  • A movie of yokai paintings and music by Shinji Yamashina.
    Using traditional Japanese instruments such as the taiko drum, shinobue flute, and shakuhachi (bamboo flute), as well as piano and flute, Yamashina creates a unique world of yokai using his own drawings of yokai set to traditional and contemporary music.
    Recommended for those interested in Japanese yokai, ghosts, ethnicity, and culture.
    Please enjoy the world of yokai, which is depicted beautifully, suspiciously, sometimes humorously, and sometimes terrifyingly.

    NOTE===
    Shall I wash the red beans? Or should I grab someone human and eat them? "Shokishoki!(Washing azuki beans sound)”
    It was late at night, so I could hear the sound of azuki washing and singing coming from the stream, which should be empty.Shall I wash the red beans? Or should I grab someone human and eat them? "Shokishoki!(Washing azuki beans sound)”
    The yokai "Azuki -Arai" is a sound monster that has been handed down from generation to generation throughout Japan. It has many different names, such as "Azuki -Togi," "Azuki -Gosha Gosha," and "Azuki Sogi" . All you can hear is the sound of him washing azuki beans and his singing voice. There is no legend that he really caught people and ate them, as the song's lyrics say.
    Contrary to the legend that no one has ever seen him, the painter Shunsen Takehara painted him. Japanese people have an image of "Azuki -Arai" as bald-headed, big-eyed, and dressed in Shugendo costumes. However, no one knows why Shunsen Takehara was able to paint this image.
    Azuki beans have been eaten in Japan since ancient times. They are used to make red bean paste (Anko), a Japanese confectionery, and red rice, which is eaten on festive occasions. In addition, azuki beans have been valued as food to ward off evil. It's a strange story, but a demon "azuki-washing" washes the sacred food. It's like Dracula eating ario aurio peperoncino, isn't it?
    Ever since I was a child, "Azuki -Arai" has been one of my favorite yokai because of his charming appearance and the lyrics of the songs he sings. "Azuki -Arai" looks frightening, but somehow it is hard to hate. If you listen carefully, you can hear the sound of him washing azuki beans in the distance.
