my small business and I needed to hear these truths. I don't think I fully understood what it would take to get into this world of creating and selling my work. One of my biggest fears is experiencing the disappointments and I want to change my mindset and use this opportunity to learn to be okay with disappointment and grow from it! You have been a huge inspiration for me ❤!

Just wanted to share my own thoughts that kinda proves your point!
I didn't see the videos you made for yourself, but I'm already interested, despite it doesn't have any value for me personally. I'm following your art journey and just adore polymer figurines by you! And this joy is what connected me with your identity. And now, I'm interested in those videos just because I'm feeling emotionally connected :D
So yeah, value is really important to make people interested, but the emotional connection is what makes them care!
Thank you for this great video, btw!💕✨

This 100% I was getting really lost and realized at the end of the day just being me is the best way forward. I use B roll of my art but add text or voice overs that has nothing to do with that but more with being a pet parent or an artist. I have realized just finding others like me is what I have found at markets and is the same online, just a different medium.

I really needed the comment about separating your art from what you monetize! Also, using references from Pinterest has always felt like “cheating”, but I have such a hard time coming up with my own art topics/ideas/poses. So maybe it is good to use Pinterest references and then practice enough to be able to visualize my own concepts. Thank you!!

I know your video is only 10 minutes and 45 seconds, but as soon as I heard your first advice, I genuinely took 30 to 45 minutes to write down everything, along with my thoughts and what I wanted myself to do for me and my future audience, because since covid started, I really wanted to put out my art to be discovered, have my own small following, and start to plan and create 2 visual novels with and without a team (one is more like a fanfiction brought to life since it's based on an existing anime while thw other has my entire life in it and how I viewed certain things into an original story that I originally wanted it to be a manga). BUT unfortunately I had a bit of stuff that I had to also take care of and solve (mainly family, uni life, starting to live onmy own in the uni halls while also being careful with my health condition, work, studies and more), and because of it my now ex best friend called me a selfish person that acts as a victim and never takes responsibility just because I wasn't even able to text "Hi how are you" to her. She had some mild depression going on, and I did try my best to help even though we were now living in two different countries (we're both from Italy but I moved to the UK due to my mother's unemployed status in Italy back in October 2015), but it wasn't enough. For her I was faking everything, all of my problems where just lies, and she even thought that I was exaggerating my actual status with my health condition (not sure if she understood that in Italy I was well taken care while in the UK they got me worse in less than a year, and the weather is more colder, which is a guge trigger for me). Because of her, I ended up getting major depression myself and ending up miserable and making my mother suffer until the end of 2023. Now I'm finally recovering, and I want to get myself back together by finally pursuing my dream to be a Vtuber. I want to both educate (70%) and entertain (30%) people who like anime, manga, gaming, drawing, and who like me also want to start something on their own comfortably without triggering any of their own physical or mental health conditions in the long run (in my case is Sickle Cell anemia, I get massive pain all over the body which makes me unable to do anything on my own most of the times and also gets me in the hospital often).
So yeah, I really broke down every single word you said and elaborated my own plan and set of rules for myself to follow from tomorrow. I just want to start and see how it works out, even if my vtuber debut will obviously happen a but later since I'm making my own model as well from scratch.
    Ps.
Btw, in 2023 I discovered that my now ex best friend was faking about having depression just because she wanted to gain more attention to herself from me, her parents, some of her friends, and gain pity to have more friends AND a boyfriend (which happens to be the one, old super smart classmate of mine back in middle school). He also had major despression at one point, but he overcame it on its own pretty quickly and didn't damage himself physically, but I'm afraid he's going to be manipulated by her, because it's what she did with me and I didn't notice until I was already deep down into my own depression (she's jealous if her friends speak with other of their own friends. She did that with me, and when we broke the friendship I realised that all the friends I had gained were all now out of reach, especially the ones that helped me more than she did).
Sorry for venting this dark side of my life along with my lifelong postponed dream though... the fact that I categorise this 11-12 year long ended friendship as something dark compared to the painful days, weeks, months I've experienced in hospital still kinda amazes me...

well, great advice! also, people tend to "buy" from artists that fall into the main categories of art. ex: impressionist, surrealist, modern blah blah. a good thing to know if you want to sell your paintings i guess. this was told to me by an art critic and auctioneer, who sells million dollar and up paintings daily. so a lot of artists who are struggling to make ends meet are on the "edges" usually of 1 or more of these categories and people can't "place" them. that is one of the main flaws of artists today. being a rebel usually makes you poor in the end, it's like being a "nice guy" in love or business... it just isn't a working strategy.

I've been trying with a freelance illustration career for years off and on - and I think a big issue *has* been not knowing who my audience is - and since I haven't built up an audience on social media it's hard for me to ask questions of what they'd like to see or make more of. I've started a youtube channel but the same problem persists. I agree we need to make work/art *for* someone, but in the beginning when we don't know who we're marketing toward isn't it *for* ourselves? And then we pivot when no one likes it? ㅠㅠ

These were great applicable insights. Definetly not harsh at all! Especially that last one, I am now giving myself that switch of mentality. The switch of business vs art for the soul. Also the reason I am starting a new IG because the current one feels too personal to just switch things up to "business", so thank you again Tammy/Uncomfy.
